Rumsfeld quitting as defense secretary
POSTED: 1:39 p.m. EST, November 8, 2006

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush announced Wednesday that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is stepping down from his post.

"The timing is right for new leadership at the Pentagon," Bush said at the White House Wednesday afternoon.

Rumsfeld has been heavily criticized for his policies in Iraq, and exit polls taken during Tuesday's midterm election showed strong voter dissatisfaction -- 57 percent -- with the Iraq war.

"I recognize that many Americans voted last night to register their displeasure with the lack of progress being made" in Iraq, Bush said. (Bush discusses Rumsfeld's resignation -- 1:27)

Bush said he has "a series of thoughtful conversations" with Rumsfeld about the defense secretary's resignation.

Former CIA chief Robert Gates, who headed that agency from 1991 until 1993, will be nominated to take over as defense secretary, Bush said Wednesday.

Gates is now president of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

Rumsfeld, 74, has served as defense secretary since January 20, 2001, the beginning of Bush's first term.

He also served as defense secretary under President Ford from 1975 to 1977.

"Don Rumsfeld has been a superb leader during a time of change," Bush said Wednesday. "Yet he also appreciates the value of bringing in a fresh perspective during a critical period in this war."

With the change, Bush pledged to stand by the people of Iraq.

"Do not be fearful," Bush said in reference to Iraqis. "As you take the difficult steps toward democracy and peace, America's going to stand with you. We know you want a better way of life, and now is the time to seize it."

Bush also expressed support for U.S. military personnel.

"Don't be doubtful. America will always support you," the president said. "Our nation is blessed to have men and women who volunteer to serve and are willing to risk their own lives for the safety of our fellow citizens."

Rumsfeld has been under increasing pressure as U.S. casualties mount in Iraq.

October was the fourth-deadliest month for U.S. troops since the 2003 invasion, with 105 Americans killed.

Earlier this year, eight retired generals, including former NATO commander Wesley Clark and the former head of U.S. Central Command Anthony Zinni, called on Rumsfeld to resign.

Just out of curiousity, while Bush is saying he has been planning this for awhile...do you really believe it would've happened if Democrats lost?

Yeah,

"Don't worry Iraqis, as you take the difficult steps toward democracy and peace, America's going to stand with you. Soon you'll too have:

No universal healthcare

Partisianship instead of sectarianism

Easy access to drugs, alcohol, and porn. (And legal too, well except the drugs, but there are ways around that so don't worry.)

Freedom of Religion and speech (but of course no talking about politics while in service)

Freedom to dress like as scantly as you want (Hey it gets hot in Iraq)

And to get your mind off any personal problems you may experience we bring you the world of entertainment! Hours of personalized programming like Sports, American Idol (or Iraqi Idol in your case) and equipment like TVs, computers, and video games that will pacifiy any urge of dissidence.

Oh, and your have Fast Food! No trans fats of course, us Americans are trying to become more health.

what's wrong with legal porn and alcohol??

Q: What's the last thing that goes through the mind of a cow?

A: [BLACKOUT]A steel bolt[/BLACKOUT]

Wow, this just came practically out of nowhere. That's a good thing. Rumsfeld was definetely the most blameworth of the Bush Administration, was arrogant and pig-headed, and I personally think is the one mostly responsible for f**king up the situation in Iraq.

The biggest shame however is that Rumsfeld had some great ideas for the military, he just implimented them poorly and too soon.

True, Cheney is still there. To me, Bush is a puppet. Cheney is definitely the brains of that group.

If Bush's warmongering ended on Afgahnistan, and Rummy could've kept it under control, he would've gone down as the most brilliant secretary of defense in US history.

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. If anything it's the other way around.
You need to watch or read some documentaries on Rumsfeld. :csad:

I'm not implying that Bush is the brains that people like Rumsfeld anwsers to, nor that Rumsfeld didn't make his contributions.

Its not any one person that is directing the Bush Adminstration but a committee.

Just out of curiousity, I'm wondering why Bush hasn't been given at least *some* credit for Rumsfeld's departure, since he could have just ignored the will of the people and kept him in office.

You're such a moderate. :whatever:

Maybe because Bush has ignored the will of the people, the will of the generals, and the will of pretty much everyone for the past 3 years.

I don't think so, though. I mean, he considered his re-election a "mandate" from the American people, remember? There was no mechanism (i.e. some vote from the masses) to let him know what the American people were wanting, other than polling, which everyone claims isn't accurate anyway.

And this is a legit question. Why do you think it's not a moderate question, because it asks an objective question from the "other point of view"?

good day in the news... dems take house and possibly senate, and rumsfeld resigns... I will sleep a little easier tonight

even though technically I won't be sleeping cause the spider-man trailer premieres tomorrow and I'll be cracked out waiting for that

haha. If Rumsfeld had done this a week ago the republicans would still have control of the senate.

dumbasses.

Bush fires people hoping they'll take a little blame with them.

I can only guess that this was done with 2008 in mind. If a democrat wins the White House then Democrats will have total control of the U.S. :wow:

And who knows better than the Bush Adminstration of what can happen when one party controls the country.

And if Rumsfeld had done this a week ago, wouldn't you be sitting here claiming it was "just in time" for the election and blaming Bush for being underhanded?
