Bethesda Doom Eternal

Doom 2016 took the franchise back on top after Doom 3 (Not terrible but the weakest). Eternal will just be the cherry on top!

If I'm going to get a game on day 1 then might as well just pre order days before release. Especially since I go digitally
After reading reviews and liking what I hear/see, I then buy a day or two before release. For PS4 exclusives, I never had Amazon not deliver on release day. If I show up at my local game store, they always have copies available. For digital PC, I pre-install whenever it is available and simply click Play on release day.

You get the rerelease of Doom 64 if you pre-order as well. That game is criminally underrated
Eh, I'm good with Doom64 EX. Heck, I won't be surprised if id actually uses it for their version... :sus After all, they bundle DOSBox with Doom/Doom2/Quake.

Doom 3 was just a poor man's System Shock.

Playing the last one was a bizarre experience for me. I was never really a Doom guy, but I gave the last one a chance after the Wolfenstein reboot won me over. The last one was so, so good. One of the best shooters I have ever played.
Yes. Doom has now overtaken some once great franchises that are on the decline. It shows that franchises don’t have some self imposed ceiling. You can break out way down the line to new levels or to reclaim past glories.

I'm about 100% certain that's exactly what they're doing but like Nightdives Turok rereleases, it'll likely have more goodies but either way, it's essentially free. The current Doom rerelease ala switch use a source port now instead of just vanilla dos box so they don't look stretched out into oblivion. I'm not sure if this is the version currently offered on steam or not. I've been ripping the WADs from the BFG edition and running them in gzdoom for ages now. Speaking of Quake, it really grinds my gears that the version on steam still has to be modded to play with the original music. That games in dire need of official support.

How many Doom games have there been altogether now? Same question for Wolfenstein.

Thanks for that. I don't know much about Doom 64 or Doom VR. Are they good?

The list is missing Final Doom which is its own game. Doom VFR is just recycled content from 2016 with ****tier controls.

Castle Wolfenstein
Beyond Castle Wolfenstein
Wolfenstein 3D
Spear of Destiny
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
Wolfenstein 2009
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus
Wolfenstein: Youngblood
Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot

And there's a mobile RPG spin-off.

Thanks!!

A lot more Wolfenstein games than I expected.

Doom VFR is okay if you play it with smooth locomotion and a Dualshock 3. Using the standard controls sucks but if you set it up right it feels pretty much like a 3-4 hour expansion for Doom 2016. I wouldn't recommend buying a VR setup just top play Doom VFR, but if you've already got the hardware it's worth the cost of the game.

My Doom series rankings:
1. Doom 64
2. The Ultimate Doom + Sigil
3. Doom II: Hell On Earth + The Master Levels + No Rest for the Living
4. Doom (2016)
5. Final Doom
6. Doom VFR
7. Doom 3 + Resurrection of Evil + The Lost Mission from BFG Edition

Doom 64 is the real Doom 3. A near perfection of the formula set forth in Doom, Doom II, and Final Doom. It's missing a few enemies, and that's the only thing that holds it back in my opinion. It was looked at as dated upon release, but in hindsight I think it holds up quite a bit better than other FPS games from 1996-1997.

The Ultimate Doom is a classic. The pacing and balance of the game is fantastic.

Doom II still holds up great as well, but some of the levels are overly long and convoluted. The map design is not as tight as in Ultimate Doom. But it does make up for it with the multiplayer, the Super Shotgun, and all the new enemies.

Doom 2016 is probably my favorite modern shooter and I can't wait for Eternal.

Final Doom is hard as nails, but it's still pretty fun.

VFR is okay.

Doom 3 is total ass and I will never be convinced otherwise.

I like Doom 3 just not as a Doom game. It's like Carmack hit his head at some point and thought he was making a sequel to System Shock.

Even without the Doom legacy it doesn't hold up to contemporary games in the genre like Unreal Tournament 2004, Counter Strike: Source, Half Life 2, or Halo 2 which all released the same year.

Doom 3 is mostly walking down dark hallways from one jump scare to the next. The gunplay isn't satisfying either. It's not good as an action game, it's not good as a horror game.

It's a glorified tech demo for new rendering techniques and sound design features of the era. That's the best that can be said for it.

Eh considering the lacking of quality in horror games of that era, I'd saying you're being a bit hard on it on that front but yes as an action game it is lacking compared to it's peers. As an off brand dumbed down version of System Shock, I think it works in that limited context.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein was some of my favourite gaming moments back in the early 2000s. The multiplayer mode was fantastic.

Supplies are too abundant for it to really work as a horror game. You're never really that threatened because you always have enough health and ammo. The only tension the game creates is through artificial means (ie, making you trade off between being able to see with the flashlight or defend yourself).

The encounters are mostly just unloading way too many bullets into braindead enemies.

You just described the majority of the Resident Evil and Silent Hill franchise and modern "horror" games like Amnesia. There's an active amount having to make your own rules for these games to be even close to tense because they're laughably unbalanced and far more concerned with you being able to get through the game than actual survival horror. What you're describing are problems of the genre as a whole that are not just exclusive to Doom 3.

Doom 3 is alright and kinda underrated but definently the weakest Doom I've played, which is most of them except Final Doom, Ultimate Doom, VR and mobile.

Doom, Doom II, Doom 64 and Doom 2016 are not just my favorites in the franchise but among my favorite video games of all time

So I just noticed this game has 3rd person cutscenes. I absolutely love that.

Final Doom is easily the weakest mainline entry followed by Doom VFR. Doom 3 is the best of the worst as far as the weak links go and underrated when you consider that at the time single player shooters akin to System Shock were largely dead at that point in favor of consolized multiplayer experiences. The shooting in Doom 3 definitely sucks which is a problem for game bearing the Doom name. Had it been repackaged as something else it would have likely been better received.

I do like that Doom 64 is getting the love it deserves these days. They probably should have kept the original title Doom: The Absolution. I think most folks at the time thought it was just another port given the generic name.

Expected this but it's always nice to get confirmation. Another reason why Doom is my favorite shooter as well

That is encouraging to see.

Games like Doom are the standing pillars in an otherwise destroyed civilization
