In the UK you only have dorms at University. And they are more flats (apartments) than dorms.

I always kept my door shut, generally locked. There are usually a couple of crazies on every dorm floor, and you never know when they'll strike!

I barely closed my door in the dorms, got along well with everyone on my floor especially freshman year, it was the best way to get to know people, why be antisocial, you're going to be at school hopefully for at least four years and the best way to make friends is too take away the barrier of a door, only lived in the dorms for a year and a half, then moved into my fraternity house, and then kept my door closed even less since I had absolutely no trust issues.
