Iron Man 3 Downey's last?

Downey and Stark pretty much seem like the same person in real life in the movie.
Reeves did a good Superman impression but Downey 'IS' Stark.

you also have to realize that plenty of people portrayed Superman before Reeves while Stark has never been portrayed.

There's no doubt in my mind that RDJ will appear in Avengers 2. The finality of Iron Man 3 has me doubt anything beyond that though.

I hhhhhate the idea of recasting. Honestly I'd rather see Stark killed off (Joss loves doing that), or at least gracefully retired. There's enough characters in Marvel's roster to keep them going for decades with or without Stark. The film universe can't exist like the comics do, actors age and the characters should too. There's also only so many films that can be made at a time. If Marvel continue to layer in fresh characters among established ones there's so many opportunities.

Gwyneth Paltrow talking to Geek Nation (skip to the 6:35 mark):
“I don’t think there’s going to be [an Iron Man 4]. I think we’re done with Iron Man.”

Gwyneth Paltrow talking to Digital Spy (skip to the 1:40 mark):
“They haven’t yet… They’re trying to make a deal with Robert [Downey Jr.] right now, but Robert likes me around so, you know, I’m sure I’ll pop up here or there or somewhere.”

Gwyneth Paltrow talking to Yahoo! Movies (skip to the 4:15 mark):
“If it ends then it was great fun and I’m so happy I was a part of it. And if they make another one, I’ll be there. For about 5p… I don’t get Robert’s pay”.

Yeah but she is far from someone not in the know

Of course, but she has said a few different things very recently. Perhaps it is about negotiations at this point.

My point was-- nothing has been decided, if only based on Gwyneth having given three different answers to essentially the same question (there's probably more; I didn't watch all of her interviews from this press tour).

I've seen people freaking out over that "no more Iron Man 4" quote from her, yet no one has really brought up the fact that she had given other answers to that question that are far from being concrete.

I couldn't remember where the quotes were from, but I did remember that she said there were negotiations ongoing. Thanks shuffleboard.

It would totally blow my mind away if IM3 was the last.

Yeah, I think most of us would have pegged Avengers 2 at the least as his last.

Iron Man 3 is the last movie on his deal. He doesn't have a new contract or deal set up yet after Iron Man 3.

A 4th Iron Man film is so far off, I doubt they've made any kind of decision about it. Maybe they won't for another couple of years. I wouldn't worry about anything Gwyneth has to say about it. Hell, if they recast Tony Stark, they'll probably recast Pepper as well.

Sure, but recasting RDJ just seems like such a bother that I think they might just wait until after Avengers 2 to recast and I wonder if RDJ could easily pass up another Avengers movie.

I wouldn't be surprised if "Iron Man" comes back for Avengers 2 or Iron Man 4. Nothing is impossible when it comes to storytelling.

At this point, I think it could be safe to assume he'll be back for Avengers 2.
If Iron Man 3 makes as much money as Avengers (1 billion+), an Iron Man 4 looks promising for late Phase III.

I don't think Iron Man 3 will make as much money as The Avengers. I think the Avengers had a draw beyond any of the solo films.

In the recent GQ profile on Robert, it sounded like he was nearing the end of his Tony Stark career. To me, this character isn't like James Bond, where audiences would accept a new actor in the role; Stark feels more like a modern-day Indiana Jones. You can't separate the role from the actor. Have you given thought to where the character goes if Robert steps away?

Well, look, I don't think Robert will be playing this character for another 30 years, and I certainly hope the character stays in movies for the next 30 years -- just like James Bond. I would say before George Lazenby and Roger Moore, Sean Connery was James Bond. It will take a while to fill any shoes, whether it's filmmaker shoes or writer shoes or certainly actor shoes. I think Tony Stark is an interesting enough and rich enough character that he can persevere. That being said, I hope that doesn't happen any time soon. It certainly is our plan to continue to have Robert Downey in the persona of Tony Stark for many, many years to come.

Well, hopefully it at least means they aren't planning to have Stark die off in A2 or IM4, and be replaced with Rhodey, like I think some folks were speculating.

you guys see the RDJ interview on the daily show? He asked Robert if you will continue, andhe said with a laugh, I don't know. and John mentioned the contract, and robert said, I had a long contract, and we are renegotiating...then he winked twice...so..I think it's safe to say he'll be back

God I hope so. I really, really hope so.

I don't see him retiring any time soon. I see him as Hugh Jackman is to Wolverine. He seems to love the character way too much and the fans to let it go. On every red carpet, he literally looks like a kid in a candy store lol. He loves doing this. And it's not like he needs to do a lot of action - Iron Man's a suit as Whedon pointed out in an interview so he could easily just hand all or most of the action over to a stunt guy.
