I recall RDJ only being signed to 4 pictures (IM, IM2, IM3, and Avengers). So do you think he'll stick around for more after IM3? And if not, who the hell could possibly replace Downey?!

That's a tough one I mean if their looking for an actor in their early 40's by the time film starts rolling than that actor would have to be in his 30's at this time.

I'd go with Colin Farrel since he's a former Hollywood badboy as RDJ was.

Unless Disney/Marvel gives him a small island as payment and gets a time machine, yeah this is RDJ's last movie.

The next Tony is going to have it tough.

Farrel is a good choice btw, one of the actors I wanted before RDJ got cast.

I'm hoping he at least comes back for one more, even if it's him co starring in Avengers 2.

Downey's replacement should be as young as Chris Evans to fill in many movies and would look as smart as Downey so people won't miss RDJ. Iron Man doesn't need to be an American so I seriously think the next actor will be outsourced. Personally I find Farrell acting is too dark as Downey substitute.

I don't know if they will throw the Teen Tony curve to compensate a younger Tony Stark actor. Either that or bring Black Panther/Ant Man as the Avengers scientist-technologist.

An Iron Man film without RDJ........

I can't imagine it.

You know, I mean...now that I'm thinking about it...

If you've seen the guy at comic-con, it's pretty obvious that he loves the fans and loves what he's doing. He also obviously likes keeping busy with his movies. Maybe he would be willing to continue as Tony Stark past IM3.

After all, after IM3, I could see them putting the Iron Man franchise to rest for a little while and just having Tony show up in other Marvel films. That would only require RDJ to show his face for a few minutes here and there. Otherwise, he'd just lend his voice to the visual effects of Iron Man flying around and kicking ass...

I want that man in an Iron Man suit until he can't walk no mo.

This. Finish it with 3 and whatever Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. movies you have down the line, then when they decide to reboot Iron Man, do it like 2 decades later when it's a-ok to resurrect a movie.

The thing about reboots in the MCU is that they're pretty damn unnecessary. Ever.

Sony and Fox like rebooting things because they only have access to so many characters, so once they feel things getting stale, they feel it's time to start fresh.

If things get stale for a character in the MCU, you can just focus on films featuring other characters and maybe just have the "stale" character make some cameos. And if you want to make another film with said character, a recast doesn't necessarily constitute a reboot (we've already seen as such with Rhodey and Bruce Banner).

I'd rather the MCU just continuously work forward without reboots. In fact, with the MCU, I don't think they are even possible. If you reboot one character, you have to reboot the entire MCU. Recasts will inevitably happen, but reboots I don't think ever will.

yeah i'm just tired of the word reboot. What will make or break the new spider-man for me is whether its the same story. I like originality and the word reboot is dangerously close to remake and that means a lack of originality. imo

^ Well said. The other kind of reboot I don't like is when they essentially make a sequel, but they recap the character's origin and make an arbitrary change to "prove" to the audience that it's a reboot, for the sake of appearing "fashionable" (since reboots are all the rage right now).

IMO, 2 decades is far too long. There's no reason to need to wait so long. 7-10 years is plenty of shelf-time, IMO.

7-10 years reboot cycle? That is just insane! Hollywood is repetetive enough as it is. We don't need films being remade every 7-10 years, especially films of good quality. It has to be at least 15+. Imagine if they remade Inception in 7 years or Shawshank in 2001!

Those aren't serialized films(and frankly I couldn't care less about either of them, anyway). But serialized film properties(like superheroes) are different. They're meant to be ongoing in perpetuity. And I never said a reboot necessarily. It could just be a new take w/o crapping all over what came before.

I only think rebbots are warranted when they f---- up a property and it needs to be corrected, or the property has gone on so long(James Bond, Star Trek) that all that is left is a reboot.

I could see him maybe coming back for a second Avengers film. I don't really see him coming back for anymore beyond that except for maybe cameos.

I hope he continues as IM through a series of The Avengers films. I'd rather have The Avengers 2 than Iron Man 3.

Also, I hate reboots. If they remake this thing - which is simply absurd - I fear it'd go the Spider-Man 3D route :(

In a few years, they ought to be advertising films that it's RETRO-2D. Sheesh.

I'm the opposite... I wanted Iron Man 3 more than Avengers 2. Apparently, John Favraeu did, too. :(

I think it should be Downey Jr's last IM movie and THE last IM movie overall.

downey loves the IM franchise and the MCU. we will probably see him playing stark in 15 years from now

edit:

I kinda feel, the Iron Man solo films probably should be just a trilogy (lets face it, few franchises have made it past the third film with success) but, with the story and character continuing into the avengers movies, its not like it needs to be wrapped up or come to an ending…

they probably should shift focus to the avengers an other possible spin offs...

though, his original contract maybe up soon, it would be kinda foolish not to renegotiate a new contract, and they would be foolish not resign him....

Will the Iron Man film series continue without after a third film? I mean without it being rebooted or something. Downey or not, could Iron Man 3 be a end to a trilogy?

I'm sure they'll continue, they've been pulling in the most money after the Spider-Man movies. But as far as them rebooting it? I hope they don't, they should just keep it going like the Bond movies or the Kilmer/Keaton Batman movies.

Although I feel sorry for the next actor that plays Tony.

I don't mind if they stop making Iron Man films after 3 and maybe reduce his role in the Avengers 2 and possibly 3. Then they can focus on other characters in the meantime.
It's hard to imagine someone else in the role so hopefully there is a decent gap before it happens.
