Rise of the Silver Surfer DR. DOOM/Julian McMahon Discussion

That Dracula performance in Van Helsing was the worst acting I had ever seen in a big movie, ever, and that is saying something. He sucked in LXG also (as did both of these crap movies, for that matter).

So, in other words, HELL NO!!!

well the movies were bad but not the actor! if they give you a crapy script what can you do?!
thats the problem with hollywood they have talented actors but they hire screenwriters and directors with no talent no direction...no brains

Doom is becoming more and more like classic Doom over time. I'm hoping if they make a third one, we'll see him take over Latveria and then we'll really be in solid territory.

But that's just it. We have to wait and wait for each film to pass by before we can get the real thing? That is completely ridiculous. It's like saying "Let's hire a hack to do the Fantastic 4 films. The first will suck, second will be better, and finally the third will be good, so we'll make the audience have to sit through 1 terrible film and 1 decent film before we can get to the good stuff." But we all know Fox isn't that stupid...

Oh wait....:whatever:

After seeing the 2nd film, all Tim Storys talk about "Doom being full Doom" was hot air.
Except throwing a bone to the fans with the Latveria castle scene nothing else was different,it picked up right from the first films depiction of Doom.Though I will say the armor was better this time,a step up from hobo Doom.

Tim Storys Doom in my opinion just comes across as a poor mans Green Goblin, except Julians no Willem Dafoe.

Yeah. Story did nothing but milk a sorry Doom. First he and his team decide to not show Doom in any previews or screenshots as if they had something 'cool' to hide, then he goes in all these interviews saying we will see, and I quote him, "FULL BAD ASS DOOM." I'm sorry Mr. Story, because I saw this film but did not happen to come across a "FBAD"

Yeah and I guess Julian McMahon's Doctor Doom performance wasn't "cartoony" right.

My preference is for good comic book films that show respect to the characters.Sorry

Then what are you doing in this thread?

Damn does that sounds familiar *scratches head*

I fully agree.

yeah I don't think I could stomach another Tim Story interview where he promises "full Doom" again.

Toy Fair sum this up perfectly, if Doom was a real person he could sue Fox/Tim Story for defamation of Character.:woot:

Yes, that is what pisses me off the most. Story's false advertisement. In every interview he promised us a badass real Doom. I wouldn't be as angry if he hadn't have said anything about Doom at all.

I get the feeling that it was his intention, but once he saw the budget he decided otherwise. Why, though, he chose to continue the myth well after they had rendered Galactus into the film is the confusing part.

I personally never believed Story' story in the first place.

Please tell me someone did not suggest that the actor who played Dracula in Van Helsing should play Dr Doom.

PLEASE TELL ME THAT DIDN'T JUST HAPPEN!!

I hope can someone PLEASE explain to me a) how the hell did Doom get back to normal b) why the hell did he put on another armor anyway?

when the surfer blasts his cells in all directions, when they come back together the healing begins.....if you noticed the armour was a suit of armour of his ancestors....its probably along the same lines that the surfer was able to heal sue...I can't remember, but I think he did the same thing to Sue in the novel, but it was changed for the movie.....not sure...

a) they needed to show McMahon's face (he is a star); b) he put another armor because the team that produced/directed thinks the real Doom is impossible to do on the slverscreen. :whatever:

That's the mind of those people. It is disgusting.

To be fair, the story contrived a way for both Michael and Julian to be seen outside their costumes.

Yeah, it felt contrived. Doom is all wrong in the movies, he never feels like a commanding, thinking leader, he feels like a smug, smarmy guy with a chip on his shoulder.

And are we surprised? No. It's all about "face time" for actors today. Look at the Spider-Man films. Tobey rips the mask off at ANY OPPORTUNITY. He rips it off in public view, he rips it off in the middle of a fight, he rips it off because his neck is sweaty. Even Venom was seen more frequently with a Topher Grace-head than an actual VENOM FACE. And "New Goblin" worse his little paintball mask for approximately 10 seconds of screen time.

Yeah. That's freakin ridiculous. The screen time in which Spider-man is in his full costume (without being teared up) or with the mask is too small. One could think everybody in NY already knows his face, carelessly offered with his Spidey costume. :whatever:

Yeah, that has become annoying in Spidey 3... But in all honesty, Brock DOES the face exchange thing. I´d say, for the screentime Venom was in the movie, he appeared with the Venom face a good deal of the time.

I agree I don't like Peter always taking the mask off in the Spider-Man movies. Raimi says it's because he just wants everyone to see his face and feel his emotions in the final battle.

Jackman wasn't poor in Van Helsing, nor was Connery in LXG, but this guy sucked in both.

He is a dimestore actor, and totally wrong for the role of Victor Von Doom.

I say to him, HELL TO THE NO!!!

has anybody here ever read the doom tale that john bryne wrote in 1983 with dooms gauntlet tearing the cover

Yeah thats a really good issue, its like a day in the life of a super villain.I like when Doom has the scientist test out the device knowing that it doesn't work.

Byrne wrote a great Doom, this issue/arc and the Lex Luthor/waitress tale are my favorites of his writing.

that's not false advertisement...that's called lying. Tim Story is a liar, a crappy director, and he ****ed up Doom TWICE!!! (not to mention Galactus) he's the Fantastic 4 fan's trifecta from hell :cmad: :cmad:

Edited: Please do not by-pass the censors, they are put in place for a reason.

Yes, as a matter of fact I had mentioned this particular issue in a previous post. It's from Fantastic Four #258. If there's anyone out there that would be interested in seeing a full scope of Doom's complex character, then this would be a great place to begin. If the people behind these FF films had used this as a blue print for "screen" Doom, then I doubt there would be any fuss on these boards. In order to make your character great and memorable, you need to have faith in him first. A good example would be George Lucas' Darth Vader. Unfortunately, Story and company apparently showed little or no faith in their Doctor Doom, failing not once, but twice.

So I watched FF2 yesterday, and I must say that was an excellent Norman Osborn that Julian McMahon was playing there.

Maybe I am crazy...but first off, there was no Norman Osborn clone this time in FF2....okay, what did we have this time that was Doom-like: we had the manipulations, the plotting, the genius, outdoing Richards, yelling Richards, the throne, Latveria, power mad, the bad ass armor, and the theft of the cosmic powers....what did I miss that is bad about Julian McMahon playing as Doom? Well, I know I am not alone on this board who felt that Doom was much improved and a lot closer to what he is suppose to be so I am not going to argue....

I'm with you as well. He has no similarity to Osborn anymore. Thank god. However, I still think he'd be better off with an accent and a deeper voice. Oh well, he still kicked ass in this movie and was one of my favorite aspects of the film.

If I were Fox, now is the time I'd start advertising Doom's role in th efilm. They've been hiding him as much as possible, but if you start pimping him out, you might get a new element of the audience. Similar to how Universal got more people in line for The Lost World once they started advertising a few weeks after the movie was out... "Oh yeah, and then a T-Rex hits San Diego."
