Woo-hoo...over 400 posts on this particular thread....LOL....anyway, I am personally excited about Doom and it makes me happy to hear that if Don Payne had the first movie, he would have made Doom "our Doom" instead of going corporate...but he says I think we are getting there...which means a complete and total 616 transformation could still be coming in F4: 3...but in the meantime, I bet we are going to get a pretty good faithful version of Doom...just if nothing else, we are adapting the good doctor and his
Here is a full body picture of Doctor Doom as he appears in the new Fantastic Four: ROTS video game. I'd say it's safe to assume that it closely resembles the final version of his film counterpart...
I just don't know where the difficulty lies in translating this character's looks to the big screen.
* They accomplished it with the Four's costumes
* They brilliantly carried over the Silver Surfer's look
So...what the hell is wrong with Dr. Doom's translation? It just boggles my mind that they refuse to pay homage to the character's comic look. If they stuck with it, he'd look so unique and different from any other iconic villian out there. Instead what they've chosen above looks like a high-tech take on Skeletor.
And the legs are disgusting things...where's the armor.

I have to agree, Cal. Why couldn't they have used those sketches on the previous page? Yet we know that the Suits in their ivory tower were fighting Tim and the costume designer all the way.
Well, you always have to go back to the comics, that's the source material, certainly because we're doing the Silver Surfer story we're pulling from #48-50, right? And we're also doing 57-60, I believe it's a Dr. Doom/ Silver Surfer story, and we're also using moments from "Ultimate Extinction" as well, a couple of things, and some new stuff that I've thrown in.
He doesn't even sound like he was sure about the storyline for 57-60... would it have been that difficult for Avi to hand these writers a copy of the Fantastic Four Masterworks or Essentials and familiarize them with the source material??
But since he at least acknowledges that Doom had to be a "do over " I will cut him some slack.
And I have to agree that they should give Victor a vacation after this. I wouldn't mind a cameo appearance in season 3, just to show that he's still around but the focus should be on another opponent. The trend in Marvel has been to use him sporadically for quite some time. Heck, it was almost 2 years before he showed up back in the MU after all the other heroes came back after Heroes Reborn/Onslaught. And McDuffie won't even be able to use him in the FF for at least 18 months because Bendis wants to use him in a big Avengers storyline.
I would love to see the Frightful Four show up (even if we can't have the Sandman).

I agree 100%, and the baffling thing is that, if people complain that the new design looks too much like character X or character Y, they have no defense. If they did the classic design and people complained, they could always say: "Jack Kirby created this design long before character X or character Y existed."
If they went with the classic look:
1. It would look great
2. Fans would be happy
3. Nobody could complain that they ripped off the design
4. They'd save some money on artists, and they could save some development time and get right into it.
I can live with what it looks like we're going to get . . . and I like that he'll at least have some armor, but I don't get why they can't get it right when getting it right is easier than getting it wrong.
They had the mask in the first film for cripes sake. For all the complaining we did, I don't remember anyone complaining about the mask, so why did they change that?!?!
Keep the mask. Design some basic armor that matches the mask. Throw a green hood, cape and tunic over it and you're done. Simple!

Maybe it was just a case of a misplaced comma.

In the sense that he's not sure about the issue numbers.

It just floors me that these people missed this opportunity to redeem the one character that people complained the most about. I can't wrap my head around it...I don't understand their mentality at all.

Here's my best guess of what happened. They started with this:
Which many people here liked, but never looked quite right to me.
They mocked up some maquettes and maybe some prototypes. They decided the hood and cape looked better and "tougher" in a brown leather. They found that the joints in the armor didn't allow a good range of movement and decided good movement was more important than the look (possibly justifiable though I would prefer to find a better, rigid system). Since time and money was tight, the simplest thing to do to get better movement was to use rubber.
Wow....I guess I am alone in all of this...Doom is to F4 what Magneto is to X-Men and I think they could only get better with the next installment. I envisioned a full scale invasion from Latveria with jets, the whole nine yards invading the US with Doom wanting to take over the UN....meanwhile bring in another character....perhaps Doom creates his own version of the Frightful 4....
To don the character in brown LEATHER is just plain stupid...who are they making these movies for anyway? I mean, seriously--why can't they just leave it alone and put faith in the concept that OBVIOUSLY has worked successfully for decades?
I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt with the first film's costume because they opted to go for the lame Industrialist origin. There's no forgiveness for this costume though...it's just amazingly stupid in execution.

I love your positivity and enthusiasm Goblin, but honestly, I don't think some of these people have an ounce of imagination or creativity. It'd be one thing to not honor the character's traditional look in favor of something BETTER, but these designs for the first two films are actually inferior. It's like they don't understand the regal nature of Doom...he's a MONARCH and they aren't capturing that element in his garb. Instead they are opting for this space cadet-looking ****.
You know what pisses me off the most? Looking at the concept art which is so blatantly close to what Doom is--only to watch this crap be the final look. It only makes me more sick. So close...yet so far. Like I said, it clearly has "Studio Decision" written all over it.
Personally I'd include Doom in 3 but use all of it to set him up. Have his story run parallel with theirs. MY vision:
-Give him amnesia after the events of 2 and he's half dead (bring him back if he dies in 2!) He constantly feels his skin blazing as though aflame ever since he had
the power cosmic ripped from him
His face is disfigured and never clearly shown.
-He's in south china with no memory and goes wandering off, and ends up in the Himilayas, hoping the cold will ease the burning.
-There, he fights his way through the snow and collapses, and wakes up in a monastery of Tibetan monks/ He now wears bandages on his face.
-There the monks help rehabilitate him somewhat and he trains. His mind becomes more adept, he becomes more authoritive, returning to old egomaniac Doom.
-On some monitors, he watches... and sees Reed being interviewed.
-He breathes "Doctor.... Richards....?" His memories all FLOOD back to him. He twitches and murmurs "...Richards....". The last of his memories come back and he throws up his head and bellows "CURSE YOU, RICHARDDDDDSS!"
-Using his tecnological knowledge, he is able to devise armour which will constantly cool the blazing pain on his skin. As he puts on the armour, he claims he is not Victor Von Doom any longer, he is... he is... his mind rushes back to Reed calling himself "Doctor" Richards and he says "Doom.... DOCTOR Doom..." as he puts on the mask and raises the cowl.
-Doom goes off and conquers Latveria
Condensed, it could be done in less than twenty minutes of a movie and fully establishes Doom for any potential sequels in all his glory without rebooting things.
The only way I'll forgive this brown-leathered design somewhat is if the legs look like this:
Then it might be doabe. But if he's rocking grey tights and a big man-bulge you can forget it. Sex does not sell Dr. Doom. At least not with me.

Great concept Doctor Of Doom, but I think it's waaaaay too sophisticated for the people behind this project. They need something dumber, pop culturish, hip and watered down to be comfortable in releasing Doom on the silver screen. Like I said, creativity and imagination is clearly lacking with the FOX team working on Doom's development. Somebody is just not getting it.

Oh absolutely. And I agree that it's ridiculous what we have (if an improvement on movie one) and I honestly think that if Story et al were allowed more freedom with it, we'd get a much more authentic one.
But a fan can dream, can't he?
What really irritates me personally is that One PERFECTLY set up a Real Doom in two- bringing him back to Latveria, rescarring his face but this time it was Reed's fault, etc... and that potential was squandered.
I do have to say that I don't loathe the screen cap Doom... the chest plate is a definite improvement over the long overcoat look they used. I just wish there was more of an armored look to the limbs, with larger biceps. I am going to play "wait and see" on that because I have a feeling they still may be doing some post production work on it and that's why we've seen very little offical pix.
D of D, your ideas remind me very much of Ed Brubaker's excellent "Books of Doom" from last year. That is the exact scenario of how Doom ended up calling himself "Doctor Doom". And he also provided very good motivation for Doom donning the armor, which tied into the demons both real and allegorical that haunted him as a young man. Marvel should have passed that one out to the writers too.

Oh I apolgoize, I should definitely have credited that, that's where the idea is from of course. I was merely pointing out it's not too late for them to rectify the mistakes they have made and "Books of Doom" could be amalgamated into a third movie.
Why should Doom's disfigurement be Reed's fault? In the comics, Reed was trying to help Doom, but it was Doom's ego that was to blame!
And Magneto being at the center of every X-Men movie has been their biggest problem. Both of these teams are interesting enough to not be limited to fighting the same villain ALL the time. Bring on the Mole Man, the Frightful Four, the Mad Thinker, Psycho Man, et al!
Well Doom does have his traditional garb in this movie, are we sure the lighting isn't bad and that those screen pics are a dark green and it doesn't look leather to me...but until see the movie and get the full gist of it, we should wait before we "completely" destroy Doom..

I'm telling you guys, for some reason 616 Doom is not the Doom they want for these films. I think it's blatantly obvious. Admittedly, if they did give us 616 Doom, he would change the tone of the film somewhat. He is an evil, mad-genius dictator after all. But that doesn't necessarily mean we'd have to go into LOTR scale evil, just Darth Vader scale evil. The film also doesn't have to become a dark broodfest.
