Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment are turning the Dr. Seuss book "The Lorax" into a 3-D CG animated feature, reports Variety.

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax will be co-directed by Chris Renaud and Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio, with Paul & Daurio writing the script.

"The Lorax" is narrated by a greedy entrepreneur who, despite warnings from the tree-loving Lorax, strips a forest of its stock of Truffula trees to manufacture clothing. The results are catastrophic as all the animals leave and nothing's left.

The picture is targeted for a March 2, 2012, release, which falls on the birthday of Theodor Geisel, who died in 1991.

Out of all the Dr.Seuss books this one has the most powerful message that I hope doesn't get shafted for glittery pop culture references and amoeba minded jokes.

This needs to be done with care otherwise its pointless to adapt.

Agreed. This is one of my favorite Dr. Suess stories, and the animated version is terrific. I really hope they don't screw it up trying to make too silly.

I can see the same groups who got angry over the environmental messages in Happy Feet and WALL*E having a fit over this one too. :whatever:

this could be awesome. but as the others have said..it has one of the most powerful messages out of all the stories and needs to be done right

As long as Jim Carrey, Mike Meyers or Steve Carrel aren't in it, it sould be good.

Can't wait for this. I must have read this story the most as well as watched the animated version they had when I was a kid.

Keep big stars out of it - go for genuine voice actors. Stick as close to the book as possible and this one might have a chance.

I thought a while back Robin Williams was in this *****.

I've always thought that STOP MOTION would be perfect for any Seuss movie. ah well.

i never read this one, whats it about?

It's in the first post:

This is one of my favorite stories from Dr. Seuss. I read it aloud to my first and second graders last year and they loved it. If they crank out a great adaption, I'm going to have to schedule a field trip to go see it.

Danny DeVito as THE LORAX?! That's just flat out BAD miscasting! Clint Eastwood would've been more appropriate!:cmad: The way they're doing this makes it sound like this movie's gonna suck.:csad:

Danny DeVito can do anything! :cmad::argh:

Okay The Lorax! :yay:

So whats next, the green eggs and ham animated feature in 3D?

and another live-action crossover featuring Mike Myers and Jim Carrey in "The Grinch Grinches The Cat in the Hat in 3D!!!"??

..............I just jinxed it didnt I?

But stop motion does not sell as well as 3D CG!

Anyway I love this book, the movie could be really good but at the same time I don't like how they stretch out these tiny little books into feature films. It's just so unnecessary and the short animated films are perfect.

I am the lorax and i speak for the trees.

Deep, mother****er. :awesome:

Why in the name of **** does Betty White have to be in everything? If she starts showing up in porn, I will welcome the apocalypse.

She is getting to be overexposed.

Never thought Id see the day when Betty White becomes overexposed.lol

She's hip and abstract.

This is frustrating. The Lorax was not a particularly bright or optimistic book, it was haunting and simple. It wasn't big or goofy or comedic, there was something melancholy about it that worked so well with Seuss's visuals. To see them turn it into another Horton Hears a Who shows me that they're missing the point, but I can't care about this movie enough to get mad.
