Universal Plans Woody Woodpecker

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

Another classic cartoon character looks to be getting the big screen treatment as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that a Woody Woodpecker feature film is in development from UniversalPictures and Illumination Entertainment.

The character, a troublemaking woodpecker with an iconic laugh, first appeared in one of Universal's "Andy Panda" shorts in 1940. He was then voiced by animation legend MelBlanc. It wasn't long before Woody became the star, his cartoon legacy vastly overshadowing that of Andy Panda.

Blades of Glory writers John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky are said to be preparing a script and there's no word yet on whether or not the film is planned as a full CGI feature like Illumination's Despicable Me and the upcoming The Lorax or a CGI/live action blend like their Hop.

*******

I'll be looking forward to this if it isn't live action/cgi blended.

I hope they make it in CGI.It'll be interesting to see how he reacts to everybody he encounters.

Love Woody Woodpecker, I hope Droopy & Chilly Willy are in the movie also because they would probably never get a movie of their own.

I think Droopy is popular enough to get his own movie.

I guess with the success of Alvin & The Chipmunks and The Smurfs, we'll be getting more and more CGI live-action movies based on 80's cartoons. I guess the parents who grew up on those cartoons are now taking their children to see those movies, and this explains why they are doing so well at the box office.

I'm interested to see how they'll bring Woody to the big screen & what kind of plot do they have in mind. Also, Droopy is currently owned by Turner Entertainment Co, & Woody Woodpecker is owned by Universal according to Wikipedia, so I don't see how Droopy can make a cameo in it.

I don't think Woody was created in the '80s. *scrolls the page up* Yup, definitely not the '80s.
:oldrazz:

Also, I don't think Droopy was created by the Woody Woodpecker guy. I think he was a Hanna Barbera character, which means he's now at WB. If he ever gets a cameo, it'll probably be in that Tom & Jerry movie that's supposedly being made.

I'm expecting the worse. Something along the lines of The Smurf film.

I loved the Woody Woodpecker Show though. Especially chilly willy.

The second they announce a Gertie the Dinosaur movie, run.

That's definitely part of it. Although I grew up in the 80s some of these characters reach way back. I was familiar with all of them through reruns. Some of which they probably don't show anymore.

No. They must train a real woodpecker. Now that CGI Woody interacting with real people might be formidable. Never seen such thing before though, so I couldn't really tell.

Sorry always watched them together so I thought that they were part of the same cartoon series/franchise, should have done better research.
