Half-Life (the first one) is pretty much The Thing, Alien, and The Mist rolled into one.

I know. Which is my point with a lot of video game stories. It is what makes me laugh when people talk about adapting them to film. They already exist, as far better stories. :funny:

Which makes adapting them even more redundant and pointless. ;)

And all three are pretty good. Two of them are seminal classics.

Am I the only one not impressed by this? It looks like an average video game cutscene.

I mean, it's just one photo still. Seeing it in action and in motion is way more important. We have no context of the scene or what's going on.

This is probably the better representation.

One leverage that video game adaptation has (and maybe that's the risk too) is that it's able to cover different real genres. It's just that the property happens to be based on a video game.

So the correlation between Splinter Cell and Warcraft is less obvious than, let's say Captain America 3 and Batman v Superman. The later two are still superhero movies.

Which is why there's such a broad future for video game films. I know I keep beating this drum, but they can be so diverse it may not even seem they are adapted from video games. If they get one right or one very, very right, it could be the next step in the blockbuster.

Don't compare this to that. Compare it to works like Planet of the Apes. :gngl:

In the next 3-4 years, we're gonna get about 18-20 superhero movies. That's great and all - but I still want variety. The general public tends to get conditioned to like certain things - so if there's a tentpole that's a not superhero movie, they tend to be scared off.*

Mad Max, if it continues it's success, is a reevaluation. Can you believe that a 70 year old man is teaching us to remember how movie can be like. George Miller has been, and always be, a punk rocker in the land of Lala land, shaking the status quo a bit.

I think video game movies can just help out the tentpole landscape too. That's why I don't want Miller to do a superhero movie.

*Fast and Furious is the rare exception. Also it hits the right demographics too.

No. Mad Max isn't exactly original. It's a reboot of an existing franchise.

I don't see it considering Hollywood still can't get a handle on turning video games into great movies.

I agree. Though honestly, I'd take Half-Life to get to a Half-Life 2 film. I think that has potential to be something different and great.

Vile One you would be the worst game show host. Nobody would win! :0

It wasn't until Half-Life 2 when I felt the world building grew dramatically. Most of the cop layers and fan-art is mostly based on Half-Life 2 and its episodes.

Would you really need a HL film to get to the HL2 story though? I've always seen them as separate beasts. You have Gordon returning and G-Man doing his usual mind tricks, but it takes place somewhere else than the first game, and I don't know if you need to set it up beforehand. You could probably just make the first Half-Life movie based on the HL2 story if you wanted to.

I have no idea. You would have to make the first movie be based on the first movie.

I think there would be too much..exposition if you started the first movie with the second film, you know? It's not impossible but I think the progression from normalcy to insanity was apparent in the first game, then the second game took it to a whole new level. That the point is that Gordon is suppose to be a normal guy.

Gordon is too much of an empty catalyst for the player to make anything that exciting.

They would definitely have to build up the supporting cast the most to make an interesting and gripping story.

He is. They'll need to take somer creative liberties with the character since he was designed to be a cypher. I would just say make him into an everyman who's an introvert.

I agree that's why I'm confused as to why its getting so much praise.

Me too, I'm not getting it. Maybe it's if you're a WoW fan it seems that much more exciting?

For me, the best thing about the image is that it show at least some legit faithfulness to the source material. That in itself is a bit exciting imo.
