Sci-Fi Dune

I'd say just go for it. I want to see more movies like Blade Runner 2049 in theaters. Sure it could be made for TV because there's less risk, but even if it's impractical, these movies should still exist. Take a chance. Granted, play it smart. Maybe there is a way to lower the budget and not have it cost so much as BR did. But we wouldn't have had movies like LOTR if they didn't take that risk in the first place. LOTR didn't cost $200 million. Villenueve can match Jackson in his passion and filmmaking, so I think it can happen.

Sci-Fi channel did a Dune miniseries in 2000. A sequel miniseries adapting the next couple books came out in 2003. I enjoyed the 2000 miniseries. It's far from perfect, but it adapts the first novel fairly faithfully.

The other thing is you can't do Dune for cheap either in 2017. It wouldn't be cheaper than Blade Runner 2049 unless massive corners were cut.

I'm a bit torn. On the hand a big Denis directed Dune sounds fantastic and something I'd surely enjoy...just like BR49. On the other I really want this to succeed and be a franchise so we can move pass Dune and get into more of the stories. I hope he's got it in him to direct something that is a bit more general public friendly I just haven't seen it from him yet, though I think he's a brilliant director. Legendary and has the tv rights as well so the possibilities for a Dune universe are endless if the first film can get it up and running.

Fun fact, James McAvoy was in the second miniseries.

That is where I first knew him from too, I remember when he showed up in X-Men, I was like that's Leto from Children of Dune, friends were like who from where?
Young woman who played Ghanima was excellent too.
FX were low budget, still great miniseries, to bad it's under valued.
Music was great too.

William Hurt in the Dune miniseries is the all time worst performance I’ve seen a mainstream actor give.

I haven't read the book so it's difficult for me to go much further. But is there a way you can simplify things and scale it down but retain its essence and still be faithful? I'm not saying make it for less than $100 million, at least that will probably have to be spent but I feel a less than $200 million film could be done with smart directing and writing.

Susan Sarandon was right there with him in Children of Dune. :woot:

I have it on dvd and have yet to watch it.

I heard the mini series is damn terrible on a general filmmaking level.

On a theatrical level, I really don't know how. I mean, especially with the Fremen riding giant sandworms.

I can see less than $200 million doable, but definitely not less than $100 million.

Like with Dredd, they did it by having Dredd and his partner confined to one building for the entire story. But by the nature of Dredd stories, serialized comic adventures, you can tell a story like that. With Dune, it'd be hard.

Ehh, I'm not sure about that. I guess if you were expecting something like a big blockbuster, then no, it wasn't great. I liked how the miniseries had a play like feel, in terms of sets and visuals. Do some interesting things with lighting as well.

I also liked the lighting of the TV miniseries. And yes, it does have some obvious theatrical (for the stage) aspects, but I didn't think it was that bad.

I'm glad Denis doesn't have any desire to make a CBM. We have this chance to see a Dune film and I hope it happens one day. It looks like a passion project.

Me too.I love that he calls whatever he wants to as it is and doesn't skirt around the issue.

Wanted Dune, done.

Would like to do James Bond, Will probably do one in the next 3 instalments of the franchise IMO.

Wants to do Star Wars spin-off like Rogue One, Disney would be foolish not to conisder him for the future.

I'd still prefer him to do Dune, because Star Wars is thriving. And James Bond too. These massive franchises will live regardless. They don't need Denis. Dune on the other hand...

I remember friends of mine thinking the Dune miniseries was really cool when it came out. I tried watching it, but it all just looked so fake and cheesy to me. I'm confident Denis will do a lot better than that show.

Never liked the mini-series and the original from Lynch felt too deviant and at the same time bare-bones. Maybe it had interesting visuals for it's time, but I saw plenty of fan art-work, that looked much less ghastly and more interesting, IMO.

I hope they'll make a brand new designs for the world and stuff. The Lynch version was so slimy and sleazy. :woot:

Now that's how you do a burn.

Villeneuve and Dune are such good fits together that i'm constantly fearing for the project staling or being outright canceled. I mean, there are so many factors that could make any studio get cold feet: All the weird concepts, the Dune book not being easily understandable by any reader, the film needing to be very long in order to adapt the story properly, Villeneuve's style not being mainstream and his recent Blade Runner 2049 having supposedly been one of the majot flops of 2017.

That said, Peter Jackson being allowed to film 3 lord of the rings films with such a big budget and small space of release between each film probably looked like a riskier decision back in the late 90s.
