Sci-Fi Dune

My main critique with the movie is that it ended. This was just such a great cinematic achievement and I’m so happy to have been able to experience it in theaters. That first worm riding sequence with Paul was one of the best theatrical experiences I’ve ever had. To me this movie is perfection.

She's not his second choice or even his first. She's not supposed to be.

I will be forever be in the position of the LOTR fans, but upon seeing changes to their favorite book, rolls with them and be excited over the changes rather than be a curmudgeon over it not being accurate.

I like the change with Jessica's baby, and I understand why they did it. There were plenty of changes in the source material I thought worked or made sense.

Thufir is a minor character for example. He wasn't crucial to the plot of Part Two, so they got rid of him. I didn't really miss Thufir one bit. However, it would've made more sense to see him getting killed off in the first movie, so Paul sees his friends and loved ones getting picked off.

Ok I saw it yesterday and loved it. Epic score. Can’t wait for more. Love that it wasn’t a typical hero’s journey story

Part Two's opening weekend in India is apparently up 129% from the first movie's entire run. In my own little corner of Europe, opening weekend was also more than twice that of Part One. Second week drop is going to be interesting. Hope it has a strong hold.

As long as it has Imax to itself, I think it is going to hold well. A quick glance shows me that weekday evening shows are filling up fast at my Imax.

Side note, while my Imax theater does not have THE bucket, it does have a nice popcorn tin and a big cup. Tempting.

I can't speak for Dune because I need to finish reading the book (and Messiah) but as far as LOTR goes I fully understand why all of those changes were made because not everything translates cinematically. I think the only time I've ever been surprised at the amount of material from the books that were left out of the film adaptations were for the fifth and sixth Harry Potter films, but even then the films still worked without it.

Rule of thumb; The best adaptations are not always the ones word for word accurate to the book but the ones who capture the spirit of the book. That’s so much more important in the end for a cinematic experience.

My friends went down to San Francisco, had a group film podcast IMAX screening situation... and he asked for the bucket (said they were out), but the manager heard and ran to his office and gave him one they must have been hiding - lol.

Actuals coming in at about $178.5M.

It's even higher with Sunday actuals.

With Sunday actuals included, Warner Bros/Legendary Entertainment’s Dune: Part Two spiced up its global and international box office opening weekend. The offshore bow rose from yesterday’s $97M estimate to $100.02M in 71 markets. With domestic now at $82.5M through Sunday, that brings the worldwide debut to $182.5M.

That puts Part Two's opening weekend a very, very tiny bit ahead of Oppenheimer both domestically and worldwide.

On the topic of Deleted scenes/Extended Cuts:

“I’m a strong believer that when it’s not in the movie, it’s dead,” the director told Collider when asked if he will release deleted scenes from the film for its upcoming Blu-ray release. “Sometimes I remove shots and I say, ‘I cannot believe I’m cutting this out. I feel like a samurai opening my gut. It’s painful, so I cannot go back after that and create a Frankenstein and try to reanimate things that I killed. It’s too painful. When it’s dead, it’s dead, and it’s dead for a reason. But yes, it is a painful project, but it is my job. The movie prevails. I’m very severe in the editing room. I’m not thinking about my ego, I’m thinking about the movie …. I kill darlings, and it’s painful for me.”
