Sci-Fi Dune

This is really shaping up

is the book worth reading ? I'm wavering between waiting for the film and reading the book.

It is one of the best Sci-Fi books ever. Probably one of the best of any genre, IMO. Dune, Dune Messiah, and Children of Dune are amazing.

Just found out that Dune had a 1984 adaptation. Guess I'm gonna watch this before reading the book.

I would say read the book. The 1984 film gets some of the basic structure right, but it changes how the weirding way works almost entirely. But, the 1984 movie has some nice art direction (especially for the time). It's an okay (at best) film while the book is a masterpiece.

Ha ha, great casting. The Harkonnens being repped by Dr. Selvig and Drax.

Stellan Skarsgård to Play Villain in Legendary's 'Dune'

Skarsgård will play one of the villains of the piece, Baron Harkonnen, whose family previously ruled Arrakis and has a long hatred of the Atreides family, plotting with the galactic emperor to destroy it. He is also the uncle to the brutish character to be played by Bautista.

My bet : either The Baron or The Emperor, maybe Count Fenring but that is a relatively minor role.
Answered before reading...well :)

No, don't, for the love of god, don't. The 1984 movie has a small number of positive qualities, but is otherwise not good. The book is arguably the best science fiction novel ever written. You only get to experience this story for the first time once.

Lol that’s exactly what’s making me wavering. I 100% believe in Villeneuve’s talent to pull this off, so I just cant decide to wait for the film or read the book. :funny:

On the other hand, seeing the film first back in the day gave me nice visuals "in my head" when I read the book(s). As you said, the art direction in the movie is great.
Edit : also, I liked the sound effect used for The Voice, in Lynch's movie, same for the Guildsman"delayed" translation during the meeting with The Emperor.

If you are waiting for Villneuve's movie, then I would say, read the book before.

Stellan was REALLY creepy in David Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo film. So I have no doubt that he can pull off the villainy of the Baron. The only question is, what about his weight because the Baron being hideously fat is one of his big character traits.

Also two Swedish actors in major roles so far, cool.

Yeah, he'll probably just wear a fat suit like Gary Oldman did in Darkest Hour. It will look real enough. Or maybe he'll go Full Bale and gain all the weight naturally, lol.

You know one of his sons (Alexander or Bill especially) would also be a solid choice to play Feyd I think.

Maybe too old, Feyd is around Paul's age who is played by a younger actor than them.

He will eat all the cheeseburgers, LOL

I’ve always associated him too closely to Lars Von Trier’s work. I even remember being weirded out that he was in Mamma Mia! once.
