Sci-Fi Dune

Yeah, LOTR is an example of a satisfying adaptation.

Dune isn't fantasy, it's pure science fiction, but this is an endless discussion for another thread I guess.

Lol, not Earth stuff falls into my fantasy bucket, especially if there are lots of barely pronounceable names. :p

Dune may not be fantasy but it takes place so far into the future that it might as well be.

hehe ok :) that must be a very large bucket you have :p

Well, since I don't read much fantasy or science fiction it's not so bad. I read mostly crime stuff. As I've gotten older I prefer to stay more grounded in my reading. On the other hand I don't struggle so much with science fiction or fantasy shows. I need that visual aid. I don't think I would have been able process all of Dune's characters prior, like the Worms and what everyone looked like.

If Villeneuve has the will, power and heart to it as Jackson did for LotR, it's doable.
Nothing is impossible until someone do it.

Well Denis did go on saying that Dune would become ultimately "The project of his life," so I hope he does have all the creative freedom to make the film(s) he wants to make, Eric Roth's script meeting his approval etc.

And I can definitely settle for two films close to 3 hours, especially now that we learn that BR2049 is around 2h44m. Two films should really be sufficient. Dune Messiah can easily be one film and I'm currently reading Children of Dune - so looking at the number of pages again, a 2-film project too?! Maybe CoD can be a singular entry as Dune was split into 3 parts overall.

DUNE CONCEPT ART! Would love to see them released.

Update from Denis. https://www.metro.us/entertainment/movies/denis-villeneuve-dune-update

Denis Villeneuve is feeling a little burned out. The French-Canadian director has every right to feel sleepy, too, as “Blade Runner 2049” marks his fifth film in five years, following “Prisoners,” “Enemy,” “Sicario,” and “Arrival.”
Villeneuve clearly believes there’s no rest for the wicked, because back in February it was revealed that the director would be overseeing a remake of David Lynch’s “Dune.” Last month I had the opportunity to talk to Villeneuve regarding “Blade Runner 2049,” and towards the end of our discussion I asked the filmmaker for an update on “Dune.”
“The thing is I’m not used to talking about projects that are still in the womb. We are writing the movie right now, and I’ve done concept art, but it is early.”
There’s a good reason why Villeneuve wasn’t so forthcoming with news on “Dune,” though, as the filmmaker quickly admitted that he needs some time to rest and recover.
“Honestly I need to sleep for two to three months because I have made five movies in six years. And I feel it right now. It is more than re-charging my batteries, though, it is also to reflect and think. I have done several movies in a row and thinking and always being present about what I was doing.”

Is it set in the desert?

For the most. I believe we visit 4 main planets in Dune.
Arrakis aka Dune, the planet that the spice is harvested from.
Kaitain, where the emperor lives, basically the capital.
Caladan, the home planet of the Atreides.
and Giedi Prime, the home planet of the Atreides long standing enemies the Harkonnens.

Sounds interesting.

Its about time that Denis takes a break. We shall await your return.

Yes, please Denis... do take a well earned break. And again, I still stick with the idea of having Sylvia Hoeks as Lady Jessica. She was brilliant in Blade Runner 2049 - and absolutely gorgeous too (especially with her natural blonde hair)! ;)

After watching BR49, Hoeks for Lady Jessica indeed. She can be tough, she can be elegant, she can be vulnerable. She can act. She's pretty too.

I really hope Denis does indeed do Dune.

Is Albert Finney still acting? I think he'd make a great Baron Harkonnen - and he's got the boomy voice too not to mention being 80 himself. And now that I think about it, Orson Welles could have made a good Baron had he been considered for David Lynch's film. ;)

Welles was Jodorowsky‘s pick for the Barón as well (he was going to pay him with fine dining).

My pick for Villeneuve’s film is Stellan Skarsgard.
