Sci-Fi Dune

I watched the Lynch film. Good lord it was shockingly terrible.

I love watching the trailer for that one, but then I caught about five minutes of it on TV awhile back and had to give it a pass.

As a Dune fan, it was a fun experiment to watch Lynch's film. The story itself has a fever dream quality to it. This was somehow more so.

Dune film is one of those cases, when I can't really connect it to the book. I read the book after seeing the film, and if the film adaptation is very nice, you start seeing actors and sets from the film when you read it. The book just feels too different.

The only thing that was surprisingly good was the Toto soundtrack. Of all things. It just felt like a work for hire. You had three things at total odds with each other that never for once gelled. The source material, Lynch and the studio who wanted to make this their next big Star Wars type movie/franchise. I couldn't wait for it to end. You had the great story in there, it just it was all hampered by terrible execution.

My main worry about this one is it'll be dumbed down after Denis saw BR2049 lose money. I know he's unhappy about being snubbed for best picture/director. And his recent comments calling BR2049 a monster, saying he shouldn't ever make a movie like that again. I think something may have been knocked loose in his brain. I hope i'm wrong but now i'm concerned this will end up being his first bad movie.

The David Lynch version is good, it just feels heavily abridged and the weirding way is dumbed down to a physical weapon, which takes out some of the intellect in the story. But, I like the score and the art direction a lot.

My feelings on the Lynch film: compelling performance art, but a poor film.

God I love Lynch's Dune...not necessarily as an adaptation but on it's own merits.

Anyway I'm still pretty worried about this especially after Blade Runner. I'm waiting for the "we just couldn't make it work" article.

I really want them to try. Dune is already a nightmare to adapt given how introspective the book is.

No idea how accurate this but a few people who attended Denis film masterclass last night saying he suggested DUNE could be split into two movies as there's so much material.

Last I heard, the intention was to split Dune into 2 or 3 films. But, that was ages ago, and I am not sure Denis was attached at that point.

Yeah also LEGENDARY bought TV rights to the material too. There was a suggestion like HBO could pick up and do a continuation an/or a separate thing which continues the film universe set up.

Splitting the first book into 2-3 parts film would be a great move.

I think this has a chance. Dune is one of the most popular Sci-Fi properties out there, so I can see it generating some interest. But, I also can see it being another Blade Runner 2049.

Blade Runner fandom is more niche. Dune could be more of a money maker.

Dune is a beloved sci fi book, but I feel it's more in sci fi readership circles. I know it's been compared to LOTR, but is it something where people just know it through osmosis?

Dune is a seminal, classic sci-fi novel. But it's world building is so strong, and it's premise is so far removed from futuristic sci-fi that it's almost more akin to like medieval fantasy in space.

However, I just don't think a movie adaptation will ever work because it's not really audience friendly material. Dune is a lot more psychological and cerebral. The "heroes" also do things that aren't necessarily heroic.

Paul Atreides assumes the throne as Emperor and essentially starts a universal Jihad to enforce his rule. Anyone who resists his rule are killed. Basically, Paul becomes a bloodthirsty tyrant. Not "evil" but he has likely billions killed.

It's not like Lord of the Rings where all the good guys are basically virtuous, morally upright individuals. Aragorn is borderline saintly as the would-be king. Even when Frodo is corrupted, it's due to the ring's influence and not through any fault of his own. Theoden himself was poisoned and bewitched by Grima Wormtongue. Again not his fault. Theoden was normally a strong and righteous leader who cared for his people and treated them well outside of Wormtongue's influence.

Well that's a positive.

I'm going to guess from this we are getting Deakins as cinematographer.

This better happen now, LOL! I might be more excited for Deakins than I am Denis, LOL!!!!

Here's the thing, Roger in an earlier interview said Denis never brought up working on DUNE. I mean Denis has worked with other DP's, in ARRIVAL it was Bradford Young and in ENEMY and Incendies it was Nicholas Bolduc I think.

Yeah, I'm not saying it's a sure thing but...
Why would Herbert re-tweet the story? and the wink emoji he left in the comments is pretty telling.

Anyway, here's to hoping.
