So Rock reveals some more details and it looks like they are not following the comics at all. This is a straight revenge tale. Hercules is anguished at the beginning as they show he is mourning his dead family (with many flashback action scenes to 12 labors. And then he finds out who killed his family and then it is a revenge tale.
What's he going to do, get revenge on himself?

From the interview and first paragraph it doesn't sound like they're throwing out the comics or storyline.
The story takes place after Hercules famous 12 labors, and has him traveling with a group of mercenaries and cashing in on his famous name until hes hired to train an army for an epic battle.
..that's exactly what the story ends up being for the comic books. It seems like they're adding more and paying respect to the mythology of the character but even if they did stray from the comics I wouldn't consider it a bad thing as The Thracian Wars wasn't that good honestly.
