if they do a 3rd film it has to be hound of the baskervilles!

I hope they do a third. It's easily going to get over I'd say $190 million at this point. Basically will have done comparable business to the first.

I think this movie's problem was that from a marketing standpoint it looked exactly like the first one. It was marketed exactly the same and it downplayed all the good material in there between Holmes and Moriarty.

For the movie to have held on as long as it says IMHO tells me that people and adults generally like and enjoy these movies and the duo of Law and Downey as Watson and Holmes.

Why not market it exactly as the first one because it seemed to me general audiences loved it so they get more of the same. I mean people today don't say they want something different, but the opposite. Despite Moriarty being Holmes archenemy I don't think he's that instantly recognizable to the casual viewer, also Harris isn't a big name.

Liam H, hindsight 20/20 and all. Clearly the marketing strategy didn't work out as well as hoped since it opened well below expectations. I just think the campaign could've done more to differentiate it from the last one sort of like Batman Begins escalation toward Dark Knight.

Well not every movie is lucky enough to have someone like the Joker to market around, I mean the job was done for WB. But I do agree that they could've focused more on Moriarty and how much destruction he is causing and balance that with what they actually did.

I think they should have played up that Holmes was facing a villain as brilliant as he was. They could have almost cut the trailer a bit around their chess game with each move causing a cut to a bit of action from the rest of the film. In any case, we didn't see it until this week because I thought from the trailer it looked generic and like a dumbed down version of the first one with bigger explosions. While I will say that this one was missing a mystery and did have a plot that was overly-simplified for my tastes, it was vastly entertaining because of all the scenes between Holmes and Moriarty. The latter is in those 2-3 minutes trailers for about five seconds each.

I do hope the third tries to differentiate itself greatly from these two.

I liked GOS well enough but not as much as SH1, probably because SH1 felt more like a mystery with some action while GOS felt like an action movie with some mystery. That, and Ritchie used way too much slow mo in GOS.

Ugh, I hope not. That book's been adapted to death. I want an original mystery, please.

The idea of Moriarty is cool in LXG, with him manipulating everyone to joining a team to get what he wants, it's in the comic, and the film, which was fine, but Richard Roxburgh didn't really fare well. I didn't really buy him as the Napoleon of Crime, this criminal genius in the end. It's funny too, being that he played Sherlock Holmes in a Hound of the Baskervilles adaptation.

The LXG film was an atrocity. I'm not a Roxburgh fan but there was little he could do to make that sh** interpretation of Moriarty any better. That movie, IMO, is one of the most pathetic comic book adaptations of all time. Moore's graphic novel is so good and they dumbed it down to the point where I felt embarrassed for the actors.

Yeah, I'm never watching Moulin Rouge because they few scenes I've seen were terrible and I'm not a fan of musicals, especially fake ones that use pop songs because they were too lazy to write there own. Too each his/her own though.

Missing out. It's a pop culture pastiche and kind of a masterpiece. Probably the best musical of the decade. That or Sweeney Todd. It's hard to say.

I'd say Sweeney is the better movie, but there is something about the raw energy in Moulin Rouge that is unmatched. I'd never say no to either.

The main theme is original and every cover is appropriate and crazy good.

I just have to say I saw Richard Roxburgh live on stage in Uncle Vanya a few months ago, and he was bloody fantastic. Didn't care for the play itself (I guess Chekov's not for me), but he was great. I think he's a very talented guy. And wow, it's been a loooong time since I saw LXG (shocker - I only saw it the one time), but I guess I didn't know who Moriarty was back when I saw it because I've never before made the connection that that's who Roxburgh was supposed to be.

Also, I :hrt: Moulin Rouge. Definitely preferred it to Sweeney.

Agreed. Moulin Rouge is a fun movie. It and Sweeney Todd are the only two musicals i watch.

I like Moulin Rouge, but if we're talking about all forms of musicals, The Book of Mormon is great, along with Avenue Q.

If we're only talking movie musicals, then I thought Chicago was pretty good as well.

Speaking of stage though, I've always wanted to see the Sherlock play where they insinuate that Moriarty was someone Holmes created to give himself a rival that could actually match him, since nobody but Holmes ever sees Moriarty in the books. I've always thought that was an interesting theory. I also loved how [BLACKOUT]they paid homage to that theory in Sherlock, the BBC series.[/BLACKOUT]

I need to see Book of Mormon. Avenue Q was great. And if you're interested in more stage musical comedies check out The Producers and Urinetown.

As for film musicals, MR and ST are the best since the revival started ten years ago, but you can't ignore the great classics like Singin' in the Rain, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, My Fair Lady, and Top Hat among many others.

lol. That's when I noticed how awful and annoying an actor he is.

Yeah, same here. I liked him in Moulin Rouge but he was one of the worst Draculas in an age of horrible Draculas (Dominic Purcell, Gerard Butler).

Whenever I think of Moulin Rouge I think of the Nostalgia Critic.

And Roxburgh wasn't that bad as Dracula. Overly theatrical at times, but I enjoyed him.

Finally saw this tonight, missed it at the cinema, did a blind buy on BD as I own the first film. The first film wasnt superb, but it was good and the cast was great, with poorer reviews I wasnt expecting not to like GOS as much, but I thought it was great, at least as good as the first movie if not better, with the latter probably being right for me personally.

The first half of the movie was a bit erratic, the editing was a bit nuts and you could tell they had a specific run-time to adhere too as some things went by far too fast and this showed in the editing, but the 2nd half of the movie was superb. Overall I really enjoyed it, and Jared Harris as Moriarty was an amazing addition to an already awesome cast. Enjoyed the additions of Rapace and Fry as well.

8/10.

I loved Fry's butler.

Stanley where are you going?!

haha this film is just a whole barrell of fun. If you go through this film without chuckling once you are some kind of misanthrope. And I thought the editing was great. As was the production design, SFX and action scenes. RDJ and Law are like brothers from another mother. Jared Harris is utterly brilliant as Moriarty.

I loved this movie, especially the ending, which was just brilliant. I have to grab this on dvd or maybe even blu ray
