E3 2008

Playstations Home's Public Areas Region Locked
July 17, 2008

We were given a pretty in-depth walkthrough of the current state of Home, including a couple of game spaces (images of those later), during which we asked the bloke as many questions as we could think of. Top of our list? Making sure that we would be able to meet up with our friends all across the planet in the various public spaces. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Home's public spaces are going to be region-specific.

If you want to meet up with your pals from abroad, then you'll be able to invite them into your apartment, but warping into the game space to bowl or play chess is not possible. This is allegedly to make sure that each region receives an "experience most suited to their tastes" as well as, no doubt, to keep advertisers happy. The last thing they want is Europeans seeing an advert directed at Americans.

Nope. They were showing it behind closed doors at E3.

E3 this year sucked bad. The only "big" announcements were PORTS! This show is gonna die-- I wouldn't be surprised if almost no developers attend next year, because apparently they have no interest in showing anything significant. I think that most developers are still resentful of the new format, as are many fans. Changing E3 to what it is now is like if you changed Comic Con to a press conference.

Oh yeah, and taking backward compatibility out of the 80GB PS3 = MASSIVE DAMAGE. :cmad:

How can BC be that expensive to include? I don't get it.

The boxes should really have in big letters, this system does not play PS2 games.

Though the rumored firmware update is supposed to fix the BC problem, but who knows if that is ever coming out.

You know as a Sony fan i am starting to lose respect for them because they are just not on the ball. This years E3 sucked. And Microsoft totally kicked sony's @$$. Sony keeps promising us , the fans that they will be having a firmware update to have Backwards Compatability and to eventually have patches for Trophies and Eventually launch Home. But they are really losing it All of these firmware updates and promises are Bull. And all Sony keeps saying is please be patient but you know what?I am tired of being patient i want some progress. I need some Backward Compatability Now!!! Sony should have programmers be working on it 24-7.

I am so disappointed with Sony.

To be fair, Microsoft was giving regular updates to their list of BC games that could be played... but haven't given one in over a year and don't talk about it anymore. Which is frustrating.

The Home Beta will be made available to Europe and the US simultaneously, it was revealed last night.

During a press conference in Santa Monica, SCEE President, David Reeves, said the online 3D community service would arrive "with the same specs, same support and at the same time in autumn 2008". He went on to say that an exact date for its release would be announced by SCEI "very shortly".

Home has been delayed by almost a year from its original launch date. The service creates a virtual social environment to interact with other PS3 users, launch online games such as Warhawk, play mini-games such as bowling and pool, share private content and show off your personal space customised with furniture, wallpaper and other items.

Jack Tretton insisted that "your patience will be more than rewarded" during Sony's E3 press conference on Tuesday.

Do we know what sonys "secret" game is yet?

Nope. They were showing it behind closed doors at E3.

Heavy Rain demo next. Alas, it is under NDA, so no identifying details will be tweeted.

Heavy Rain wowed the crowd. Hate to be a tease, but we can't say more other than if you liked Indigo Prophecy, you'll *love* this.

Thats great news. I LOVED Indigo Prophecy so Im definetly pumped for Heavy Rain. I almost forgot about it since its been so long since we've heard anything

I just want to know more about it. Leipzig next month right? Maybe we will see something there as well as GOW III. Wishfull thinking I know.

As far as GOW III is concerned, SCEE confirmed it will be released in 2009.

Eurogamer had a long chat with David Reeves at the SCEE event yesterday, and discussed Europe's "day and date" releases for the PS3's upcoming library for the rest of the year. He also mentions the 2009 lineup, mentioned that "coming in spring will be inFamous and MAG, and God of War [3] will be coming later in 2009," giving a vague indication of when we can expect to see the newly announced MAG. Something that wasn't mentioned at the Sony Press Conference.

Superhero 101 I wouldn't say MS kicked ass at E3 this year. IMO Sony's show was more solid, but MS had the shocker (tho they both were meh).

MS started out strong, but that was them showing demos of games we knew about a long time ago. The rest of their show was showing multi platform games, a Playstation Eye rip off, a Singstar rip off, and a Wii Mii-60 deal rip off. Even their shocker was about a game becoming a multiplatform game.

In reality all 3 of the big companies sucked at E3 this year with Nintendo easily the worst. No one really won, MS just came away with something ppl will talk about for a week. In reality tho I overall enjoyed Sony's show better, tho it was horrid too. MS's show had me rolling my eyes when they used chart to try and say 360 was dominating (even showing it higher than the Wii), and the singing and movie segment had me bored to tears. Their highlights as I said were things we knew about a LONG time ago.

Let's face it, E3 is becoming irrelevant. No one showed their big guns.

I'll say tho that E3's not all disapointment, I think the game makers all presented far better things than any of the console makers themselves did.

Infamous is looking amazing. LBP looks amazing as well. Dead Space is now a must buy for me. Think it's Mercanaries 2 (something like that), looked nice with the grass and trees catching on fire and the portable mini nuke, as well as the ability to vehicle drops. GOW2 looked amazing. Resistance 2 looks great as well and I think I'll go back and buy Resistance 1 just to catch up for that game. Another 360 game (tho I might get it for PC), Left 4 dead looked like fun. Fallout 3 also looked nice, but the backgrounds seemed bland, I think I'll skip it as it's just one FPS too many on a list of good looking FPS's. Resident Evil 5 looked amazing as well.

Also out of Sony's presentation I thought MAG came out as a nice surprise as well. I would have liked in game footage, but 256 players, 8 man squad's, skill based ranking? Games already has my interest.

I thought Sony shouldn't have focused too much on the Ps2 too much they should have talked about Killzone 2 I mean why the heck aren't you talking about one of the most anticipated games for PS3 but you are talking about GTTV?

I don't disagree that Sony didn't do anything great with E3, just meant MS didn't either, all three were snoozefests. I also agree with others on here have been saying on here tho that E3 is becoming irrelevant as time goes on. Hell I'm pretty sure Nintendo was asked something (forget what) and said they'd show more at TGS (think that's the show they mentioned atleast).

The sad thing is that E3 gets the most coverage. Since they closed the doors so to speak many of us only see it via G4 and blogs. You'd think they'd want the public to see their big guns to know what to look forward to.
