PlayStation 3 Not Playing Some Older Games

TOKYO (Nov. 14) - Sony's PlayStation 3 game console, which went on sale in Japan over the weekend leading off a global launch, can't play some of the older games for the original PlayStation and the upgrade PlayStation 2, a company official said Tuesday.

Sony Corp. had billed PlayStation 3 as compatible with the previous PlayStation machines.

But Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Satoshi ***uoka said some of the 8,000 older games weren't working properly on PS3, making the wrong sounds or images, and some couldn't be played at all.

He declined to give a number for the games that weren't functioning, but he said the same problem is expected when the game console goes on sale in the U.S. Nov. 17. About 16,000 different games have been sold for the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 in North America.

***uoka said the problems in playing the older games were not a glitch and had been expected. Sony announced the problem on its Japanese Web page Nov. 11, the day when the PS3 went on sale to lines of eager fans at Japanese retailers.

Users can punch in the name of the PS or PS2 game on the Web page, and a list will pop up, telling you if the game can be played without problems or not.

Yeah, which was stupid in it's own right, but to be honest, the number of backwards compatible games the PS3 will play when it ships is far greater, and the number of BC games the 360 played when it shipped. For the most part, it was only a select few games (mainly the best/most popular) that were BC with the 360, whereas most of the PS2 games work already and only a select few won't (which they said they are going to have patches for to fix the problem).

Yeah, I know BC with the Ps3 will probably be more varied, but to have this happen after making fun of the competition just seems funny to me, is all.

Oh yeah, I agree with you on the making fun of them part. it just isn't a smart move. And I did get a laugh at the stupidity of the comment made on their website too about this. WHen they were told that some games would work except with no sound, a Sony repepresentative said "well some gamers don't need sound", or something along those lines. It was up on IGN earlier. I mean it's one thing to constantly have a figurehead make stupid assifying comments, but the whole damn company does too.

hopefully patches will fix it up. I expected it to not be 100% backwards compatabile bc the PS2 wasnt but didnt expect the number to be that high

The main glitch is with FMV style use or BMG, the only games that aren't working in a more serious way are ones that violated Sony's TRC. Firmware updates will be done for those games in question. The ratio of games working to games that aren't is really really really really good.

FYI The reported number is around 200 out of 16 000.

yea soposedly with the upcoming weeks a new firmware download will patch the bug.

do you think in the patch they can make it so ps2 and ps game playback is sharper and enhanced?

or is that impossible.
