E3 2010

The 3DS looked pretty sweet, and I can't help but wonder if my PSP is going to become obsolete pretty soon. The graphics on that thing are easily within the Gamecube quality bracket, and it looks like it's going to have a lot of support. PSP is getting pretty long in the tooth, sadly, and Sony's press conference made this painfully apparent. Their only real announcement for the system was that they had a new ad campaign coming that was a spinoff of the Kevin Butler PS3 commercials. I mean really? Is that the most effort you're going to put into saving the PSP, Sony?

I think it's getting about time to move on to a new piece of hardware, because from the looks of it the developers are doing just that with the 3DS. It's got more power and is certain to have a bigger userbase, so Sony is going to have to bring out the PSP2 if they want to keep their brand alive in the portable space. Xbox-quality visuals, 2 joysticks, a built-in HDD, a touch screen and full mutlimedia functionality, please. And if you could somehow work a phone in there, that would probably help keep you in step with Nintendo despite them having the 3D gimmick.

Dang it. I want a true Paper Mario for the Wii. SPM doesn't count. It was way different from the other two and it was originally gonna be released for the Gamecube.

But saying that Microsoft had the best for showing one multiplatform game is kinda silly.

I was half joking. I wasnt impressed with any ones presentation.

If Kinect is priced at $150, it's going to bomb. You can't sell an EyeToy + Wii Remote hybrid at that price to the casual crowd.

I dont believe it will be that high, but i do agree.

Unlike PlayStation Move, I don't see how Kinect can be used towards hardcore games.

Well MS certainly didn't show anything, but ill guarantee you there will be some use. We know Fable III will use it in some fashion.

If Kinect is reasonably priced, ie not 150 bux, ill bet my paycheck from now, until the holiday ends that Kinect will outsell Move.

Sorcery actually looks like a half decent game. That's more than I can say about anything I saw for Kinect aside from Harmonix's dancing game (which I've already forgotten the name of). Whether or not either accessory is successful is still anyone's guess, but in terms of which I'd rather own the Move seems like a no brainer at this point.

Honestly, iv never had a desire to own any waggle type controller and still dont. With Kinect, im more interested in its non gaming applications. The ability to use Kinect to control my movies, tv shows, music and sports. Move cant do that. Now will i buy a Kinect just for that? Depends on the price. If that price is 150, then the answer is nope.

Im going to save this thread and revisit it after the holiday season is out. If Kinect is priced competitively, and MS has a strong ad campaign to go along with it, i see it easily topping Move this holiday. I think the casual crowd that MS collects from Kinect will top both the casual crowd and hardcore crowd that Move will gain. We can talk all about how Kinect is just Eye Toy 2.0, but to the casual crowd, Kinect is a big innovation that Move isnt. Rather thats true or not is moot.

Microsoft's conference was the worst by miles. If this weren't a family friendly website I would go into vulgar and graphic detail on how Sony and Nintendo "dominated" Microsoft at this E3.

QFT...Microsoft's conference was just plain embarrassing and so was their introductory ceremony. white ponchos, Circ De Soleil, and an anamatronic elephant...wtf does that have to do with GAMING?? it's almost as if the rich nuts at MS spent their money on things they, personally, had always wanted to see as kids. as for their conference, it's clear that they rushed through their REAL games (which barely showed anything exciting) in order to get to Kinect and we all know it just went downhill from there.

unfortunately, i didn't get to see the Nintendo conference but i honestly am not into Nintendo's games lately. nothing they showed really enticed me, including GoldenEye, which i played endlessly on the N64 (Daniel Craig in place of Pierce Brosnan just pisses me off). never got into Kid Icarus and wasn't digging what i saw from Zelda. i lost my interest for handhelds long ago so the 3DS did nothing for me. the return of Donkey Kong Country slightly caught my interest, but it's not something that i feel i NEED to play. in short, Nintendo is simply too kiddy for me. i like to delve into family friendly games from time to time...but aside from an adult-oriented game here and there, it seems that's all Nintendo seems to care about now.

which brings me to Sony and their presentations. started it off right with KZ3 and didn't dwell on 'Move' for too long (i actually dug the Move montage accompanied by Reel 2 Real's 'I like to Move it' and Young MC's 'Bust a Move'). they showed great footage from Medal of Honor, LBP2, Heroes on the Move, and Infamous 2. THEN they drop 2 bombs...Portal 2 being revealed as having the PS3 as the leading platform for development (imo this year's equivalent of MS dipping their hands in FFXIII) and Twisted Metal (not really a fan of the series, but i acknowledge it's following and how much this means to it's fans). to be honest, like many, i felt Sony's conference a bit too talky but they made up for it by sprinkling comedy throughout the dialogue, especially with the presence of Kevin 'Lord of Marketing' Butler. on top of that, Sony is confident and innovative enough to realize the potential of 3D and display their showcases in said manner. despite 'Move' and a tad too much dialogue, Sony's conference was games galore and they had something for EVERYONE (kids, adults, hardcore, casual, one eyed, two eyed, etc). the only things i would change would be less talk and more Motorstorm, Last Guardian, and Resistance 3.

last year's E3 i felt was a toss up between Sony and MS (despite my now confirmed belief that Natal was all talk and little walk). call my opinion heavily slanted if you must, but i think Sony definitely took the crown this E3.

I'm not so sure about whether or not Kinect will get more attention than Move. Sony is clearly counting on developer support to make Move a viable addition to the PS3, whereas Microsoft seems to be more intent on selling people on the gimmick of having no controller. However, at the end of the day, I think a lot of customers are going to look at both and say "this setup comes with a camera, and this one comes with a camera and a fancy looking controller." Pricepoint will be everything. If Kinect is in the $80 price range I can see it being a strong contender, but if it's $150-180 like many websites are listing it, then the Move is going to look a lot more enticing I think.

Microsoft's best bet would be to bundle the Kinect with an Xbox 360 arcade in a $300 bundle, which would be $100 less than the PS3 Move bundle. However, the arcade is being discontinued, and MS has made it clear that the $299 360 Slim will be the de-facto standard. The new arcade model might be $199, but I highly doubt it since the only thing they can take out to make it cheaper is the hard drive, and that's not exactly going to save Microsoft a lot of money if they want to drop the price by $100.

The current model 360 will probably remain in the Elite's price bracket, while the new "arcade" unit replaces the Pro's price bracket due to the cost of making it. Add a $150 Kinect to either option, and you get a bundle that costs at least $400, which is the same price as the PS3 move bundle. And then, shoppers are left with the same dilemma as before-- the bundle that comes with a normal controller and a camera, or the bundle that comes with a normal controller, a camera, and a special controller? It's a crapshoot, and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it's a virtual stalemate between Sony's better game library and Microsoft's bottomless wallet for marketing.

i'd be interested in those things if they were more streamlined. the way they demoed it yesterday made it look more like a chore than a luxury. every person who used Kinect to control the interface had to move slowly and clearly. as much as MS likes to mention Minority Report, their motions were anything BUT. MR has Tom Cruise using dozens of different motions and commands in various speeds while it seems like you have to make slow, clean motions in order for Kinect to read your commands. also, the voice commands require you to say "Xbox" before it reads? i don't want to have to address my console every time i want to tell it to do something. we don't even do that with PEOPLE. saying "Xbox" before your commands takes the fun out of shouting commands in the first place. Kinect might be able to do some radical things along down the line in a couple of years, but they showed nothing extraordinary yesterday.

Move cant do that.
actually, several news articles have confirmed that you'll be able to control PS3's interface utilizing Move. i'm not sure about voice commands, but it's ridiculous to think that they wouldn't incorporate Move to control the XMB. it IS a "motion CONTROLLER" after all.

To be fair, I think I'd rather control the PlayStation's interface without any controllers when I'm just going to watch a movie or surf the web and whatnot. I'll give Kinect that.

Also, I'm getting rather disappointed with some of the 3DS titles, too many remakes. I got the Wii and PlayStation 3 for that.

Id prefer to just use a remote as opposed to waving my hands and/or speaking everything I want to do

LOL...wasnt this the same way with all of Nintendo's handhelds? How many NES/SNES remakes made their way to the Gameboy Advance and the DS had its fair share of N64 titles

When playing a game, yes I want a controller. But I find controlling the interface hands free to be pretty kick ass.

God, I hope there's a surprise BF3 announcement. If not here, then maybe at SW Celebration 5.

I knew what you were talking about and I think Id still prefer to us a remote for that after the novelty has worn off. I lay in bed while watching media on my PS3. I can imagine it would be annoying having to get up and waving my hands in front of the camera to do control the interface or shout out whatever I wanted.

But there wasn't a Virtual Console back then.

You still need a remote to turn off your TV and adjust the volume, so Kinect as a remote alternative is a gimmick at best. It's not going to revolutionize how you interface with your electronics, and it sure ain't Jarvis.

People can complain about anything. Everyone wants a Team Ico collection. But all of a sudden a handheld Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64 is too much?

If Microsoft and Sony had any games to remake, they would.

Haha i dont think you would have to get up off your bed. This sounds like someone who wishes the Move could do that honestly. Not calling you a fanboy, just stating what it sounds like. I dont know what kind of set up you have, but i have a small home theater in my condo, i have 3 remotes. One to control my TV, one to control my surround sound and then my xbox/ps3 remote. Im all for one of those being controlled just by a wave of my hand. I think stating otherwise, is just sour grapes IMO.

That part of it looked interesting and was in fact the best thing of Kinect but when it comes down to it, Id always prefer a controller or a remote. I dont care if Move did that. I have a BT remote to play my movies with that works just fine and effectively

I want to throw the Kinect and Move into the damn sun and forget they ever existed.

I would rather use a universal remote than have everything controlled with a remote except for one device, which must be controlled by vocal commands and hand gestures.

IMO replacing one remote with Kinect is even less intuitive than the 5 remotes I've got lying around the living room, because it only adds an extra layer of difficulty and confusion for people who don't normally operate the rig.

After finally skimming through all 3 conferences, I have to say that both Nintendo and Sony nailed it this year. Microsoft was a joke by comparison.

Nintendo and Sony just power-housed through a hefty list of great sounding games and tech and both companies seem focused in the right direction. Microsoft seems lost.

I am glad to see that creepy ass Milo seems to have morphed into the much better thought out Kinectimals. What the **** were they thinking with Milo last year?

Also, way to go Sony for not pricing your motion games at 60 bucks, like Microsoft is.
