Bryan a bonafide main event player for nearly 3 years?

When he had MITB he was constantly jobbed. When he won the I-C, I mean WHC he was jobbed and made to look like a joke.
Exactly. He was a mid-carder & it was completely unexpected when he won MITB. What was the follow-up? A losing streak angle, a couple shots at the WHC to show Henry is a monster, his eventual cash-in (which they used to give us the worst part of Cole's heel run), followed by his heel turn as champ.
Personally, I don't have a huge issue with how he was booked during his heel run because he's supposed to connive & cheat his way to wins, but he was never at any point considered a threat (mainly because he was feuding with Big Show & Mark Henry) and he was certainly never given "the main event treatment" during that time. I'm almost 100% positive that he was supposed to be a transitional champ on the way to giving Sheamus the title... the problem was, his annoying mannerisms as a heel started to catch on with the crowd & coupled with the smarks at Mania 28 & the night after, having Sheamus squash him backfired.
That's when he finally started to get the main event treatment & was allowed to look like the equal to Sheamus & then he proceeded to feud with Punk through the summer of 2012 (with AJ as the focal point, mind you).
The irony of his WM 28 loss is that I doubt he'd be nearly as popular as he is now without it - for many die-hard wrestling fans, all they wanted to see was Bryan & Sheamus tear the house down at Mania & they were shafted of that moment. We know they were capable of it considering the follow-up.
Overall, I think there are 3 main reasons why so many people want to see Daniel Bryan as "the guy":
1) They want change. Cena & Orton (and now with Batista back) represent the status quo & the fans want something new. Bryan represents that to them... Hell, Roman Reigns is another the fans have chosen (and he's more of a WWE guy than about any other potential main eventer than anyone else who's come up in recent years), just not on Bryan's level. Know why? It's because he represents hope for someone other than Cena & Orton.
2) I truly believe that fans want someone who will deliver something exciting in-ring every time the title is on the line. How many times have we seen the same 'Cena-insert heel x' match since 2005? It's not that Cena is terrible (and his work in the last year proves it when he has
fresh opponents), but the fact that nearly everything about him is stale. When's the last time Bryan had a match over 10 minutes where the crowd was uninterested?
3) The fans see more of themselves in Bryan than anyone else on the roster. He's just an ordinary guy who followed his dream, no matter what. His size makes him the underdog & goes against the stereotype that WWE has perpetuated for decades. He tirelessly worked on his craft & his passion pours into every match.
