Eddie Murphy to host The Oscars?

Unless he gets cast in a Tarantino film or a Judd Apatow film, this will be the closest thing that we will have to an Eddie Murphy career boost, because he needs it.....big time.

He's in that new film Tower Heist, so we'll see how that goes.

If it was old Eddie Murphy, then hell yeah. Current Eddie Murphy? No. He hasn't been funny in years and it's terrible. I don't know if he's to blame for picking increasingly poor choices or if it's the material he's been forced to use in order to keep getting a pay check.

Yeah, my first thought was, "The Eddie Murphy of 1984?" I'm guessing not.

Eddie Murphy can be funny, he has the ability - it's just rare to see it.

Badly. It will go badly. I haven't seen the trailer, I'm just making a perhaps-unfair assumption based on the fact that it's a high-concept comedy directed by Brett Ratner and starring Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller. I'd love it to be good, really - because when Ratner isn't actually a terrible director, and Stiller and Murphy really shine when they have good material, plus Gabourey Sidibe is in it. But, I digress.

Still crossing my fingers for the return of "1984 Eddie Murphy."
Just like I'm crossing my fingers for "1990s Alec Baldwin."

Doesn't surprised me that Ratner would've wanted someone like Murphy to host the Oscars but if so he'll play it safe with the jokes, just the way Academy wants it.

I'm pretty left leaning as it were and agree with alot of his positions in that regard but man do I hate Penn. He's a smug A-hole and typifies everything that is wrong with people in hollywood.

I could not agree more. As someone who leans left enough, Sean Penn is a completely pretentious A-hole, who is overrated as an actor.

As for Eddie, I doubt they'll cut him loose, but if he does go for the jugular, I'd love to see Angelina Jolie squirming in her seat again like she was at the Golden Globes.

His old stand-up was so anti-pc it would mortify the modern hollywood types.

I think he'd be good. Its not like he writes the jokes or anything but at least he can improvise when he wants to or has to

i think it would be fantastic if he would do 5 minutes as a white man.

Announcer- Ladies and Gentlemen, your host Eddie Murphy.

Eddie in white makeup

Eddie- This is the only way i'll get an Oscar.

Watch the trailer and don't judge just on the names you have heard are in it. Matthew Broderick is in it and it looks pretty ****ing funny to be honest.

In some ways we need the old Murphy back. Hollywoods full of *****es now.

He'd burn faster than Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes.

Insulting powerful people never goes well.

I thought Gervais was genius personally.

I think Gervais went too far but not as much as some people think. There's a point where it's just not funny and he hit that mark a few too many times for my tastes but probably a lot more for those who were the butt of the jokes (most of Hollywood).

Gervais wasn't even that bad at the Globes. I've heard far far worse from him and other comedians over here.

They have problems with people that poke too much fun at others, like Gervais, or poke too much fun at themselves, like Conan.

Just out of interest, what ones did you think went a bit too far?

I have heard worse too but all I can remember is for an awards show it wasn't the right venue and I can't even remember what all I thought was bad taste. Comedy taking shots at people personally is something that has to be carefully crafted. I do like Comedy Central's Roasts for instance but that's (usually) good natured ribbing and people expect it.

I am interested in this. If he does well, he might be on his way back. He needs a career boost because I liked his 80's films.

Please don't show up dressed up as fat woman or doing the Shrek donkey-voice. :csad:

That's like all he's got nowadays. When's the last time he told a joke onstage?

Let the man loose. The fear is if they do it, they ain't gonna like it. If he plays it safe it will be a waste of potential for Murphy to really shine. I hope he isn't restrained. I get the feeling he could be.

I get the feeling he's going to be kept on a leash. Hard to see the Academy wanting anything other than vanilla...again. But then again when was the last time we saw Murphy really push the boundaries like he use to? I feel his best days are behind him.

finally! oscars are gonna be funny again.

One can only hope they'll be funny. It would be nice to see a non-fatwoman Murphy not doing the Donkey voice. I like the Shrek movies but that's not to say I want to see Murphy rehashing that character.
