Really if not for this being the adaptation if an existing work I'd be perfectly happy with Emily Blunt playing the lead. Goddamn did she work out for this movie. Hopefully the movie does something really subversive like have Tom Cruise martyr himself midway through the final act, and the rest of the climax is just Blunt kicking alien ass.

She's a much more convincing powered exoskeleton wielding badass, that's for sure.

Regarding whitewashing the main role: inevitable, since we're seeing a shift from JSDF to US Army protagonists. But making him an out of favor former REMF was an inspired choice. And having him be the officer in charge of recruiting more poor sods to be fed into the meat grinder ? How delightfully meta.

I am going to see the hell out of this movie. Probably multiple times. :word:

The movie looks pretty serious but it's nice to know that Cruise and Paxton said it's pretty funny.

This looks ****ing epic and man that trailer song, anyone got the name?

Side note, I was looking at some of the old "Black Lists" of popular unproduced screenplays. The screenplay for this made the 2010 list.

Looking back a few years it is interesting to see what movies have ended up getting made. Looking at various lists, the scripts from 2010 have been particularly successful in getting into production as many of the bigger movies from the past two years made it on the list that year including Argo.

That's pretty interesting, thanks for the link.

I'm kinda shocked that this movie got made. Usually you would see something like this in Development Hell and stay there.

Well, it doesn't hurt to have Cruise involved. Look at how Oblivion got made too. If I remember correctly, it was made during the time when one of the most helpful ways to get your script made was by turning it into a comic.

I'm a sucker for anything Tom Cruise. :p Say what you will about the guy, but he stars in some really enjoyable movies.

Cruise had a big hand in this properties getting greenlit pretty fast. No matter how bat**** crazy people think he is and despite his latest movies making so so BO numbers , Cruise still has alot of pull in Hollywood.
Having him attached to these movies meant that they could be made into movies .

Yeah, it seems he's at a point where he hears an idea, thinks it's cool, looks into it, and then wants to make it into a film no matter what others may think.

Yeah, a lot of time when scripts linger in DH, a big name is the thing that saves them. Watchmen is another good example. It was optioned quite a long time ago, even had some promo shots under Gilliam, but never came to anything until Snyder came into the equation.

I told my friend about this movie, and he said he'll watch it because he likes action/military stuff. He was pissed though because he thinks Cruise is a cliche choice.

Blunt is the entire reason I'll be seeing this in theaters the weekend it comes out.

When Emily Blunt met with Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman for the first time to talk about their upcoming sci-fi action movie Edge of Tomorrow, Cruise didn’t mince words. “Tom made it very clear,” Blunt recalls. “He was like, [intense Tom Cruise voice] ‘Em, this is going to be really hard. Listen: This is gonna be INSANE.’ [Laughs] So I think I was prepped for what was about to be physically the most grueling thing I’ve ever done — but ultimately one of the most exciting projects I’ve ever been a part of.”
Adapted from a Japanese novel, Tomorrow takes place in a not-so-distant future where an alien race is winning the war for control of Earth. A human soldier, Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise), somehow adopts the aliens’ ability to travel within a time loop — a power that allows him to die over and over again, each time learning more about the aliens’ strengths and weaknesses. Blunt plays Rita Vrataski, a mysterious soldier who used to have the power and now offers to teach Cage how to take advantage of it.
Along with Cruise, Blunt spent many of her scenes wearing a futuristic set of armor that weighed over 70 lbs and required five crew members to take on and off. “Even though the suits were challenging, it was something that we just had to embrace,” says Blunt. “Can you imagine trying to walk like you’re in one of those suits and they paint it in [with CGI] afterward? You’d look stupid. I find anything that can transport you to the world very helpful as an actor.”

I just ordered All You Need is Kill. Hope it's a great read!

Supposedly, the trailer will debut at screenings of 300: Rise of An Empire.
