Large new area to explore? Check!

Riding dragons? Check!

Everything else is just icing on the cake :D

How is the Falkreath home?

After doing some reading, I went with the one in The Pale. I really like the location and it suits my character a lot, but I have no idea how the others compare.

It's not done yet. But i'll take screenshots next time:yay:

It's near the bandit house near Falkreath. Forgot how it's called. it is defensible, because there is pretty much only one way in, behind the mansion, if i remember correctly, a cliff. Gorgeous view of the mountains though.

Cool. Seems to be a common theme, having awesome views. The Pale house has a great view of the valley, and when the 'northern lights' occur at night it's pretty magical.

I got my house all built, moved the wife in, made Lydia my steward (I figure she earned it after sitting around in Breezehome for months with nothing to do). I adopted Sofie from the streets of Windhelm and Hroar (sp?) from the orphanage in Riften. Still some furnishing to do, but it was quite fulfilling once I returned home and the whole thing had come together. Even got the character out his armor, hung his axe up on a weapon rack and started wandering around in regular clothes.

Interesting bit of fun, when I did finally get back home (after being kidnapped by and then subsequently killing Astrid) it was about 2am and three bandits were waiting behind my stables. I cut them down, dragged the bodies out of view of the house and went back inside. I don't know how long they'd been watching my house, but it's a good job I showed up when I did.

I really like the Falkreath home. I like the wilderness and the lake view. I've built quite the home w/ Lydia as steward, a son, a daughter, Ysolda as wife, daughter's pet rabbit, family dog (stray I found on the road after the owners were toasted by a dragon), and a bard.

I didn't even know you could have one in the Pale. Are there others? Can you have both?

There are three plots of land, and I believe you can acquire and build on all of them.

But, more importantly, what's all this about a pet rabbit?! I got some chickens and a cow and I just gave Lydia $1000 to go get a horse (she better not come back with magic beans!) but I didn't know you could get a rabbit! Is that an actual thing, not a mod? Who can you get a rabbit from...it's not a dead one is it? Because that's not really a 'pet' :D

I have the X-Box 360 version so no mods. I came home one day and my daughter had a rabbit next to her and said "Look what I found. Can I keep him?" I agreed and it has been hopping around our house and following her ever since.

The rabbit was a random thing my child picked up when I came home.
The dog I found outside Solitude; he was named "stray dog" and was near a wagon w/ two burned corpses where I had just a few seconds ago fought a dragon on the roadside. I made the dog my companion, fast traveled to my home, and then my child asked if we could keep him. The option for "yes" says that your child can keep him when he's not out with you. After agreeing he could live with us, I then dismissed him to return home. He stayed where he was and now lives in my house. My children and wife have programmed dialog w/ the dog.

I keep the dog and Lydia (my steward) at home to protect my family....it did not work. Last night my wife was kidnapped and I got a ransom note telling me she was with bandits in a nearby mine. I slaughter every bandit and, in thanks, my wife said "Back from some adventure I bet!" and then gave me profits from her shop.

Wow! :D

They've thought of way more stuff than I gave them credit for. I was already really impressed when I came through the front door and found the kids arguing with each other.

Your wife isn't Sylgia from Shore's Stone, is she? That's all she ever seems to say to me. I go down to the cellar for five minutes and it's "Back from some adventure I bet!"...what does she think I was doing down there?

I have Lydia protecting my home also, she fought off some wolves one afternoon, which was good.

That kidnapping thing is fantastic. I'd often thought it would be cool if they included a kidnapping scenario for either the wife or kids, I guess Bethesda like the idea too!. This would sound very strange out of context, but I can't wait for my wife to get kidnapped.

Have they done quite a few of these? When I was researching into the bug that ended my companion's quest I came across a ton of other bugs that had been fixed at various stages so I stopped playing (rather than restart from scratch) for a while in the hope/faith that as the bug was acknowledged it would be fixed one day. Took ages but eventually it was fixed so it's good that they do continually do this, even if slow.

But really extravagant icing too!

my game sometimes still freezes if i have a steward in one of my houses, and i go in one of the doors, and it also randomly freezes while outside if im covering ground, or fighting an enemy :(

Yea, the kidnapping was a nice touch. I was playing Skyrim way to late into the night last night and I was having a hard time keeping my eyes open. I was about to turn off the x-box and then I came home and found my wife kidnapped. Immediately ran off in a blind rage to slaughter ever last bandit as only the Dragonborn can. In hindsite, I should have asked my steward, Lydia, to come help me and redeem her failure to protect my family. (She once helped protect my cow and chickens from a giant.... I like to think she had a jealousy thing going and that's why she didn't exactly rush to help the wife)

just curious......but when you get married, does your spouse change his/her dialogue and how he/she acknowledges and behaves towards you?

that is, does he/she treat you like a spouse, like your married? or does he/she still treat you like a random stranger on the street?

likewise with the children you adopt? do they acknowledge/treat you (and your spouse ) as mommy/daddy?

They do get some extra dialogue although it's not a huge amount. Mostly they just repeat the same greeting over and over. They'll comment on the kids when they arrive, and they'll say how much they like any new house. They also give you money, if you ask for it, because the spouse will start a small trading business on the side. You can buy and sell with them too, and they have some neat stuff sometimes.

I'm not sure about the spouse/kids interaction, from what I've read of other people's experiences the spouse usually seems to ignore the kids completely. The first night my kids were home, they went to bed and then the wife came in, sat down on the chair between their beds and began drinking from a rather large mug. Given she turned to drink after a single afternoon with them, I'm not sure she's cut out for parenthood.

...I hope she doesn't go down to the cellar, I have so much mead down there.

I don't know about kids, but yeah, your spouse acts like a spouse.

The kids are a lot of fun, they argue with each other, ask you to play with them, etc. You can give them gifts, tell them to go outside and play, go home, go to bed, do their chores. I gave my daughter a honey treat thing and made an iron dagger for the boy. They ***** and moan if you tell them to do their chores or go to bed, but they'll concede quickly enough.

Of course, in the home of a Dovahkin the threat of "Don't make me raise my voice" takes on a whole new meaning.

^ thanks! sounds awesome.

so when's usually the best time, storywise, to do Dawnguard and set up your home in Hearthfire?

and what's the easiest way to make money early on to buy your 1st house? or should you wait till Hearthfire to build your own?

How your story plays out is entirely up to you, there's really no 'best' time to do anything. I just did what made sense of my character, dealt with Alduin, fought in the Civil War, then I happened to download Dawnguard and the random vampire attacks started.

I'm sure someone will know a better way of making money, but the best thing I've found is adventuring. My first character, for example, made enormous amounts of coin by sticking his nose in everyone's business and getting into as much trouble as possible. All the dungeon diving and body looting soon gives you a hefty chunk of change. By comparison, my second character has adhered strictly to only doing things that directly concern himself or the overall well-being of Skyrim and hasn't made a huge amount of money as a result.

Hearthfire houses normally take alot of resources and money to setup early in the game. It's usually easier to just get Breezehome or Honeyside or whatever you prefer and setup a house later. As for money, like James says, just rpg it and sell the extra loot. You'll have plenty in no time if you enchant it as it can boost the price by quite alot.

I just had a guard pursue my new ill tempered Orc character from Solitude to a shack a little over halfway to Dawnstar. That's one dedicated guard!
