Mystery/Thriller Elementary - CBS's Modern Take on Sherlock

Elementary didn't used to be on Thursdays did it? I recall it was earlier in the week.
 
Great casting with for Mycroft as it fits with our Holmes I think. Also about those pics of Lucy and Miller in London.... Wow. Lucy is quite... She's... (Jayne voice) I'll be in my bunk.
 
Good way to start the season. Ifans was a perfect choice to play his brother. The strife between those 2 is an interesting dynamic that they'll hopefully explore, especially with his brother's medical condition that Watson, not Holmes, now knows.
 
Did anyone else notice that when Joan wakes up in 221b that she is wearing a grey shirt with the Batman symbol on it?

By the way, I think they sexed up Joan's wardrobe in this episode a lot. I feel divided on that actually. Last season Joan was dressed the way I see many urban professional women in NYC dress, formal or casual. From the moment we see Joan this episode in Columbus Circle she looks like a woman in her late 30's trying to dress like a 21 year old. It felt off to me. On the other hand it's Lucy Liu for Zod's sake! I also have a thing for women who dress way to young for their age, especially provocatively so, we'll just see how far they take that.

I did find it a little odd that this was really a character focused story. The case was really besides the point. Nothing wrong with that, the show has done that before. I just think it was odd that they chose that kind of episode to start the season with. They must be confident that people are tuning in for the JLM/Holmes and LL/Watson chemistry and interaction.
 
It kinda looked like a Batman shirt to me too but didnt think it was for sure
 
I'd have to rewatch the episode to check again. It's only been one episode too to know whether her wardrobe is changed from last year's and I didn't notice anything unusual about it but I wasn't paying much attention either.

It seemed just sexier to me. And then there was her in that Bat shirt with the matching shorts and they kept her on screen like that for quite a few beats.

It's funny that I am reacting at all like this cuz I could not stand Lucy Liu circa Ally McBeal. I mean, I did not even think she was all that hot, but now that she's got some mileage on her odometer? Yeah, she's shaped up nicely. :word:
 
Nice opening episode. I think Ifans would've looked more similar to Miller if he didn't have the mustache though. Also, if they're going to visit London, they should've shown Baker Street and Marylebone of all places. The flat that Mycroft lived at didn't specify where exactly it was situated, but even if that was supposed to be Baker Street, they should've shown the surrounding area and recognisable landmarks around there. It seems like a missed opportunity.

Also would've been cool to see Holmes more around the city of London, especially in the East End which would be more associated with Victorian London.
 
The second episode was good, but I would like to see Holmes have a meet-up with Hugh Laurie's Dr. House. That would be so cool! Maybe even a romantic involvement between Dr. House & Dr. Watson?
 
Once again, this episode, while good, strangely again seemed to be more focused on the Holmes/Watson relationship and character history than on the case of the week. It's not a flaw by any means, but I find it odd. They had a more personal episode in the form of the premier already, why load up on character stuff so early? Will the next few eps introduce the season arc or is this how most of the season will be, perhaps building to a turning point for Holmes and Watson? (NO, I am not talking about romance. I think these two are not bonded in such a way.)
 
I mean yeah some of it's makeup, lighting, and camera angles, but still hard to believe that Lucy Liu is pushing 50.

She's Asian, so what's so hard about that?
 
44 is hardly pushing 50. Still, she's in good shape for what is considered an "older" actress. Although I don't think 44 is all that old to begin with.
 
Another new ep and another shot of Lucy in Joan's bedroom attire... Not that I'm complaining.

Again, the case was compelling and Sherlock was awesomely Sherlock (the "nefarious" bit made me chuckle) but the creative team is successfully threading really strong character stuff this season in each ep so far.

So... Moriarity has been writing to Holmes ? Or were those old letters? I find it suspicious that Watson's "E-Date" should show up and be dangled like bait in an ep where we see just how much Moriarity has affected Holmes. My theory? Date guy is an agent for Moriarity who is now more interested in revenge on Joan than besting Holmes. Or perhaps she is interested in seeing what's so special about Joan? Joan got Holmes in fighting condition again and helped him to recover from addiction AND the loss of "Irene". This must intrigue Moriarity both as a mastermind and as a former flame of Holmes.

It's just my theory mind you.
 
She's writing him from prison, she mentions being in jail in the letter
 
My favorite moments in this show are when we can see how much of a good influence Watson is on Holmes.

One last episode was when he asked her if he could accompany her to visit her old patient's grave. Holmes said it was obvious that the patient had a hand in making Watson the person that she is so Holmes wanted to show the man his appreciation.

Yes. It was played well too by JLM. Joan, as a friend, has carved a place into Holmes' heart. This ep had the part where Joan told him she thought it was sad that he had given up on romantic love. Is the theme this season the deepening of the Holmes/Watson friendship?
 
Questions about the season 1 finale;
1) How did Holmes take down Moriarty? What was the charge to send her to prison?
2) Did Watson find something wrong with Moriarty physically?

In the final hospital scene I couldn't hear a world Holmes or Moriarty were saying.

I've seen that question asked and hinted at that it will turn romantic. I don't think it should. Not because of some Moonlighting curse (Castle, Bones and a few other series have already successfully defied it) but it doesn't feel like it would be the right path for them.

Holmes and Watson should become very close but not romantically so. It feels like it would fall into every trope where a man and a woman can't avoid getting together and in their relationship I think it would do more harm than good.

Of course in a few years time I might change my opinion on it after things have developed more thoroughly between them but it's definitely something I'd roll my eyes at if it happened now.
