Eli Roth and Bruce Willis to reboot Death Wish

What kinda NRA **** is this?

I really don't think that is the point the film is trying to make. That can't be real.

It’s like the Purge if the Purge wasn’t self-aware enough.

I saw this and liked it. I was also extremely satisfied that
Kersey had showdowns with the men directly involved in the attack on his family. I was always irked that Bronson's original didn't have that.

I think a lot of the reviews focus way too much on the political side of things.

From a top review:
The biggest problem with Eli Roth's morally repugnant, pro-gun remake is that it's too much fun to ignore completely.

So the movie is a lot of fun... that's all I need to know.

Yeah, pretty much.

The backlash on this one always seemed sort of weird to me. It's Eli Roth doing Death Wish for god's sake. The guy's about as base & disgusting & no-redeeming-value as it gets, he's a director equivalent of a shock-jock.

And it's friggin' Death Wish. The Bronson ones were all pretty unacceptable & crass too - the original less so, was a better movie, but they're all pretty guilty of the same criticisms here.

If it's ridiculous, dumb, hyper-violent Roth stuff, whatever. I won't be seeing it as I hate his stuff, but if it's schlocky entertaining in the way his other work is, not really sure what the problem is. So this particular protagonist goes all vigilante with a gun - not sure that's any worse than all the torture in all his other stuff, it's all pretty awful.

He has to know he'll be torn to shreds over this though. I sort of suspect that's kind of the point, Eli just messing with people and trying to create some outrage for his own amusement.

Which, whatever. He wouldn't be the first.

The Death Wish sequels were all made by Cannon, who infamously made exploitative films. The original Death Wish is a very good movie.

Right, it is. But it's still the sort of thing that would attract a whole bunch of criticism/controversy if it came out now.

This is...that. Just with Eli Roth's crude extreme-everything "make the soccer moms cry" feel. Like...all of his other stuff, ever.

With today being a tough time where America is on the fence on reforming gun control, this was not a good time for this remake to be released at all.

It would’ve been more beneficial if Roth’s “Death Wish,” remake kept its original date of November of 2017 because um this one-note revenge action thriller that desperately wants to make a stance on gun control is not helping anyone right now. Just not now guys.

Eli Roth is pro gun control.

Yep.

Screw the naysayers this movie was WAY better than I expected. Yes, better than the original. It's smart and far less cheesy. Real character development and real emotion. STUNNED at how good this was...

8/10 all day long!

The criticism about the subject matter is just bs to me. So many folks just want to feel offended about anything.

What is next? John Wick 3 boycott or something. That film is going to be a bloodbath and guns galore. Hell, that scene of John picking out his guns in JW2 would get outcry right now. lol

But isn't that kind of the whole point of the original movie. It's a comment on vigilantism that it's not for justice but as a way of dealing with his own pain. This Death Wish comes off as just a white dad power fantasy.

Eli Roth is as liberal anti-gun as they come. I don't think he was trying to make some pro-gun message here. Then again, I have no interest in seeing this either.

Yeah. He's just out to shock and enrage, no political points being made here I'd imagine.

It'll sure as hell get taken that way by anyone who wants to see it that way though. Probably doesn't help having Willis in the lead, given he's seen as sort of quasi-Republican anyway.

my review

Trying to put poor timing aside... I thought this was a somewhat decent remake Joe Carnahan tries to put together with his script. I really liked how it was structured and the social commentary from the radio shows kinda work. However, Eli Roth "Eli Roths" it and he tries to dumb it down as much as possible and add extreme gore whenever he sees an opportunity. It's a weird clash of direction. The first act was all sorts of cheesy. I never bought Bruce Willis as a surgeon once. And the incident was really toned down compared to the original. That being said, I enjoyed it for what it was and I could only wish what this movie could have been if Joe Carnahan directed it.
7/10

Quasi? Willis is Republican and as far as I know always has been.

He's a conservative but he's not like "crazy conservative" if you get me.

They just made this look too clean and glossy from what I've seen

Really wish Carnahan got his hands on directing this. I also just wish he'd direct another movie in general. I don't think he has since Stretch

Yeah it's kinda annoying when that happens
I remember when The Watch came out around the Trayvon Martin tragedy a few people complained

When Let's Be Cops came out so many of the reviews basically said: "It's wrong to put out a movie with cops acting irresponsibly with all the police killings and corruptions" Acting like some cops having been doing messed up stuff for decades...

Right. Seems he's a little more traditional moderate Republican, little bit of a libertarian bent to go with it. But fairly centre on the social stuff, he's never come off as some Santorum crazy or whatever.

Just oldschool "dad Republican", still pretty much in the center.

They should have hired this Charles Bronson look-alike.
