Empire The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema!

Empire usually manages to embarass themselves with these types of lists.

Seven Samurai at #1 is fine with me. They lose me at #2. Amelie is a fine movie. It's not even close to the second best example of world cinema. Or even French cinema. Rules of the Game, The Grand Illusion, Breathless, The 400 Blows, and Playtime, among others, all have a better argument for that spot than Amelie.

Pan's Labyrinth, Spirited Away, Wages of Fear, and Let the Right One In are also much too high.

I suppose I should be glad that Empire didn't vote Godzilla (#31) into the Top 10. Sure, that's a better, more important film, than Breathless.

Actually, I take it back. It's just as much an embarrassment as Empire's other lists. Littered with anime, cult action, and cult horror. And Godzilla in the top half. And missing a slew of masterpieces.

I agree with Empire. Amelie is definitely better than Battleship Potemkin. And Pan's Labyrinth and City of God are obviously better than The Seventh Seal. :whatever:

I despise contemporary-leaning, commerciality-worshipping lists like this. Battleship Potemkin has lasted 85 years. Do you think we're still gonna be talking about Pan's Labyrinth in 85 years? Or Let The Right One In? Ridiculous.

Empire should either make an entirely commercial list (which serves its purpose, I guess) or an entirely serious list. This hybrid list just makes them look like they can't distinguish one from the other.

I suppose I shouldn't be too hard on Empire for actually wanting to spotlight foreign language films. But I'd have been embarassed to run that list. Even without considering rankings.

An incomplete listing of films that weren't listed by Empire, who were too busy filling the list with anime, cult films, and recent commercial movies.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
The Passion of Joan of Arc
White Hell of the Pitz Palu
Alexander Nevsky
Triumph of the Will
Boudu Saved from Drowning
Children of Paradise
La Terra Trema
Germany Year Zero
Umberto D.
La Strada
Nights in Cabiria
Amarcord
Senso
Les Diaboliques
Wild Strawberries
The Virgin Spring
Fanny and Alexander
The Leopard
Yojimbo
High and Low
Red Beard
Kagemusha
Black Orpheus
Shioot the Piano Player
Jules and Jim
Stolen Kisses
Day for Night
Contempt
Alphaville
Masculin/Feminin
Au Hasard Balthazar
Pickpocket
Le Trou
Le Cercle Rouge
Army of Shadows
Playtime
Claire's Knee
Chloe in the Afternoon

Stalker
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
Au Revoir les Enfants
Berlin Alexanderplatz
The Killer
Diva
Tampopo
Fitzcarraldo
Amores Perros
The Lives of Others
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Obviously there wasn't room for all of these in the Top 100. But, considering some of the movies that did make the list....

Was this voted for by readers though, or editorial choice?

Readers always choose what is recent and popular. i.e. Before Sunrise? Never heard of that. Amelie? Oh yeah!

Editors/contributors put the list together.

I have enough faith in mankind to think that maybe The Seven Samurai would sit atop a fan poll. (Perhaps a delusion on my part.) I have no faith that random fans would put Battleship Potemkin in the top 10.
