World Cup Of Cinema...

depends how you class a films origin, a lot of the cast and crew were french, as is the director, depends on your classification, the BFI class it as french.
Replace it with Betty Blue.

happy now? At some stage, I think it would be cool if people who nominated the films made their case for why it should win etc...

Fine.

The REAL definition of placing a film to a country relies on three elements whcih MUST be fufulled:

Filming location: Leon was filmed in the US
Director/Producers: The producers were American
Actors: With the exception of Jean Reno, (who's character is from Italy) most the actors were 'American'

Happy now? Play it safe and use Betty Blue.

The film itself, not the marketing or distribution.

It was filmed less than an hour away from me.

If an american buys a brittish artist paints and canvas, and the brittish artist paints a picture of london bridge, then the american sells it. What nationality is the painting?

Brittish!

Film = Directors medium
TV = Producers
Theatre = Actors

That is the worst example EVER!

The studio planned it from scratch (Walter Hills production, since he was going to direct, instead turned to producer), the script was done (by Americans) and then they chose a director who opted to use a British film crew since it was filmed in England (a financial decision by the producers) and post production was done in the US (since it was all filmed in a studio, no UK settings) and realised through American distributors who had conceived and produced the production.

And the mian characters(bar weaver) were british...

cartwright

holm

More brittish people worked on the film than americans. I'd call it a collaboration, as is regognised by both the bfi and the afi.

No British funding.

Moving on, some russian love at all people? Bit more south american cinema?

Where you been! lol.

We need two more countries, then quickly refine the list to make sure it's all good, then off we go!

I don't evne think Gojira is that good so I'm changing it to GMK! I don't care if it's not a classic, also 2 films to each country is kind of limiting, shouldn't it be 3?

limiting is the plan really, that way, 16 countries, gives 32 films, which gives us 8 groups of four, like the world cup... and a lot of people here may not know 3 films from the respective countries.

I've seend quite a few on this list my only complaint would be "Nuovo Cinema Paradiso" sure a lot of people have seen it and it's a real tear jerker but cinematically Once Upon a Time in the West blows it away :cmad: ANd even if you wanted to go that route might as well go with the original movie that inspired it Bicycle Theif, just my two cents... You should be diversifying instead of having two Italian Dramas...

fair point homie

Once Upon a Time in the West :cmad: I love Fellini but he served under Vittorio De Sica... That's way limited... Sergio Leone deserves his due especailly his impact on the Western genre and films in general, which is still felt to this day.

Want me to switch out bicycle thief for OUATITW?

Damn straight the opening alone deserves it... 8 1/2 is perfection, Bicycle Thief is also awesome but 8 1/2 builds off BT, so I'd take 8 1/2, and OUATITW is in a completely different ball-park thus diversifying the two titles.
