Mystery/Thriller Enola Holmes | Netflix

Haha, I don’t think there’s any movie where I outright hated Reeves and thought he was a bad actor.

I like Reeves a lot but even I have to say he was abysmal in Johnny Mnemonic, Dracula, Dangerous Liaisons and Little Buddha.

Yeah Reeves is not a “good” actor, but is so damn charming that it doesn’t matter. And he managed to pick some classics in his career, Bill & Ted, Point Break, Speed, The Matrix, John Wick. He knows to stay within his range.

Kinda surprised there’s so much criticism of Cavill. I thought folks around here were more-or-less fans. Regarding his brief snippets in the Enola Holmes trailer, Cavill seemed entirely serviceable to me — in a charming/supporting-role/essentially playing himself sort of way.

In terms of “miscasting,” I’m sort of a Sherlock Holmes purist. So basically, only Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett meet with my approval. :word: (And though it supported a decidedly non-canonical interpretation of the character, Nicol Williamson’s core portrayal was quite good.) That said, I’ve learned to live with and appreciate other, nontraditional versions of Holmes. E.g., Cumberbatch, RDJr. and even a dashing Roger Moore :wow: (in a surprisingly decent 1976 TV movie). So I’m not going to get too wound up that the Great Detective is now looking a bit like a modern-day heartthrob.

Keanu Reeves is wooden as a board to me. Cavill isn't Daniel Day-Lewis, but he's better than Reeves.

But he seems all kinds of miscast as Sherlock Holmes. Cavill says hunky action hero, he doesn't project that intellectual vibe that both RDJ and Benedict Cumberbatch can.

Agreed on Cavill here. Sherlock isn’t a physically imposing person.

For that matter, Holmes (according to Conan Doyle) was always neatly dressed and well groomed — except when in one of his numerous disguises). Indeed: even when camping out on the moor during The Hound of the Baskervilles

“He was thin and worn, but clear and alert, his keen face bronzed by the sun and roughened by the wind. In his tweed suit and cloth cap he looked like any other tourist upon the moor, and he had contrived, with that catlike love of personal cleanliness which was one of his characteristics, that his chin should be as smooth and his linen as perfect as if he were in Baker Street.”

Therefore, RDJr.’s slovenly version of Holmes is repudiated. :cwink: OTOH, if you can accommodate his interpretation, then “physically imposing” isn’t a big stretch. (As per canon, Holmes was over six foot and proficient in boxing, “baritsu” and fencing.)

Physicality has nothing to do with Holmes. It’s his eccentricity. He’s not suppose to be charming to people. From what we’ve seen of Cavill in that trailer, This seems like a Sherlock who’s much more generic. If he’s not running around, being extremely weird, he ain’t Sherlock.

IMO if he would be weird he would take attention away from the main character. by being normal he blends easier to the background as a background character. its true that this is not the Sherlock

Then eliminate him altogether from the story or cameo at the end. Or make Elona even weirder, she is a Holmes after all. So many more interesting directions.

I think Cavill is one of those actors like Keanu Reeves where we'll still be having the debate in 20 years over whether he's a good actor or not.
Damn. I wanna disagree but damn

I mean I like him, but I can't really point to one thing other than I guess The Tudors where I can go "See he's a good actor". MI6 is my favorite movie with him in it and he was probably the worst actor in it

In several good movies incarnation Holmes wasn't portrayed as eccentric or that weird, there are so many versions of the character on screen. (my fav incarnation was by Jeremy Brett).
The movie is about the sister anyway and Cavil will look nice, at least he is good at that.

Who plays it incredibly weird and eccentric.

I’m sorry but the best versions are more true to Conan Doyle’s books. An eccentric, weird, genius. You play him straight, then you take away anything interesting about the character. Watson’s the straight man.

Looking nice? Zzzzzzz.

But again, this is made for younger girls so I’m not the relevant audience.

And there's even if he's not hugely eccentric they could at least give him some personality. It's only a trailer, but Mycroft was at least shown to have some personality. Cavill looked indifferent.

This is correct. Of course, Holmes did have moments of eccentricity (especially at home with Watson or when searching for clues at a crime scene). And he could often be brusque or rude with certain individuals. But most of the time, he was a proper Victorian gentleman. The exaggerated weirdness isn’t canonical; and it typically derives from exaggerated portrayals (RDJr. is a conspicuous example).

This looks like it should be on "masterpiece mystery" before everyone got famous.

I watched the trailer. Yeah, this is right up my alley. I am sure plenty will hate it, but it's basically Nancy Drew period piece, with a modern flavor. I'm a Masterpiece theater kind of a person, so this just hits me right in the chest. I always love those kind of movies where I know all the major British actors in it, and it's kind of really fun to see Millie doing something where she gets to be really outgoing and confident. I am going to enjoy this.

Very much my impression as well. Of course, the central conceit of the movie (and the source YA novels) is that Sherlock and Mycroft had a younger sister. This is decidedly non-canonical. Though, to the readers of the original stories, the existence of Mycroft came as a surprise; and the possibility of additional siblings (never explicitly ruled out) has been employed within subsequent pastiches. For instance, Moffat and Gatiss invented an evil “Eurus Holmes.”

Granted, fiddling with the canon like this might be blasphemy to a hardcore Holmes purist. But among comic book types, I’d have thought there’d be a bit more latitude towards spinoff characters.

This is false, as there are many, many instances where Watson states Holmes’s oddness and coldness (not to mention his drug habit). Even how much more exaggerated he must’ve been to readers in the 19th century.

And the most memorable Holmes portrayals have been RDJ, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeremy Brett, hell even the mouse Basil of Bakerstreet all play up his eccentricities and coldness. Basil Rathbone, while not to their extreme, still had fun with oddball moments. He’s not Murdoch Mysteries.

Well, let’s be fair to Cavill here. His Sherlock might indeed be really dull but we only get little snippets of him in this trailer. They may have indeed downplayed some of his eccentricities to differentiate him from Mycroft (who appears uptight as ever) but if I were to guess, what it looks like they’re going for here is a brother-sister relationship between Sherlock and Enola that’s similar to Clark and Kara on the Supergirl TV series. This is obviously Enola’s show but they don’t want to rub fans of Sherlock the wrong way so they appear to be making him perhaps less of an oddball (and thus more likable than usual) and letting him be supportive of his sister. They’re free to make Mycroft more of an A-hole because no one really cares about him lol.

Sherlock is an oddity for his time period. He'd be positively tame by RDJ standards now.

I didn't get the vibe that Henry is dull from the trailer. He seems to be playing a bit of the romantic thinker with a sense of adventure, who sees a lot of himself in his little sister, while Mycroft is being a kill joy. I can get behind that.
