Episode 16 - "Unexpected" - Discussion Thread 2/19/07

But how is that a Lost reference? Being stranded on an island is not a new story. His quote sounds more like a reference to Weapon X; the 'specials' would just be hidden on an island rather than a Canadian stronghold.

C'mon, people, stop the denial. LOST is all the rage right now, Heroes is full of modern and old pop culture references, so it's no stretch AT ALL that Nathan is making a not to LOST.

"I'd round us all up, stick us in a lab on some island in the middle of the ocean."

How is that a Lost reference (I don't watch that craptacular show, so I have no idea)? Didn't the people on the island survive a plane crash? Or were they really put there for experimentation or something?

Or something.

why would they make a nod to Lost anyway?

Lost - ABC
Heroes - NBC

math don't add up

I can't tell if you're joking.

If you aren't, I'm really surprised so many people think mentioning an island means OMGLOSTWTF?!. It could just as easily ref Survivor or frickin' Gilligan. The ONLY connection to the show is that Nathan mentioned an island. Nothing about a plane crash. Nothing about surviving in unknown territory. Nothing about a group of very different people learning to live and work together. Lost has nothing to with lab experimentation and special people being sought out and segregated intentionally. That's a pretty weak ref. Dropping off the unwanted/dangerous on an island is not a new concept - and has nothing to do with survivors of a plane crash. If he said the supers should be dropped on an island for their own little Lord of the Rings, that would make more sense.

There are a lot of comic references, so I would think it's more likely a reference to something like Genosha. He said, ""...if people knew what we were capable of, they would drop a collective brick...because that's what I would do, I'd round us all up, stick us in a lab, on some island in the middle of the ocean." That's practically the definition of Genosha.

Seriously, can anyone explain how this qualifies as a Lost ref beyond "Nathan said 'island':cmad:"?

is there any particular reason why this has become an argument... it's just one line and subject to interpretation:huh:

I don't think it's argument  I've only asked for someone who watches Lost to back up the idea that it's a reference, which makes almost zero sense to me. I don't watch the show, so I've asked, a few times, if anyone can explain the "interpretation" of that line, but no one has yet. Does it really need interpretting? It's pretty straightforward, I think they're reading WAY too much into a totally benign, ambiguous line. You might as well claim Mr. Muggles is a nod to Harry Potter.

It's like looking for faces in clouds. Just because you see it, doesn't mean it's actually there. I think the Lost ref is a face in a cloud. You see what you want to see when it really isn't there.

not just talkin too you bub take a peak back at the thread...:whatever:

What's with the attitude, dude? I don't see anyone arguing. You're the only one being nasty. If you don't want to discuss if it was or wasn't a Lost reference, you're welcome to stay out of the conversation.

you completely misconstrued my attitude. I am honestly wondering why there is so much concern about the interpretation of one line on a show if they want to take it as a lost reference that shouldn't be such a big deal your not the first to question it thus my second comment I will personally ask Jeph the next time I see him to clear up any controversy Pax bro I'm questioning not attacking

How can he use that ability with the African guy there??

Being a sponge, he probably sucked the Haitian's powers to suck powers, thus nullifying the Haitian's powers of power-sucking by sucking the Haitian's powers.

That, or the Haitian is able to nullify only one power at the time.

That, or the Haitian's powers don't work with the Petrelli genes. Nathan was also able to fly with the Haitian right in front of him.

That, or we're looking at a plothole that's looking back at us.

1. I didn't realive he was a sponge, I thought he cut out the part of people's brains that enables super-powers, and adds it to himself.

2. Then why wouldn't the Haitian just absorb Syler's telekentic power of stopping bullets?

3. I think nathan was able to fly because the Haitian's power-nullifying ability only works on people with mental powers. Why would Syler have the Petrelli genes, anyway?

4. I think you're right!

Well, "The Office" is also an NBC show, and it's had 3 references to "Lost" so far.

Episode 2x15: "Boys and Girls"
Dwight said:
You remember on "LOST" when the met The Others?

Episode 3x05: "The Initiation"
Dwight said:
What is the Dharma Initiative?

Episode 3x13: "The Return"
Andy said:
Gonna go home, get my beer on, get my "LOST" on.

Ok, so maybe I took that a little far, but....yeah...:cwink:

When Nathan flew away from The Haitian and HRG, HRG said something to the effect of "He's further along than expected". I always took that as meaning that if someone has mastered their ability well enough, than not even The Haitian can nullify their power.

And if that's the case, I assume that's why Peter was still able to do the telekenisis deal with The Haitian there...Peter instinctively kicked ass with his power there, and it was too strong for The Haitian to override.

yeah, but The Office is a parody of the real world and working in the office
it makes sense for them to make deliberate references to pop culture

Heroes has no need for that

Geez man. Why you always gotta be pulling me back down to Earth as if I was some plane and you was some giant magnet? :csad:

Why NATHAN??
He's completely against super-powers. i hope he dies someyime during the season.

The Island on the Simpsons was in reference to "the Prisoner"

what's that for? there's a clear difference.
Not to me. (wait... that sounds racist doesn't it? SORRY!:o )

Regardless, it should be because the only name we know him by is "The Haitian"
Yeah, but I'm really bad with names.:o It took me till January before I could even remember that Mr. Bennet was Mr. Bennet. I just kept calling him "Dude-with-the-glasses-that-isn't-Japanese".

I don't think the Haitian was using his powers when he and Bennett confronted Peter.

I don't think he can just cancel powers in a second or less, otherwise, he would have stopped Nathan from flying or Sylar from using his TK to stop the bullets from killing him when Bennett shot at him.

Erm, I'm talking about NATHAN, my friend!
