Episode 14 - "Distractions" - Discussion Thread 2/5/07

Chronologically, it's pretty clear. I was saying it depends on what "family of heroes" means to you. :D
just saying that Peter and Nathan are a family and that they're older than Claire and Micha.

Peter and Nathan aren't a family... they are related, they are *in* a family, but if you tell me you're going to introduce me to your family and you introduce your brother (especially if you have a wife and kids) then I'm going to give you the new fist pound.

While DL, Nikki and Micah are not technically the first Hero family to exist, (and I'm sure the Peterellis, Meri and Claire aren't either), they still are the nuclear family with superpowers, and the closest Heroes is ever going to get to "The Incredibles."

That said, somethiing Hiro's sister said struck me... she said "You're insane." And it struck me a bit odd. Later that day it hit me like a ton of bricks. When we first met Hiro, he was concentrating on a clock attempting to bend the space time continuum. What kind of MADMAN sits and tries to bend the space-time continuum? There are millions of comics lovers, many frequent these boards, but we don't EVER even for a SECOND consider actually trying to do any of the things that occur in comics. He had no evidence he could do any such thing, and between that and his sister's oddly innocent one liner, those are our first clues to Hiro's insanity. Yes, he can still function, he can still be a hero, but the idea that someone who's never even heard of anyone with powers would actually try and bend the space time continuum... He's gotta be bonkers.

Still one of my favorites, but I'm as sure that Hiro can bend Spacetime as I am that Isaac can control fate.

Does Isasc control fate or just "see" it? I thought he just looked in but couldn't actually change things.

GL1 in that pilot episode Hiro confides in Ando that he turned back time the day prior or he paused time. He may have done it accidentally he never explained why he did it.

If anyone's crazy it would be Pete since he's been believing he can fly because of dreams, but it seems that the others like Claire and Hiro may have just found their talents by accident.

So far all of his paintings/predictions have transpired, none of them changed at all, but as with the painting showing Hiro fighting a dinosaur or the one with Peter dead, it's not what it seems at first glance.

That's a very interesting theory, GL1, but I think there are some glaring holes in it. Biggest two I can think of right away:

- How did he bring back a comic from the future, one that even accurately showed what was going to happen?

- Did Peter just imagine the subway train scene with Future Hiro?

Although what I do think is only in Hiro's head is that he has lost his powers. He's only lost his confidence, and has thus subconciously blocked them out.

Oh Hiro definitely has powers... he's also looney bonkers. And had he been sane he would have discovered them much later.

Hmmm... I must have forgotten about this. So it IS possible that Hiro actually did stumble upon his powers and that he's not looney bonkers, but even then, what it must take for someone to conclude that they can bend time and space seems like a large jump, even for someone who suspects they may be able to affect time.

I think the answer can be expressed in six words:

Hiro reads way too many comics.

And am I the only person here who's never seen if they could move something with their mind? Maybe I'm just a freak (probably am haha), but I can think of a couple times years back when, while nobody was around to ask what I was doing, I concentrated and tried to move something just by pointing at it. Now, I didn't go as deep as Hiro did by almost giving himself a hernia, but I thought "heck, why not try...just in case" :)

Who hasn't tried that?? When I was little, I was sure if I concentrated hard enough and just believed, I could walk over water. Thankfully, I could swim.

Wait a second. Think about how Hiro's powers work. He can travel back and forth through time. His own self traveled back in time.
Is it so impossible that Hiro somehow instinctively knew what he was capable of? Just like Neo who knew there was something wrong with the world but couldn't explain it. :) Maybe his mind just operates outside of the normal space time continuum.
:D

Space-time continuum... hmmmm... *reminisces about Star Trek*

It's so funny to me, but if HIRO had any fighting prowess at all, he could take out entire armies. His power is so beyond the scale of insane that I'm starting to believe GL1 that his flaw might be that it drives him nuts. Which would make for a pretty fantastic read.

Aynways. That's not what I wanted to bring up. I wanted to see what other people thought about the fact that these Superpeople just happen to be choosing other super people for Procreation. Why did DL just happen to get with nikki? Why did Nathan just happen to have this fling with claire's mom, and if that note on the good Doctors board is indeed about Zach, then why was claire instinctively drawn to him? Out of all of the geeky people at the school whom she could have controlled and kept quite about her ability, out of all of the people who could have had a video recorder, why why why someone potentially with powers?

There's something rotten in lindermvania folks. These people seek each other out for companionship, love, and for a future without even knowing it. Maybe it's as simple as the whole evolution thing that's been churning around since the first episode. Maybe the sleeks new models only want to mate with similar designs, but there's got to be more to it. This wierd instinct of supers to supers.

Remember when Nathan ****ed Jessica? He doesn't normally do those things. He usually spends his time trying to deny who he really is, and pretending to be normal, but when he's around another super person he looses himself and can't control little nathan.

50 bucks says Simone has powers too. She does and it's proof that super people are drawn to each other for lovin. I think so that linderman can get himself an amry of superbabies that he can raise to either be even more powerful than he is or to be a monarch of a new age of destruction that the great world powers could never contest with. when he comes for Micah, Claire, and Zach it'll be interesting.

Edit: I also wanted to point out that when I was little, I thought that by swinging my arms really fast I could make a Sonic boom like Guile.

Due to my work schedule I had to tape Monday's episode, and just now got a chance to watch it. HOLY ****! NATHAN IS THE DADDY!!! (Yes, I know it's been speculated on, but now it's confirmed.)
Just had to get that out of my system. Now I'll go read the past couple of days worth of posts :yay: .

I actually stood up and said "Awww, shiiii-iiiit!"

I'm so white.

Here's how Texas' licenses are designed:

That's not his signature in the top-right corner. I believe that's the Governor's signature.

Bennet's signature is under his thumb, and it only says "Bennet".

Lol they really AREN'T going to tell us his name! :-P

Maybe he only has one name (Y'know, like Logan).

holy **** clairs dad is nathan, wow that took me by surprise. but idk it seemed like peter had a strong brotherly connection with her, when he fist met her. i guess it was just a forshadowing.

more like Claire eye-****ed Peter when she first saw him. then he was talking to Claude about her and made it sound like he had a crush on her. just a tiny bit though.

Just enough that it's forgivable. Any more and it would be too creepy for them to have a normal uncle-niece relationship.

Nathan being Claire's dad made me eye-roll. :down
but i think i said that already.

Some thoughts on this episode:

Hey, no voice over by Mohinder! Is this the first time that's happened?

Ha! Sylar gets loose & leaves Bennett locked in the cage! (I hope they're going to explain how Sylar survived when that doctor (?) thought he was dead) I'm glad he didn't get to kill Mrs.Bennett, but also glad he got away--he's such a good villain.

Claude's "everybody is rotten" routine is going to get old real fast. But I did like--in a shocked sort of way--his throwing Peter off the building to try to get him to fly. And when Peter is losing control and Claude punches him out...:woot: .

Okay, I can accept Linderman getting some guy on Death Row to confess to the murders that Jessica committed, so that Nikki can be released. But what about her assault on the shrink? That's a crime, right? Couldn't they hold her for that?

When she's back home, how come Micah doesn't seem to know she's Jessica. I thought he could tell the difference between her and Nikki. And what about a follow-up to Micah's ATM robberies? Last episode he gave his dad a large amount of cash that he had stolen. I thought we'd be seeing D.L.'s reaction. Surely he had some sort of discussion with Micah about it.

For some reason I thought the Hiro & his dad storyline was going to run more than one episode. Oh well, it was nice to see George Takei, and maybe he'll have a guest appearance in another episode later on.

Maybe his name is Ben Net. :-P

I cracked up when they teased us with Mrs. Bennet's interrupted line about his name. My roommate couldn't understand why I thought it was so funny.

Y'know, Nathan really is the pimp of the show. Ms. Petrelli, Jessica/Nikki, AND Claire's mom. Damn.

BTW, anyone else thinkin that HRG's knew Nathan was Claire's real dad, and that's why he was chasing him in Vegas, and also for his power of flight?

It lasted enough to show how Hiro can smoothly solve a complicated family problem using his brains. It was a metaphor of his growing from a salaryman to a leader.

How many people noticed the license plate of Hiro's Fathers car as they went away...

NCC-1701

I had to back it up and watch it to make sure. I thought it was excellent!
