This is armchair BS from my end because I know nothing about the geopolitics of the Middle East or making war - but it seems like the best strategy for taking down ISIS would be for each of them - Obama, Putin, and whomever else is with us against them - to hit whatever areas the terrorist group likes to use as hidey holes. Except do it all at once. So you have Putin continuing his runs over Syria, while we take another country/region etc.
Terrorist ideology is self-fulfilling. If you intervene you are the invaders attacking Islam and if you stay out then it's Islam that must defend itself against the false Muslims so come here.
There's no actual end goal. Isis doesn't want a country/state. No country would develop trade relations with whatever NuSyria they made without Assad.Iran and Cuba didn't alienate the entire world with their American hate despite what bloody actions made their government.
