The Fall Xbox 360 dashboard update has been revealed to our colleagues at OXM from Microsoft and it's looking very good indeed with gaming classics and films on demand.

December 4 is the date you'll need to watch out for; that's the day you'll be able to download and play Halo. Yes, Halo as in the Xbox game, through Marketplace, on your Xbox 360.

Microsoft is introducing games it has published for the original Xbox on XBL Marketplace, with the eventual plan to bring as much of the back catalogue across as possible.

Games cost about 1200 Microsoft points (about ten quid), which according to us puts them a little over what you'd pay for them second hand.
The initial list of downloads includes Halo, Fable, Fahrenheit, Crimson Skies: High Road To Revenge, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex and Burnout 3. All good then, apart from maybe Crash.

And if that wasn't enough, films on demand, though not confirmed for the December 4 date, aren't far away. Studios such as Warner Bros are potentially lined up for the service, so we can look forward to films such as The Dark Knight, The Assassination of Jesse James and I Am Legend appearing eventually.

Films will cost less than a fiver and come in 720p resolution. You have 14 days to start watching a film once it has downloaded. Once you started watching a film, you have 24 hours to finish it. After that, the film deletes itself from your hard drive. It's basically an online rental service then, like the US Video Marketplace.

The CVG article has been removed for some reason.

Some of the contents of Microsoft's Fall Update for the 360 are now public knowledge, courtesy of the Official Xbox Mag. Highlight? The 360 gets its very own Virtual Console, with original Xbox games to be added to the Marketplace. The first available games include Halo, Fahrenheit, Fable, Crimson Skies (wonderful!), Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex and Burnout 3. Each of those will set you back 1200 Microsoft points (USD$15). Also confirmed for the update is that Europe will finally be getting the video marketplace. So! December 4's the day.

If they add Achievements to the Xbox games, I'm there!

...Even though I own the hardcopy. :(

Ugh, I hope this virtual console isn't replacing BC updates.

Most games are BC... though if I need to download "Otogi" to play it in High-Def... I'll do it.

I hope this is not the only thing in the update. Hopefully they will add at least Divx :o

Holy ****. Fable in HD with achievements!?!?!?!? Im friggen there!!!

I always wanted to play Fahrenheit.

The only thing I do not like is we have to buy these games again :csad: Lets just hope they update this alot better then they did with the Backwards Compatibility games & its going to take more then added achievements for me to want to buy these again.

I wasn´t expecting this, for MS to sell games from last generation on the 360.
It´s like the PS3 selling PS1 games (the PS3 best move so far), but one generation ahead.
I wasn´t expecting, but i like it.....i like it a hell of a lot :D

People will love this, and WTF is one of them...

Kotaku say that Psychonauts is one of the games to be released with the fall update.

In other news....

Carcossone is going to be free between 12:01 a.m. PST on Nov. 15 and 11:59 p.m. PST on Nov. 16.
And members of LIVE who've been faithful since 2002 will be gifted 500 points.
All this to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Xbox LIVE.

Fall Dash update coming next week (Dec. 4th.)

It was just confirmed that the Fall Dashboard update will be released next Tuesday, December 4th. One of the new features that will be part of the release is ‘Friends of Friends.’ With this new features, you’ll be able to browse the friends list of anyone on your Xbox LIVE friends list and send anyone on your friends list a friends request. We’re also adding a ‘Friends List’ setting in the Dashboard* and on Xbox.com to allow you to control who can see your friends list.

-Everyone (only available to members 18 and older)
-Friends only (available to members 13 and older)
-Blocked (available to all members, and automatic for anyone under the age of 13)

It’s important to mention that when the dashboard update is released, the new default setting will be Everyone (assuming you are of age). For those members that not want to share their friend list, we’ve added a page on Xbox.com that is available today where you can modify this setting as you see fit. If you want to keep your friends list private, you can sign into Xbox.com now at www.xbox.com/fof and change the setting to Blocked (if you so desire.) This gives you a full week to decide which setting you would like for this new feature.

If you want to fully embrace the new feature, you don’t need to thing except wait for the update next week.

[Read the press release on Xbox.com]

*This setting will appear in the dash next week with the update.

Edit: No this is not the only feature for the fall update. There are more, but this is all that is being released at this time (along with the previously announced Xbox Originals) I also clarified that you have to be over 18 to have this set to everyone when it launches next week.

Edit: Regarding those who have child accounts but who are now over 18..we are very aware of this and we are working on the technology to properly 'graduate' your account (the official term.) We'll have details on this very soon ;)

Also, you can change this setting as often as you’d like. It’s not a one time switch…not sure why people think that.

Xbox 360 Fall Update details spilled by MS Japan

Microsoft Japan recently held a small press briefing detailing some of the new features bundled into the Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard Update. With the help of Engadget Japanese's Ittousai we've been able to pinpoint a few relevant changes that are in store for next Tuesday's update. The most significant addition is the reorganization of the "games" blade (pictured above), which now features the "Game Library" (in place of "Xbox Live Arcade"), in addition to the old "Achievements" and "Played Games" sections.

When opened, the Game Library is nearly identical to the current XBLA menu, with a vertically-scrolling games list and an info box appearing for the highlighted game [Famitsu image]. New, however, is a horizontal sorting menu, broken down by filters like "All Games," "Arcade," "Demos," and "Recent Downloads." (This new horizontal and vertical organization is not unlike Sony's XMB design -- Microsoft calls it "twist" navigation, the same UI used for Zune.)

Additional Fall Update features:

* Top level of "marketplace" has been reorganized and reduced to four categories: "Recommended Content," "What's New," "Game Store," and "Video Store" (below top level, categories will be navigated by twist, just like the Game Library)
* "Personal Profile" added to Gamer Profile; text field allowing approx. 500-1000 characters, providing space to publish name, nationality, region, and self introduction. (Further social networking tools to accompany 'Friends of Friends' functionality)
* XBLA demos deleted from "Played Games" and Gamercard lists

Note: This feature set is by no means complete, and we should expect to see variations in and additions to the North American update, which will be made available on Dec. 4th.

When the hell is our DVR like service arriving???

Xbox Video Marketplace in Europe soon, limited release

A recently purchased Microsoft Points Card package (manufactured in Ireland) confirms the impending launch of Xbox Live Video Marketplace in Europe, apparently limited to the UK, Ireland, France, and Germany. The packaging also suggests that users will be able to rent "great movies" (in high-def), but does not mention the possible availability of television content.

Microsoft has loosely targeted a year-end release for Video Marketplace in parts of Europe (and Canada), and with this new evidence, we should expect Tuesday's Dashboard Update to include the service in all relevant territories.

Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard Update Walkthrough (Youtube)

Holy mackerel were those guys busy!

I can't even read through the whole list but it seems like they've thought of everything.

I particulary like the Xbox Originals and the XBLA Hits.

The first, because i can imagine this expanding in the near future to a virtual console type of service (i would love to see Dreamcast, Amiga and Saturn games on the 360).
Second, by lowering the prices, this might mean that we will see bigger and better games in the future of XBLA (there are great games, but some really crappy/amateurish ones too (Yaris and Screwjumper anyone?).

Shenmue 1 on the 360 would be... too good to be true.

I think they'll stick to just Xbox games for this generation. Xbox emulation alone seems to be taking all their efforts.

Microsoft has finally announced when its Video Marketplace will be hitting the UK, with British Xbox 360 owners able to download full length films from December 11. Coming off the back of a successful US launch, the marketplace will be the first video on-demand service available across six countries, with Canada, France and Germany - as well as the UK and Ireland - also getting the store.

Along with the date, Microsoft has released a list of films that will be available from launch, with highlights including Zodiac, Ocean's Eleven, Clash of the Titans and Three Kings. Robin Truchy, director of Xbox Live for Europe, said "We were already offering HD games, HD music videos and the option to enjoy HD-DVD format films, now we are offering HD movies to download and rent as well. This is very exciting for us and the consumer."

The download system will ape its US cousin, with downloaded content staying on your Xbox's hard drive for 14 days. Once a movie has been played users can access the film an unlimited number of times over a 24 hour period. As for pricing, expect to pay around 250 points (GBP 2.13, Euro 2.91) for a standard-definition film and 380 points (GBP 3.23, Euro 4.42) for their glossy HD counterparts. The full launch list, subject to change, is as follows:

Available in both standard and high definition:

300
Zodiac
Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone
The Matrix
The Matrix Revolutions
The Matrix Reloaded
Ocean's Eleven (2001)
The Perfect Storm
Swordfish
Three Kings
Training Day
The Fugitive
Risky Business
Space Cowboys
Eyes Wide Shut

Standard definition only:

Analyze This
Demolition Man
Eraser
Executive Decision
Lethal Weapon 3
Lethal Weapon 4
Looney Tunes: Back in Action
Mars Attacks!
Clash of The Titans
Superman III
Dead Calm
