Japanese Polled on Next Generation
Xbox 360, Wii, PS3 hot topics in Famitsu survey.
by Anoop Gantayat

May 25, 2006 - While we're sure IGN readers have been able to gauge the reactions of the English-speaking game communities for themselves, we've found ourselves being asked the same question over and over again: what do the Japanese think? And so we turn to Famitsu, whose latest issue contains the results of an E3-related survey held at Famitsu.com.

Famitsu.com polled its readers from 5/15 to 5/18 on four key questions related to all the big E3 announcements. The site used 294 responses to come to the following figures.

Responding to the question of which hardware has their greatest interest, 68.8% said Wii. PS3 grabbed 21.0%, ahead of Xbox 360's 7.2% and the DS's 3.0%. All hardware, current generation and next, was included in the survey.

A bit more directly, Famitsu asked survey takers which hardware they expect to win the next generation race. The Wii won this vote at 73.0%, with PS3 coming in second at 22.6% and Xbox 360 getting 4.4%.

Survey takers were also questioned on the PS3's price. In Japan, the base model costs 62,790 yen, a ways up from the PS2's original launch price of 37,800 yen, and sure enough, 88.4% of responders felt that this was too high. Only 10.9% felt that it was a reasonable price, while 0.7% punks said that it was too low.

While Nintendo didn't reveal the Wii's price at E3, Famitsu asked readers what they expect the system to cost. Survey takers selected the 25,000 yen price point to the tune of 53.6% of the vote. This isn't much of a surprise, as all Nintendo consoles including and following the Super Famicom, have been launched at that very price point. The next popular choice was 30,000 yen, with 35,000 and 20,000 yen coming in at third.

Finally, the survey asked readers to select the upcoming game that most interests them. Zelda Twilight Princess for the Wii took the top spot. Trailing behind it were Final Fantasy XIII (PS3), Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3), Smash Brothers X (Wii), Dragon Quest Sword (Wii), Super Mario Galaxy (Wii), Final Fantasy III (DS), Monster Hunter 3 (PS3), Resident Evil (Wii) and Halo 3 (Xbox 360).

Nintendo's Wii hardware seems to have been the big E3 winner, at least amongst readers of Famitsu.com. Now the big question is how this will translate into sales later this year.

It helps to look at the date of the articles you're posting, chump.

I definetly think that Nintendo will regain the second spot this generation with Sony barely winning the top spot.

I don't know about Sony winning this gen. Everyone I've talked to has said they couldn't afford the PS3 at the current pricepoints, which leaves a lot of doubt in my mind. I think a good portion of the folks who supported Sony this gen will switch over to either Microsoft and/or Nintendo. I'll probably buy the Wii this year, and the 360 around 2007/2008.

Wii will take Japan.
And will barely tie with the 360 everywhere else.

That Price will hurt Sony so bad that after it's first week Sony would have to be stupid idiot's not to have some kind of small Price Drop after the First Week. Otherwise Sony will be the next Sega

Yeah, but then they'd piss off their loyal fans who bought it at launch. If the price dips after the first week, everyone that bought it that week is going to be really pissed. If they drop it at all, it'd have to be before launch

Then that will just show how stupid & guillable for not waiting on such a High Priced System. Let them get pissed

Yeah, I'm sure Sony will want to piss off their most loyal fans.

They better hope they have enough loyal fans to buy their System at Launch. Otherwise it would be sad to see Thousands of PS3s at Stores Openng Week :o & lol just because most People are choosing not to buy the PS3 right away does not mean they are not "Loyal" Not being loyal means not buying the System at all ever

Yeah, because I'm sure not one person will buy the system at launch. And also, I said their MOST loyal fans... Meaning the ones that stuck with Sony through price, medicore launch, and apparantly stealing Nintendo's controller ideas...

In other words anyone that buys their System first week

Yes... Their MOST loyal fans... You see the word MOST?

& I think Loyal Fans = People that will no matter what buy the System eventually. It does not matter when they buy it. If you buy the System your pretty much a Fan. It does not matter when. Anyone that buys the System = Loyal Fan if you ask me

Come to think of it. Nintendo was number one for two generations. And then... maybe they became a little arrogant and thought they could do nothing wrong. And everyone knows what happened when they decided to stick with cartridges for N64 among other things. And now Sony has been number one for two generations and it feels like they adapted that kind of arrogant "we can do no wrong"-attitude with this ridiculous high price for PS3 among other things. They probably won't scare third party developers away in the same way that happened for Nintendo, but the appearance at E3 was lacklustre for PS3. I think it will have a tough fight against Xbox 360 in all countries except in Japan, where it seems almost impossible for Microsoft to succeed. Xbox 360 is cheaper and seems to have more interesting exclusive games coming up than Sony's console. It feels like Sony doesn't care much about the games and is hoping that the Blu-Ray player will sell the machine, just like the DVD-player sold PS2 when it was released.

As for Nintendo's chances to win this generation... I don't know. I don't really think so, but I think they definitely can close the gap to the others

Okay, fine... But what I'm saying is their most loyal fans.... meaning their biggest fans... meaning the ones that will buy it the day it comes out.... its not that hard of a concept to grasp.

Its not  its obviously a matter of one persons view point of what it means to be a "Loyal Fan"

you're really ******ed...(

Not a big suprise. PS3 is expensive, even in Japan where PS2 has a lot of support. 360 lacks Japanese support, which is vital to beat Nintendo and Sony.

It wasn't Nintendo arrogance that sunk the 64. Playstation came out over a year before N64, it's only competetion for a year was the Saturn, that cost $100 more, PS also had a lot of hot exclusive titles like MK3 and Doom. Also, it'd be interesting to see the numbers between SNES and Genesis, I'd be willing to bet they were neck and neck. Most people I knew had either both or just a Genesis.
