A 23-year-old model and fashion editor is lucky to be alive after she accidentally walked into a small plane's propeller on Saturday.

Lauren Scruggs, of Plano, Texas, was getting off a small private plane after looking at Christmas lights around the area when she walked into the moving propeller, Fox Dallas reports.

Scruggs' left hand was severed, and she suffered eye, shoulder and head injuries. She is now recovering at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, according to ABC News.

The fashion blogger of Lolo.com (and celebrity interviewer -- she interned on the set of "Gossip Girl") underwent several surgeries over the weekend. The extent of her brain injury is unknown at this time, a family spokesman told ABC News.

Lauren's parents spoke with "Good Morning America" on Tuesday. "Yesterday was a good day, there was a lot of really positive progress," Lauren's father Jeff told "GMA." "They took out her tube in the afternoon. She didn't speak right away ... I said Lauren will you say 'hi' to Daddy, and she goes, 'Hi.' Later she told one of Cheryl's sisters that she loves her. It's so encouraging to us. She's really uncomfortable as you can imagine."

It's unknown how Scruggs walked into the propeller, but her father thinks that she was going up to the cockpit to thank the pilot, saying, "She would have been grateful for him taking her up to see the Christmas lights around Dallas."

ABC News aviation consultant John Nance told the program that accidents like Scruggs' are "extremely rare." "It sounds like this is a combination of a bad procedure by the pilot and the passenger not properly realizing her proximity. One of the things I'd have to look at is why in the world a pilot permitted a passenger to board or deboard while a propeller was turning," Nance added

Guess you can say it--

*puts on glasses*

--was her number one fan.

Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh

Sounds pretty horrible. I hope she went unconscious and didn't feel it, i'd hate to be fully conscious if something horrific like that happened.

I keep thinking of that scene from Indian Jones. Pretty horrible, but how do you just walk into a propeller?

Seriously, how do you just walk in the direction of a plane's propellers???!! I mean the drone of the engine/s should be a MAJOR TIPOFF!! Anyway, I hope she makes a full recovery.

What a terrible accident, but I'm glad she's still alive. I hope she'll make a full recovery but it is obvious that her life will never be the same again.

It sounds like the opening to a bad joke. But there is nothing funny about it. I do wonder how this could happen as the article made a point that this kind of thing should never happen when protocols are followed.

When she recovers, it will be interesting to hear from her as to why she walked into it. Seemed like she distracted from the sounds of it.

"ooh, that propeller there's mighty dangerous. I better avoid OH BUTTERFLY OHADARGODAHODIKSOAJI!!"

A running propeller is hard to see during the day and impossible at night (when this happened). The pilot shouldn't have let her leave with the engine running.

EDIT...wrong news story....

Who lost their hands in a propeller accident recently??

How do you walk into a propeller? Imma walk into a Volcano! Imma walk into a cage full of horny grizzly bears. Imma walk into a quarantined and roped off live fire range with the sound of guns and explosions directly ahead of me.

Seriously???

I bet she was texting...I would put money on it.

Did they re-attach the hand? They only say it was severed, but not that she's lost is completely. E News really sucks at actually reporting real news.

Fasion Editor Walks into a Propeller.

Propeller says "Hands off!".

:o

She almost made the Darwin Awards.

Sorry, but the first thought thru my head was an image of Jamie and Adam testing movie myths involving people and propellers. Myth busted!

But you can hear them and feel the wind they produce.

Yeah... it's not that simple. Propellers are loud. When you're near one, that's all you hear. And depending on the conditions, there could be a lot of wind on the airfield not being produced by the plane.

It's simple if you have an IQ above mentally incapacitated or you don't care about your surroundings. I would guess both were at play.

I would guess she is a 23 year old beautiful girl with not a lot up stairs and she was texting or doing something with her phones that kids these days do.

I feel bad for her getting injured, but under the circumstances, I feel it is my duty as a citizen of the United Internet of the Earth to say "herp derp".

I'm, like, the only ****ing person in my school who is perfectly content to only use their phone for calls, and occasionally take pictures, without internet access.

I mean, in that case, why not make a ****ing Ipad able to do calls, too?
