So who are yours?
Feel free to include key roles that they starred in, why you appreciated them, and also how you think that they affected the landscape of film.
(The reason I created this thread was to hopefully inject some much needed discussion into the Hype. Most posters seem to neglect that in favor for one or two sentence posts. I like good debates: if you think a person's choices or one of them particularly, is overrated, then respond and try to include legitimate reasons why you feel that way.)
PLEASE REFRAIN FROM THE USE OF NAME-CALLING, TAUNTS, PETTY INSTIGATION in MY THREAD. THANKS
I have a pretty long list, but I'll just name a few and incorporate others later.
It's in no particular order:
Errol Flynn: He's in one of my favorite films of all time - The Adventures of Robin Hood.
I always liked the charisma that he brought to the role he was playing. For me personally, his best work is probably 'Objective, Burma.'
Jack Nicholson: Notice my avvy? I saw that film when I was 4 or 5 and I was hooked as a fan from then on; his devotion to his character is amazing.
When I saw his ad-lib in 'Hoffa' as he was addressing a legal commitee, it literally made me question whether or not he was the greatest actor of all time. It showed off his phenomal character study.
I think that the 2nd or 3rd film I saw him in was Chinatown. It's the classic sleuth tale, and it further impressed upon me how easily he slips in a role. He completely disappears.
Marlon Brando: My favorite film of his is 'On The Waterfront.' That role just seemed to fit him better than any other he ever played. He did a lot of manipulating w/ his lines and the tone of their delivery. I also liked what he did in 'Guys and Dolls.' I probably like those better than some of his more credited works like 'Godfather', 'North By Northwest,' and the obvious one: Superman.
Yul Brynner: I think that he has one of the best stage prescences I've ever seen. His 'swagger' is the impetus in a lot of his scenes, and it's solidified by the authoritative voice.
Paul Newman: I've read a lot of material on him and they all mention his great selectivity w/ characters, his status as a lone wolf (meaning that he didn't really befriend a lot of people in the business, but stayed w/ an independent mindset - it's probably one of the reasons why his marriage actually lasted down until this day), and he's seems to have a good sense of where multiple cameras are located when he's shooting.
Little side story: I saw an interview w/ Liev Schreiber on Conan; Schreiber said that when he met Newman for the first time, he was extremely nervous. Newman broke the ice in an unconventional way. The two actors were attending a benefit of some kind, and PN walked up to Schreiber and said, "How are you doing? I've seen you in the Manchurian Candidate. Good film. Btw, would you look at my wife's ***? After all this time, she's still got it doesn't she?"
Awesome.
I'll probably put more up later, but here are some others that I also enjoy.
Steve McQueen
Sydney Poitier
Vivien Leigh
Clint Eastwood
Gregory Peck
Michael Caine
Matt Damon
Clive Owen
Renee Zellweger
