Actors That You Are Done With

I was thinking if there was any actor who was doing so bad I could be "done" with him but then someone brought up Nick Cage.

Yeah, after movies like Ghost Rider and The Wicker Man I'm pretty much done with him.

see. i can never be done with certain actors because I can never neglect their great, past movies. That includes De Niro. I hate his movies now, but I will always love him for his work with Scorese.

Yeah, I'm over Cage too, but if he does another movie where he was actually good, I'll give the man props. I don't know if some of the people would do the same, sadly.

Johnny Depp
Viggo Mortensen (So is Hollywood, apparently)
Haley Joel Osment (lol)
Bruce Willis (still redeemable)

Kristen Dunst (ruins spider-man franchise and has snotty attitude)

Tyrese (belongs on tool academy)

Halle Berry (ruins x-men franchise and catwoman, didn't deserve oscar)

Zac Efron (trying to wedge into legitimate movies but ruins them be being in them)

Colin Farrel (Forced on the public by hollywood)

Hugh Grant (tired of his face)

Sarah Jessica Parker (same as above)

Sanaa Lathan (helped ruin AvP)

Mike Myers (did the Love Guru, what a sell out)

Tyler Perry (dresses up like old fat ladies)

Martin Lawrence (dresses up like old fat ladies)

Eddie Murphy (dresses up like old fat ladies)

Parker Posey (ruined her indie cred by staring in stinkers, Superman Returns and Blade Trinity)

The Rock (by doing nothing but disney crap)

Hilary Swank (annoying as hell)

Channing Tatum (stay away from GI Joe you cardboard hack)

Marlon Wayans (went too far with white chicks, way too far)

Tobey Maguire (sleepwalks through Spider-man role despite getting paid the gdp of a small country)

Johnny Depp...the man needs to go away for a couple years so I can appreciate him again, same goes for Will Smith.

Robin Williams. Don't get me wrong, I love Robin Williams. But he's a guy who needs to give crappy comedies and kids movies a rest for good and go back to more dramatic work because that is where he truly shines. One Hour Photo, Good Will Hunting... these are films where we saw how great he can truly be. He needs to skip doing comedy for a while until he finds a halfway decent script.

The reason why I'm not sick of Williams is because I won't watch 70% of his movies as they're obviously not something I would like.

I find amazing that the best dramatic role I've seen from R. Williams was in an episode of "Law & Order SVU" and not a big-budgeted blockbuster.

Angelina Jolie
Eddie Murphy

I don't know if I'd say I'm done with any actor, because I'd give anything a chance if it looked like I'd like it. But as far as relatively "giving up" goes, Eddie Murphy and John Travolta first come to mind. I don't really mind when actors take the checks and face the facts in their later careers, but these two have really hit it low. Robin Williams is getting down there too, but I'm still holding out hope for another Insomnia-caliber role.

Johnny Depp
Viggo Mortensen (So is Hollywood, apparently)
Haley Joel Osment (lol)
Bruce Willis (still redeemable)

I don't understand this comment? and how can you be 'over' him. He's been in a number of good movies since Lord of the Rings and he hasn't been overexposing himself either.

I love threads like these. People name, usually good actors, and give reasons like "Terrible in everything!" without elaborating. For example people who hate Maguire. Have you seen The Ice Storm, Wonder Boys, Ride with the Devil and/or Brothers? Have Knightley haters seen Pride & Prejudice and Atonement?

I mean Will Ferrell does play the same character a lot, but I doubt the doubters have seen Melinda/Melinda, The Producers and Stranger than Fiction. For the record, I hate the criticism that mainstream comedians "always play the same role." All comedians create or attempt to create a signature personality that audiences like and therefore audiences will pay to see that personality on the screen in funny situations. Yes, Ferrell always plays the same character. Adam Sandler always plays the same character. Ben Stiller always plays the same character. So does Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Jack Black, Steve Carrell, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Micahel Cera, Dan Akryod, Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Martin Short, Chris Farley, John Belllucci, Abbot and Costello, Groucho Marx, Bob Hope, Doris Day, Richard Pryor, Mel Brooks and The Three Stooges.

There are exceptions to this. Murray, Wilson and Stiller can do work like Wes Anderson films and Lost in Translation, Steve Martin can do Shopgirl...but let's be honest comedians all find their niche and use it. So one should say they do not like that comedian's style than the criticism "They always play the same character." For example, I hate the character Jim Carrey plays. I don't think he is funny, but annoying and overcompensating. While I can still say Carrey is a good actor when he stars in Man on the Moon or Eternal Sunshine and admit he is a good actor--I still hate his Ace Ventura/Mask/Dumb and Dumber/Liar Liar/Yes Man character.

As for the rest of the thread. Minus extreme examples (Paul Walker, Miley Cyrus, Madonna, etc.) I am always open to any actor if they look to reinvent themselves or find a good role in a good film.
Thank you!

This post needs to be stickied in the Misc. Films forum. I want to make love to this post and then frame it on my wall.

Bad Lieutenant?

Thank you. It's a perception, I think. Or education.

I think the problem with some people is that they think in in absolute. I knew a guy who thought De Niro was overrated. I asked him what movies has he seen De Niro in. The guy answered "Meet the Fockers" and that recent Al Pacino/De Niro cop movie. Then I slapped my head.

(I've got more stories about dumb people. Like what I was holding 'Freaks & Geeks' DVD in my hand at Best Buy, some dude was like 'Man, who watches that sheeet' and laughs off, as he was holding 'White Chicks')

I understand what you're saying Octoberist.
There are alot of people who deal in absolutes meaning that one movie can totally screw up the image they have of an actor or actress when thety themselves don´t even have a clue what good movies those actors have also done.
However i can see why some people you sorta feel cheated.

COmpare the work that Deniro and Pacino delivered in their prime ( the 70's-80's) with the stuff that they're doing now. I definately get the feeling with DeNiro that he's just doing it for the money . His recent movies just lack the stuff he had with movies like GodFather , like Raging Bull etc. Personally speaking DeNiro isn´t on my list of actors i´m done with but you can see where i´m going with this.

On the other hand i still am a fan of Meryl Streep. Even to this day she still gives excellent performances in movies. Why else would she get nominated almost every year for an oscar.

Any movie involving Tyler Perry.

Not that I watch them, they all just seem the same.
I only saw Madea Goes To Jail but it seemed more like two totally different movies spliced together that I didn't see the need for Madea to be in it.

Adam Sandler - Ery movie he does whether it be a comedy or dramsa he always finds a way to do his stupid 'Cajun Boy' voice from SNL.

Seth Rogen - maybe it's his annoying gravelly voice that gets to me.

Nicolas Cage - his last good movie was Face/Off but he always has that confused look to his face.

Eddie Murphy - Murphy needs to get back that magic he had in the 80's maybe the long rumored Beverly Hills Cop 4 can get him back on track.

Michael Cera - I don't think he'll ever go through puberty with his child-like voice.

Jonah Hill - he's only famous for being in the Judd Apatow films.

Tom Cruise - I like the guy but he's trying too hard doing these artsy fartsy WWII epics like Valkyrie that he needs a romantic comedy or another Mission Impossible to make me see his films.

Two actors that have really disappointed me during this decade were Harrison Ford and Robert De Niro. In the past, their names on a movie poster guaranteed a good movie or a good performance. Sadly, that's not the case anymore.

I think Seth Rogan and Michael Cera have a long road ahead of them. They'll do a movie eventually where the geek culture will embrace them.

I think Cera has 'Scott Pilgrim', so that covers that. Don't know about 'Green Hornet' but we'll see.

I think I agree with you.

The only movie Perry was decent in was his bit role in Abrams' Star Trek. But his own films are a different story altogether, it's essentially about down on their luck colored women overcoming their abusive husbands/boyfriends regurgitated over and over again. (And a few that claim to be Madea movies just has Madea in a couple of throwaway scenes.)

It's getting tired and repetitive. And every time he tries to branch out (like Daddy's Little Girls), he just drops the ball on them. It's a shame, he gets these talented actors and just fritters them away -- like Alfre Woodard, Taraji Henson, Derek Luke, Gabrielle Union and Idris Elba.

Adam Sandler - Ery movie he does whether it be a comedy or dramsa he always finds a way to do his stupid 'Cajun Boy' voice from SNL.

He needs to start doing drama films again. He was always good doing drama.

Seth Rogen - maybe it's his annoying gravelly voice that gets to me.

I don't understand why everyone always hates on Seth Rogen. Sure he's done the same role, but at least he's trying to branch out; and he still gets hate for that. He even lost a ton of weight for his roles.

Nicolas Cage - his last good movie was Face/Off but he always has that confused look to his face.

He needs to stop doing action films because Ghost Rider and Bangkok Dangerous were awful. He's best in drama films.

Michael Cera - I don't think he'll ever go through puberty with his child-like voice.

I have no problem with him but he is one of the most annoyingly typecasted actor.

Jonah Hill - he's only famous for being in the Judd Apatow films.

Jonah Hill's still pretty funny. So what if he's only under one director for most of his films, it doesnt take away the fact that when he's pissed off in films it's comedic gold.

Tom Cruise - I like the guy but he's trying too hard doing these artsy fartsy WWII epics like Valkyrie that he needs a romantic comedy or another Mission Impossible to make me see his films.

Yeah or play another villain role like he did in Collateral.

Kristen Dunst (ruins spider-man franchise and has snotty attitude)

Agreed.

Tyrese (belongs on tool academy)

He's not that bad an actor, though he constantly gets supporting roles.

Halle Berry (ruins x-men franchise and catwoman, didn't deserve oscar)

Agreed, but she did deserve the Oscar.

Zac Efron (trying to wedge into legitimate movies but ruins them by being in them)

He has a long career ahead of him so I think he could prove he's a good actor.

Colin Farrel (Forced on the public by hollywood)

Only the films he does in Britain are good

Hugh Grant (tired of his face)

[See Michael Cera]

Sarah Jessica Parker (same as above)

I hate her face. She's incredibly ugly.

Sanaa Lathan (helped ruin AvP)

Strongly disagree. Love Sanna Lathan. She still has a career.

Mike Myers (did the Love Guru, what a sell out)

I miss Austin Powers and Wayne's World.

Tyler Perry (dresses up like old fat ladies)

That and his movies are just not funny. I don't dislike the guy, though. His cameo in Star Trek was cool.

Martin Lawrence (dresses up like old fat ladies)

And does crappy kids films. Still not as bad as Eddie Murphy though.

Eddie Murphy (dresses up like old fat ladies)

The worst offender. Other than Shrek all his films have been stinkers so stick a fork in his career.

The Rock (by doing nothing but disney crap)

I wish he would be in a film with a good director instead of being in action or kids films with a terrible director or writing because I've seens he does have acting talent.

Hilary Swank (annoying as hell)

Depends on her role. Million Baby was great. Amelia not so much.

Channing Tatum (stay away from GI Joe you cardboard hack)

This guy has no acting skills. He obviously gets by on his looks and body.

Marlon Wayans (went too far with white chicks, way too far)

Though White Chicks was bad, I kinda liked it. Little Man on the other hand.......

Tobey Maguire (sleepwalks through Spider-man role despite getting paid the gdp of a small country)

Agreed.

And another actor that I'm tired of seeing is definitely Dane Cook. He's never been funny.

Halle Berry (ruins x-men franchise and catwoman, didn't deserve oscar)

Colin Farrel (Forced on the public by hollywood)

Sanaa Lathan (helped ruin AvP)

Tyler Perry (dresses up like old fat ladies)

Parker Posey (ruined her indie cred by staring in stinkers, Superman Returns and Blade Trinity)

The Rock (by doing nothing but disney crap)

Halle Berry - did you actually see the movie she won an Oscar for? If you had I suspect you wouldn't have made that comment. She was very talented and had a good resume before she ventured into comicbook territory.

Colin Farrell - I suggest watchign In Bruges. Some of his best work.

Sanaa Lathan - another actress who has done movies outside of AvP. Have you seen any of them? If anything she did AvP the favor by being one of it's few bright spots.

Tylar Perry - proving that you missed the points of the majority of his films. It could be that they speak to me culturally since it's nice to see black actors playing something other than gangsters and criminals. I get why that would go unnoticed by some.

Parker Posey - I don't see how starring in a couple of mainstream flims(one of which was very good just not as exciting) strips her of all indie cred. She's still a very good actress.

The Rock - I admit I have a soft spot for the guy.
