Favorite James Bond?

Craig has two extremely disappointing entries but for me they're nowhere near as abysmal as some other Bond actors' films.

Yeah, QoS and Spectre were disappointing but I wouldn’t call either of them bad. They’re masterpieces compared to Brosnan’s films other than Goldeneye and better than some of the Moore films when they got into goofy slapstick territory, IMO.

The main thing for me that puts Spectre very close to the bottom is that not only was it not good, it was like 2 ½ hours long and boring. Yeah it's a better made film than some of the schlockier old ones but I'd get more enjoyment out of watching something like Moonraker even though it's really silly. Even Die Another Day I can enjoy in a 'so bad it's good' way. I actually think that one starts off good - pre-credits sequence is good and I like the bit with Bond getting tortured and the strained relationship between him and M. But then somewhere around Cuba it goes off the rails and it keeps flying further and further away when it adds elements like changing your face and race, escaping a space laser by windsurfing or the invisible car.

I don’t even try to apply continuity logic to NSNA, I just look at it as another adaptation of Thunderball. One that happens to be less faithful to the novel than the 60s version.

You mentioned Elseworld Bond so I tried to apply that to the unofficial NSNA.
Maybe my explanation didn't make sense?

I'm going to disagree with that. I have them near the bottom. QoS especially is in the running for worst in the entire series.

2) Daniel Craig ( 2006-2021)

I watched Dr No for the first time. I can see why Connery is a favorite and is considered the best Bond.

The first hour was great and I appreciated the slower pace and Bond actually being more of a detective.

But when he got the island, it got a bit boring. I was surprised Ursula Andrews was basically useless. I’m so used to Bond girls to having a more active role but she was definitely there just for eye candy and nothing more.

I watched Dr No for the first time. I can see why Connery is a favorite and is considered the best Bond.

Is that the very first Connery Bond that you've seen? I really, really recommend his next one, From Russia with Love, if only for the fight on the train with Robert Shaw's Red Grant

Yes it is. Never been a die hard fan of the series. Saw a few Moore and Dalton ones in my youth, though I barely remember them. I’ve seen most of the Brosnan ones (Goldeneye obviously being the best) and of course all the Craig ones.

I chose Daniel Craig. Connery is timeless and will always be James Bond to me.

However, when I watched Casino Royale the first time in theaters, I was completely blown away from the movie and Craig's performance. I am a diehard 007 fan and Craig immediately became my favorite Bond and CR my favorite Bond movie.

From Russia With Love is really the absolute pick of the Connery films and probably the one film from the pre-Brosnan era I’d show to someone to get them interested in the franchise. I think it’s one of the best films ever made and I’m glad Ian Fleming got to see it in his lifetime.

Dr No’s a bit of a weird one because it’s a good movie, but it suffers from being the first film out of the gate. Some things weren’t quite solidified yet, and it probably would have been better had been made later on and the cinematic language evolved a bit to where they could better capture the pulp surrealism of the novel. But it’s a very charming movie all things considered.

It is a little hard to explain my reasoning, but Dr. No feels like a 50s movie. The action, the sets, the way the film was shot, etc. FRWL seems like it came out a decade later, rather than the next year. It is far more modern. Just compare the fight with Grant to the "fight" with No, for a good example. DN is the only movie in the series like this.

In hindsight, Bond fighting a squid would not have been the most fitting way for Craig to go out.

I got to think of the snake in Moonraker now.

Having a giant squid in an upcoming Bond film can be one way to include the more fantastical elements in the franchise again.
I would like to change that to an octopus instead. It's a more common threat in old sea-based tales.
But what size? As long as the creature is not too big, it has to be believable in one sense. No way they're going all greek mythology, Kraken-esque with 007 LOL
It should be big enough to kill a man, no more.
Hmm, the octopus in Altman's Popeye had a perfect size, right?

Should Bond encounter the creature by surprise when he's in an ordinary diving suit, he's in real danger and has to use all of his skills to escape?
Or is it better if he's inside some kind of underwater vehicle when a big octopus comes from nowhere and attacks him, and it just so "happens" that Q has added the right weapons for this possible scenario? If the latter is the case, I can imagine that 007 has brought the Bond girl with him, and he'll deliever at least one quip in relation to the fight. Most likely afterwards.
Gosh, I would love to see this kind of lighter Bond again.
