I was personally quite inpressed with 'Right at your door' which managed to be far superior to the likes of the usual concept films like Open Water and Blair Witch. However my favourite I can think of now is 'Dark Passage' where the half of the film is done from a first person perspective.

Anyone got any other fav concept films?

Batman Begins.

I'm guessing it means a film that has some sort of gimmick or quirk (for lack of a better word)?

One example would be Surveillance (I think it might have changed titles), an upcoming film shot entirely on surveillance cameras. Another is Timecode, a movie with 4 angles always onscreen.

Eh?

Weird that you mention Dark Passage because I am watching that now.

It may be good to define what you mean by concept film, because a 'high concept' film is a film that basically equates to the modern day blockbuster, large scale and dealing with broad themes and usually has universal appeal because of a simple plot.

OKies, a concept film is a film that entirely centres around one point, purpose or technique, that goes somewaht against the norm of filmmaking in terms of locations, filming technique etc, like Blair withc, Open water, Right at your door, dark passage, etc, also you could describe them as having some sort of quirk. I think i've explained it, not very well mind you, but that should help?

So would expressionist films count?

Not really, as they're more like pioneering than subversive, even though caligari is one of the best films ever...

So does Memento count?

Okay. I will reuminate on this subject and see if I can think of some films that fit the category. I shall return.

good, look forward to your input:)

I like memento, but It's not one of my fav's by any means:(

I'll definitely agree with Memento, and if Four Rooms counts, I'm throwing that in

I have to admit, the movie does lose some of it's interest upon second viewing because you know the deal.

Apart form the narrative structure, the film isn't that impressive really, Insomnia is a superior film.

Memento and Russian Ark are two of my favs.

Okay, I'm gonna give my serious answer...

Following.

Besides being the introduction to Christopher Nolan's famed narrative structure stylings, I simply love films that can take the bare minimum of, well, nearly anything, and with a good script, and good direction, turn it a movie - and a good one to boot. That simplicity is really beautiful to me, and really shows what good directing and writing is about.

Pi
Irreversible, which ups the ante put by Memento, but manages to still cause similar effects on you each time you watch it
Coffee & Cigarrettes
Dogville
Eraserhead

I wouldn't class Pi as necessarily a concept film, it's more of a contemporary Noir, as there are no overiding filmic techniques in terms of camera etc, apart from noiristic filmaking. But what an AWESOME film though! LOVE IT!
