February 2012 Fan Art Contest

Manips should be allowed but come on, that is just a filter on top of an official image. One, maybe two, clicks of a mouse in photoshop.

at least he submitted something and he messaged me about it prior. are you planning on submitting something?

No. Am I not allowed to comment on the entries if I dont enter myself?

you're allowed to comment sure, but it seems like more people are being too picky and complaining about entries than submitting something

this is supposed to be fun

I agree. I just think people who enter should put a little more effort than just using filters. Sorry

I hope next months contest is more complex. I always enjoy when there is a twist or theme to these, instead of just: Spider-Man...GO!, Superman....GO!

Like Marvel 2099 or DC Hero/Villain swap, etc. Just my 2 cents

There was a lot more to what I did than just click a mouse. As I said the background pic is one I took myself, and I cut out the spiderman picture. What I did had a few dozen steps to get the final image.

I think this will be the last time I enter something in this contest. Too much apples to oranges going on.

Original artwork vs swiped art from pros or photoshopped filtered pics.

I'm not knocking ya for doing it, but I don't want to put my 6-10 hours of original work up against it.

Why not enter? If you have faith in your work and are proud of what you did post it. I like what I did a lot. It was fun to turn a photo into line-art. If you have seen my other manips you know that I do a nice job on them ( check out my man of steel poster ). If you don't think a photoshoped picture is art then there are a ton of people making money at it with advertizements you need to talk to.

its more or less life size and hes hanging on the ceiling 5 meters high watching over us:-) hope that 1 photo is enough...

In the future I have a suggestion If i may get real clothing material - (Like Blue Cloth - Red cluth build up your paper mache mold underneath apply the cloth over it and the glue stuff and things you did over the cloth - maybe like aluminum foil for the eyes or a mirror like surface material - and it should look really cool - you can get clothing materialk very similar to that used in the movie at the W stores

To make the webbing you use thick black glue - I think that's what you did anyways right?

Oh doh I mean chicken mesh good idea how to do it[/QUOTE]
actually i did not want to use cloth it should have become one piece entirely.... and i used cables for the webbing took me alot of time to cut and bend em:-).... i think i start a ''making of'' thread, i photographed almost every step :woot:

I don't mind what people enter, as long as their upfront about what it is.

But personally I found what you said...

Something new that I was playing around with. I would have colored it but I kind of like the b/w look.

...made me think that you'd actually drawn it. And I was impressed.

So reading the rest of the entries, I kind of feel duped.

Well I actually drew the Cosmic spiderman using only photoshop and rough guesstimates of old cosmic spiderman images I sometimes do a overlay which in case of Galactus was to actually improve the original art piece - but it is my art THE CS is not based on any existing image except older spidermans costumes in an all new pose - a little goofy i know but original art

If it was a photomanip of pieces/photos you had taken, so be it. But if you (or anyone) is using another artist's work in your piece, that doesn't sit right with me.

Perhaps I'm mistaken though. Is that Spider-man your drawing? Or did someone else do it?

I'm confused.

Spider-man is also a photo from the first Spider-man movie. As i said the original piece I did was a photomanip that would have been a poster or the front page of the Daily Bugle. I wasn't quite happy with either one so I played around with it and used a new technique I learned and transformed it into line art. I then wanted to color it as well but was not happy with that either. So i added some more layers to give it a more of a charcoal look to it. It was a blast to make.

BTW I love your art. keep it up. You should try sending in some submissions to marvel and DC.

Well here goes nothing. A Spiderman painting I did for my son. 16x20 canvas done with acrylics.

I'm pretty sure it's only one but could be wrong please msg comicChick to make sure

Uncle Belvis thank you for entering, but you must pick one and please edit out the other thank you.

As for those who are participating. These are supposed to be fun, why aren't yall letting it be? the rules are in the first post every thread, and they're slightly vague because art is subjective and i'm not trying to be an art-nazi and have a 100 rules for a contest that is just for fun.

we never had this much arguments in the olden days and we're only in the second month of this go round. If you use a reference or use art from something pre-existing, cite your reference.

if you have a problem with someone's art, come to me privately, via pm. if i haven't said anything about it, then assume that it's either permissible or that the user contacted me prior for permission, which has happened. there are lots of different forms of art and i'm pleased to see so many thinking outside the box already.

please continue to submit art if you haven't already as there is still a week and a half left in this competition

Well said comicChick,
I was thinking of entering but after reading all the nit-picking going on in here had second thought's, why can't the guys treat it like the good old days .lol

back in the old days it was kinda standard practice to keep the contest thread fairly complementary, and to post constructive criticism in people's personal threads...

it would be stupid to make a rule about this, but just something to think about... ... ... (did i just invite a lot of criticism?) ;)

That can also get to be a real problem as it already did in the past - Criticism is fine - going overboard on criticism is not cool
