AUGUST 1981: The 20th Anniversary

If you were an FF reader at the time, chances are you have a fond memory of this one:

And since it's been weeks since I posted Byrne's first four covers, here they are again...

"A very promising, if understated, start to arguably the second most important run in the series' history." -
from Steven Haslemere's review of FF #232 (Byrne's first as writer/artist) found at FFPLAZA.COM:

Byrne, a revelation of creativity. Hmm... wonder what he is doing these days?

Well, I don't have a cool double autograph like Malus has of Stan and Jack but several years ago I was able to pick this up at a local book store that sells both new and consignment items.

ArtofJackKirby.jpg

Inside the book is a separate sheet with Jack Kirby's autograph that is transparent enough to see the portrait on the next page. It's number 539 of 1000 signed copies.

I've always wanted that Kirby book.
And Highguard, that pdf excerpt from the Joe Sinnott book is something else!
There's some rare FF art when you get to about page 44, including the unused cover to FF #64.

^^Well the chapter read very well. Sinnott was always my favorite FF and Thor inker.

Mine too. In my opinion his inks gave the FF and the Thing particularly a very consistent look for decades. There were many times where an inker just gave rough sketch and sinnott did almost all of the work.

Sorry I haven't been around to add any posts lately, but my work load has been crazy of late.

IM, I do remeber those Third Eye posters you mentioned a while ago. i have the Puzzle version that does not pop up often. I'll post a pic this weekend.
John

Thanks...I look forward to seeing your posts, Grog. Was that your hobby room (for want of a better word) you posted a while back? It was spectacular. Like a mini museum!

As for Joe Sinnott, that's a very good point about consistency. He gave the FF its' "look" for a long time.

Thanks! Thats my hobby room. I have a small section for vintage Star Wars, but everything else is FF. When the movie came out it got in the local paper, a magazine cover, and a radio show too. They bribed me with some advance screening tickets....
Heres the radio link..nothing to spectacular, but it was fun.

Thanks for that link (I'll have to wait til I get home to check it out)

And here's a reminder for everyone.... I picked up my Marvel Stamps from the Post Office today!

Dude I remember you in the paper! I didn't know that was you (not like I post that much but it's cool seeing that you go here). I live in Chesapeake so I got the Virginian Pilot issue with you in it and I remember seeing you on the magazine cover while driving. Sorry if I'm being too friendly but it's cool seeing that you go here.

YodaMan, always nice to meet someone in the area. I don't post here that often either, but I always look in for some good movie info.

Where do you buy your books? I shop at Zeno's in Chesapeake. Wayne's a good friend of mine.

Yodaman and Grog, as Agent would say, what is in a name?

They sound cool.

Hey guys,

At comic con right now. On a friends computer. I've got some cool news to share when I get back. Talk later.

Well, here's what I've heard on the floor...I'm sure this has already been reported somewhere......but there's big buzz about a green light on a Silver Surfer movie. Everyone's saying it's a done deal. Has this news already gotten out?

^^ Well there has been a lot of talk about that and yeah Marvel had announced that SS had moved to the fore of discussions.

Well I want to hear about FF3, I like SS but not as a substitute for FF3.

I doubt it will be (a substitute for FF3). We're probably hearing all about Silver Surfer right now because FF2 just came out and are probably giving Story and co. a rest before they discuss FF3.

FF#237: Byrne makes the best of a frustrating company decision when marvel sells the tops of their covers to advertisers for two months straight. :whatever:
This had happened before, the year before Byrne came on board. Apparently the reader outcry wasn't bad enough to deter them from doing it again:

FF237.jpg

FF#238: In a fairly ballsy homage to Stan & Jack, Byrne puts himself on this light-hearted cover. The inside was not so light-hearted, as we learned the secret of Frankie Raye and Reed's latest effort to cure Ben had tragic consequences. I'll try to get some excerpts up from this one. It was fun:

I thought I would add the latest little goodies I have been picking up through my local comic book shop. These are made in the UK and have been coming out there for a while. We finally got them here in the States, possibly because of the lead content of the figures. One of my online buddies known as the Cyber Coyote at the FF board I mod was the one brought these to my attention. The retail at around 13.99 here.

To show the scale, here they are next to some of my Marvel Masterworks...
