That really is the most interesting thing I have heard all day. As mundane as that might sound to some that was a refreshing attempt at an old fascination of mine and puts a bright stamp on my day. I have a rehearsal with 23 adult musicians now to go through a piece of mine. Let's see if it is as refreshing as that post was to me. (Adults can be many times harder to deal with than kids....don't fool yourself) Thanks Highguard.

The original Human Torch had no control over his flame when created. According to his creator, he spontaneously burst into flame on contact with oxygen.

Curiously enough, he gained control over his flame when exposed to Nitrogen gas (go figure). Why? Don't know. These early comics didn't even TRY to come up with a plausible explanation.

When the title was revived briefly in 1953 or 54, the Torch was exposed to an atomic blast, which "super activated" his flame. This is where he gained the ability to increase his temperature.

Its also interesting to note that the depiction of the original Torch in the FF mag above is completely different from the way he is shown in the original HT title. After the first few appearances, he was being drawn almost exactly like Kirby drew Johnny Storm - red with yellow flame and thin black lines runnig through the body.

Alex Schomberg did a lot of incredible covers featuring the Torch, Namor and Cap during the war years. Do a Google image search on Marvel Mystery Comics and you'll see some amzing art!

Yeah that is true. They both are drawn the same by several artists. They did a retcon a few years back involving the vision who had been thought to be the original human torch by Byrne. that was a great story by the way. The original torch was resurected at that time. Can't recall what happened to him right now.

Sorry, after my first kid was born, you needed a crowbar to get him out of my arms and even formula manufaturers have a little line in their ads saying that breast feeding is best.

^^ Actually that is how Stan liked to portray women in relation to their men at the time. It was particularly noticeable in the inhumans, dragaon man saga Malus showcased.

It is curious as to why their bickering was so pronounced. Reed was almost dismissive of sue at the time and she seemed to take it. Made me wonder about Stan's home fires at the time.

No self respecting woman would take that kind of guff today.

So let me rephrase what I said above in modern couture.

The Countdown is ending...

So, where are all the cool people gonna hang out after the movie gets here?

There's no question this board will continue to be very active for several months after the movie's release; even up to DVD release time. But the title of this thread alone makes it a dinosaur after Friday: "Countdown to June 15th." I mean there's no getting around that.

So I was thinking of creating a new thread, and would welcome your suggestions.

Currently what I have in mind is an "FF memorabilia" themed thread.
There's an unbelievable amount of unusual and rare FF products and collectibles out there: Coloring books, jigsaw puzzles, action figures, 7-11 cups, magazine covers, Big-Little books, foreign language editions, etc etc -

There's been lots of stuff produced over the years tied to both the comics and the movies. But a lot of these items have had very limited distribution and will rarely be seen by most fans.

Take this Fantastic Four Index, for example:

Published in 1977 by G & T Enterprises of Toronto, it contains complete credits for FF 1-180, 11 FF Annuals and the 1968-1970 Silver Surfer series.
I bought it back in '77 when I was 13 years old - and I used it most every day while putting together the Cover Countdown thread.

And stuff like this packet of Viewmaster discs from the mid-70's:

So-How many would be like to move the party to another thread after this weekend?
Any title suggestions?

I still have my circa 1970 Fantastic Four pajamas (believe it or not) folded in the same box with all of my comics, I have those glass 7-11 glasses, the big little book, some old Marvel calendars, FF coloring books (my daughter was just reading the one last weekend where the witch turns into a buzzard - strange story for the FF), puzzles, etc!

Kind of an extended Kirby collector.

That would be cool..... Grog's stuff is amazing. I don't have that much other than the comics. I never saw that much Marvel product in my area, other than when Secret Wars came out. I could put up pictures of my Bowen collection. I have about 25 of those, including Doctor Doom, Galactus (bust only), Super Skrull and the FF busts.

Ah, that was my Holy Grail (or since it is Doom's origin, maybe I should say Unholy Grail) of comics for a while. For some reason, the local drug store where we got comics seldom stocked the annuals and there were no such thing as comic book specialty shops. I finally found a copy in one of the first such stores in my area and I thought 5 bucks was a lot of money to spend for a back issue comic book back then !! I wish I would have bought more of the guy's stuff before he went out of business.
