To paraphrase a certain orange-hued, scaly-skinned mutant, "It's button-mashin' time!" It's not exactly brain surgery blasting through waves of comic-book thugs in this adaption of the latest Fantastic Four flick, but the game packs the same visceral thrills as a good summer blockbuster. It's not lonely work, either: Up to four can play at once, with the computer controlling any unmanned characters.
Take advantage of the special skills of Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and Thing to get through levels unharmed. Teamwork counts, as using multiple characters together can unleash combo moves that deliver big damage to enemies. Pulling off these tricks can be fun, but it's too easy to fall back on repeating the most effective moves.
If all this seems as familiar as Mr. Fantastic's spandex undershorts, that's because apart from the movie-inspired characters and story line, Fantastic Four is not much different from superhero games like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and X-Men Legends, both four-player arcade-style brawlers that just about anyone can pick up and play. Fantastic Four lacks the nonlinear story lines and freedom to roam that make the recent Spider-Man 3 game so great. For what it's worth, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is the Summer's second-best comic-to-movies-to-game translation.
