Film's with the best marketing campaign's past and present?

Love this thread! I'm an Advertising/PR major so I love talking about this kind of stuff.

In most recent memory I'd have to say that Cloverfield, The Dark Knight, and Paranormal Activity all had some awesome campaigns!

In my lifetime, I'd have to say The Phantom Menace had the best marketing campaign ever. Not even including the film itself being hyped due to 17 years of anticipation and being a prequel to arguably the greatest and most influential trilogy of all-time, it had a joint campaign with Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and KFC. Also, Pepsi had that huge deal with the movie as well since Star Wars characters were all over Pepsi, Mountain Dew, all other Pepsi product cans. Also, we can't forget about the toys in the stores and the loads of TV spots. I can definitely say that I don't think there will ever be a marketing campaign better than this ever again.

The campaign for Batman '89 was very memorable for me at least, you couldn't walk anywhere whether it was school, the mall, the streets without seeing the Batman iconic poster plastered.

For Terminator 2 I remember The Naked Gun 2 was coming out and there was a TV promo with Leslie Nielsen decked out as the T2 quoting lines from the movie.

I wish I was around for Bat Mania.

Just so you know.. at the time.. Pepsi owned Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut... so the advertising in all four places isn't so far fetched.

I was born the year BR came out. But it's not the same. At least BTAS came out that year as well.

Damn I feel old and I'm not even that old really.

I still remember seeing BR in the theatre with my buddies.

Ohh, I see. It makes sense now. Still though, it's been over 10 years and we haven't seen anything like that since.

I was the perfect age (nearly 7) when BTAS came out. I feel bad for the kids today. Cartoons have gone down the drain.

Everybody who is not a kid has this mentality. Kids today will grow up saying this.

That's why the internet is mad about '80s cartoons even though most of them were crap.

BTAS is one of the best cartoons ever regardless of whether I was a kid or not when it came out. Same goes for the mid-90's Spider-Man and X-Men cartoons.

I was a big fan of the Ninja Turtles cartoon as a kid but I haven't bothered watching any of it in a long, long time. I saw one of the films on TV recently and it's terrible. And I'm not afraid at all to admit it.

BTAS still is awesome and I'm 26 years old now lol.

I would say that of course TDK had one of the best recent ones. But I remember B89 I had so many Batman things on me at all times, it was everywhere. I remember T2's hype as well, it was additionally everywhere and I still have a lot of the toys from it. Jurassic Park had a lot as well, I remember I had a lot of toys/video games from that time period. And The Phantom Menace was huge too, that was probably one of the biggest campaigns, in terms of merchandising it was everywhere. I still have all the Pop cans of each character from Ep I.

Oh no, I wasn't saying BTAS was bad. It's a legitimately great cartoon.

I'm just saying, "kids today watch crap" isn't necessarily true.

I'm really enjoying how Disney's promoting Tron Legacy. elecTRONica looked like a poopton of fun.

That's because a good number of 80s cartoons were crap. And even though the 90s had it's share of bad cartoons, it had way better cartoons than most of today's cartoons.

I turned 4 just 6 weeks or so after the release of Batman in 1989, and even I remember the marketing for that movie. That's how insanely huge it was. After that, I'd say The Phantom Menace. You younger guys just don't know how truly big some of those campaigns were. Spider-Man 3, Iron Man, Tron, TDK are all being mentioned, but those are so heavily geared to the people who are going to line up for them anyway. Those campaigns don't remotely come close to impacting the mainstream the same way before the internet era. Totally small potatoes now.

Yes, the 90s was a Golden Age of quality cartoons. The 00s weren't too bad though.

The Early Aughts weren't bad, but more recently? ...yeah.

The Expendables.

Out of the blue one day a movie starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and Jet Li was announced and then the cast just kept growing and growing and growing even to the point where the movie was being cast after it had started filming and every couple of weeks we'd get an announcement that that some tough guy has joined the cast and after they completed filming they where still casting.

i was only 4 years old in 1989, but i clearly remember that everywhere you went there was Batman. what a fun time

Well it kind of is because lately there has been a whole Disney Channel fad going on....but I see your point. There are still some great cartoons like Avatar the last airbender and The Spectacular Spider-man (<--- which was sadly canceled :csad: )

Also what a great idea to shamelessly play it off like Bruce and Arnie had more than a cameo. They should of done that for Terminator Salvation and that might of helped it's numbers.
