So, apprently, I have a half-brother. I knew that my mother was married to someone other than my father before I was born, and that's where I got my super-boring last name. She didn't mention them much, and I just sort of assumed that the kids had been from her exes' previous marriage (I've never met them - and yes, there's a girl, too, so I must have a half-sister as well). Wrong.

I talked to my mom this morning, and she told me that he had been trying to find our side of the family, and had managed to contact a cousin thinking that she was me. So, I tried looking him up on facebook, but it's not easy when our last name is Smith and both our names are very common and the male and female versions of each other. All I know about him is that he's gay, lives somewhere in British Columbia, and is approximately 30 years old.

Do any of you know what kind of ruote I should take on the internet to find him? I mean, I don't really care. I've lived long enough without family in my life to really care about one more person, but it might be interesting.

Any suggestions?

with a last name like smith, it could be hard, but what about those genealogy, family tree websites like ancestry.com ?

But you don't live in Canada.

I would say to give it a short, hear what he has to say. He tried to find you,so there may be something there.

I'd pass. Just another person to keep up with.

I'm so negative. :csad:

Why not ask the cousin that he contacted, thinking she was you, for info on how to get in touch with him?

In a darker tone, family usually get together at funerals...

otherwise, you might want to fork out for a private detective for about a week if it means that much to you. or you could just ask your cousin if she kept his details?

On a slightly diferent note.
There are way too many of those freaky stories of half-siblings who meet up late in life and become attracted to each other.

You probably married your brother. :o

Haha. When I first started dating my husband, my mom demanded to know his mother's maiden name and all the family names related to them. :o We're clear.

Maybe he was adopted too. :o
