I've always thought what made go 'meh' on Disney's John Carter was the lack of Frank Frezetta imagery. Of course, it could never be as exotic (or naked) but still. Frank's art depicted something masculine, pulpy and surreal. I liked that. But when Andrew Stanton declared Frezetta's art as outdated, my heart was kinda broken.

Still, the irony in this is that Frank Frazetta's paintings influenced the concept of He-Man a great deal.
