Iron Man First review of Iron Man

That wasn't a bad review -- simple.

It didn't sound like he loved the film, though.

just as my fears are suspected... they didn't get the basic story and script right which is a downright damn shame

this is genuine stuff as well, I'm not surprised Favreau stuck with the whole campy FF style comedy slapstick approach..... god dammit and just as I was waiting for some kick ass reviews

I've often found that if a critic didn't like it, I'll love it. I wasn't expecting a Oscar caliber movie from a superhero film. The guy didn't hate the movie, so that is good.
I'm not letting any reviews sway me from seeing the movie, I've read the novel and it will be kick @$$.

doesn't peter david always make things much better??

It´s not a raving review, but it´s positive enough. Any comparisons to Fantastic Four scare me to death, but it´s good to know RDJ helps to elevate the material.

I always take early reviews with a grain of salt. Anyone posting this early that has seen it usually has an agenda of some sort. Don't jump to conclusions and don't give any early review that much weight.

First of all, who is this guy? He obviously knows nothing about Tony Stark in the comics, calling him a raging alcholoic and a mess, what are we back in the 80s again?

Second, at least he said it's not a bad film, better than Fantastic Four and more action than Superman Returns.

I'm not trying to bash anything or anyone here, nor am I trying to crash a party, but it isn't hard to have more action than Superman Returns. :o

I thought it was a positive review. He said at the start This is not a bad movie.

I think he jumping ahead wanting Stark to be an alcoholic at this point in the movies. That won't happen till the sequel.

LOL, I was thinking the same when I typed that.

But from what the review is saying and the novel, there will be plenty of action.

Here's another blog review I found that is absolutely glowing. Again, positive or negative, don't give any early review that much weight. Agendas (pro or con) usually show up early to try and influence buzz. Also, these guys want to make a name for themselves. So, they could've got info from the novel or gotten word second hand and ran with it. I'm not posting a link because why encourage more of this stuff?

Marvel needed to get in to the solo movie making business long ago. Instead of leasing out their characters to other studios, they’re making movies themselves. Everyone knows Iron Man is their first effort and what a great lead off film! This movie really takes the comic book genre to the highest level. It reinvents epic adventure and “Marvelizes” summer characters in all the right ways. Spider-Man and the X-Men did this to a degree but only as far as their respective studios wished to stay true to the source material. Anything added or amended was for the benefit of the live action adaptation. Director Sam Raimi pulled this off by talking to the summer crowd, not down to them with the Spider-Man series. Jon Favreau has done the same thing here but I think he’s done it even better. Raimi intentionally threw in a little cheese. Favreau adds nice bits of humor but grounds it in a good enough reality. I’ve said it before but it’s brave to reach for the highest common denominator with a big budget film and Favreau delivers a movie with as much feeling as it has action and intensity. It’s a movie that has a wonderful balance that delivers intelligence, heart and fun with the perfect pace. This is, without a doubt going to be one of my top 10 movies of 2008, quite possibly the number one film.

The in-your-face action is paced by the plot and characters that keep you interested from start to amazing finish. What absolutely blew me away were the phenomenal special effects. I know they built a practical, working armor. What I loved is the use of CGI was used to augment the real life armor and not create something from scratch. Most all CGI constructs feel fake somehow but the stuff in Iron Man didn’t seem fake even for an instant. As great as everything looked, what really drives the movie is the emotional resonance and down to earth nature of the plot. Sure the concept is wild but it’s all presented so that you really believe it could happen. I doubt anyone will find fault with this movie unless they went in trying to dislike it.

Delivers intelligence, heart and fun with the perfect pace? We'll all find out in 23 days.

The thing about reviews, it's usually based on that person's taste and expectations, as much as they try te be objective, they can't, they have a idea going in of what they want and expect to see, and if it doesn't deliver than they will say so, based on there likes and dislikes.
You'll find many people who go see the movie that get's a negative review, come out say it was one of there top 5 films of all time, or vice versa, so, it's up to the movie goier and what they want to see.

So Monger only comes in at the end of the movie for that final fight. Can't say that I'm surprised or anything but still that kinda sucks IMO...

To be honest I don't expect this movie to get X2, SM2, BB type reviews.

Somewhere between 55-70%.

This movie is going to be a summer crowd pleaser movie with good comedy, tons of awesome action and sfx with some intense moments.

The trailers have always given that vibe.

I would go as far as to day that the story will be its weakest point just like transformers.

I am sure that if a capable director had made f4 films then those would have been much much better than they turned out to be because on paper I am sure the action and sfx sounded great. On paper Iorn man might have sounded great too and they got a director who can do action and comedy so that is what iron man will do right. Also Robert is a much actor then all the f4 combined so there you go.

Marvel has not entered in this business to make BB type films. Their goal is to make big crowd pleaser summer movie. And I am totally fine with that.

"he eventually gives into being the destructive Iron Monger (with about ten minutes of screen time)"

so...only ten minutes of Iron Monger?
dang...this sucks bad

Why? There's plenty of other action in the movie.

I still think this movie will be really enjoyable but I kind of always thought they should have saved Iron Monger for the sequel. I wanted only one man to be suiting up in iron for this first movie. Save everyone else suiting up for the sequels.

There's really nothng to this review that you cannot glean from watching the trailers.

We know the story is basic and fairly predictable. We know what's going to happen. We know what kind of persona Stark has. We know the approach IRON MAN has taken, a pseudo comedic action adventure. What, did you expect some magically deep movie to appear in it's place? It's going to be a fun, relatively intelligent action movie. And if they get it right enough, that could be enough.

I agree with this post.

Add to that, the lack of mention of anything "deep" or thought provoking in this review would tend to point to there not being much of that element to the movie.

I think that's certainly leaping to conclusions when dealing with exactly 1 review.

Like most people, I don't let reviews influence me. Hell, I usually disagree with them- people can rant to me all they please about the many virutes of Batman Begins but they're simply not going to change the fact that I flat out enjoyed it less than X2 or Spidey 2 or whatever.

^I agree. I rate both of those movies higher as well.

The first review sounds neither raving nor bashing, so it if has an agenda, it´s hard to guess it. The second one is glowing but pretty vague, doesn´t get into enough story detaiis.
