THR SEPTEMBER 22, 2017:
Is 'Flash Gordon' Too Similar to 'Guardians of the Galaxy' to Return to Movies Now?
Graeme McMillan said:
With Kingsman: The Golden Circle in theaters, director Matthew Vaughn can turn his attention to other projects on his plate — including the reboot of cult newspaper strip Flash Gordon that he was in talks to direct back in 2015.

Little has been heard about the 20th Century Fox feature recently, and Vaughn — who's reportedly shown up on shortlists for Warner's The Flash and Man of Steel 2 in the last few months — has suggested that one reason might be the difficulty in making Alex Raymond's comic strip stand out in today's crowded genre field.

"For me, the only problem with Flash Gordon is Guardians [of the Galaxy] kind of stole what I would have liked to have done with it," Vaughn told Collider. "You've got Star Wars, you've got Guardians, so you've got to have your own space opera, but you have to find something that can survive among these two very, very great franchises."

Conceptually, there's certainly crossover between Flash and Guardians' Star-Lord; both are dumb jocks from Earth who have good hearts and even better luck when it comes to getting involved with intergalactic business. Whether or not Vaughn hoped to transform Flash's unreliable scientist friend Dr. Zarkov into a talking raccoon remains unclear, of course.

In theory, a Flash Gordon movie could be a middle ground between Marvel's space-set series and Star Wars, as the classic Flash mythology also includes intergalactic war, a charismatic central villain and countless alien planets to explore. However, as Vaughn suggests, a middle ground isn't necessarily the easiest place to build a franchise that needs to distinguish itself from established competition.

Nonetheless, he confirmed that he was still working on the idea, although he shied away from confirming any timeline for the project. "The way I choose films is when I know I have to make it. Simple as that," he said. "There will be a moment where I can't think of anything else other than getting behind a camera and shooting a movie. It's a very hard switch to click; once it's on, nothing stops me."

Double redundancy in doing another Flash Gordon when they're also adapting Starlight.

Not going to lie, I'm geeky enough to have speculated about ways to update the property and contrast it with its successors:

1. Mongo, the Planet of Remnants. Flash Gordon was never really an intergalactic travel story, and Mongo is notable for having dozens of different subspecies and cheesy character types. I say you embrace that, but maybe make it a little bit creepier: make Mongo a war machine that annihilates whole planets, but only after ripping a chunk of its victims and integrating it and its people into itself. It's a Frankenstein's Monster of planets with different ecosystems and people who are constantly mutating to survive on Mongo's changing surface. So the Hawkman, the merpeople, the forest dwellers, etc., they're all the few survivors of their original planet and have to fight over keeping their segment of the world from being absorbed and transformed by others. If they cooperated as one people, they could keep their heads above the water (or flaming magma and machinery), but Ming is feeding their feuds and disputes to keep them under his thumb.

2. Embrace the mismatched weaponry. Star Wars and Guardians both feature blaster heavy weaponry, using pseudo-modern tactics and fighting styles with suppressive fire and a general favoritism towards distance fighting (save the one or two exceptions.) I think you could do better embracing a more Early Rennaissance warfare style: low firing rate on the ranged weaponry, and a heavier and more general focus on melee combat with spears, swords, and axes. Have "flintlock" laser pistols, solar sailing spaceships, etc.

3. Avoid characterization overlap with Guardians and Star Wars. Flash is supposed to be a jock, but that doesn't mean he should be an arrogant jerk. If he's a football player, maybe emohasize that he knows a team system is needed for success, so that's why he's so focused and flexible in forming an alliance. Dale Arden could be a hilariously cool headed and non-chalant reporter, or an ambitious Poli-Sci major. And keep the Professor as a bit of a mad man.

It'll probably end up with Liam Hemsworth as Flash.:oldrazz:

I don't think that's such a bad idea.

I guess the trick is not to make it too John Carter esque (as in, great effects but a bit cardboard cutouty and boring)

Just make it really fabulous. Guardians of the galaxy is nice but not camp enough

I think Guardians was campy...but maybe not on the level of say Batman '66. A new Flash Gordon could go more campy but risks being an all out comedy. Anyway, my nomination for the new Flash.....

John Carter was far too po faced though. It's sci fi/fantasy. Have a bit of a sense of humour about it.

Get tove Lo to make music for it
