It was an interesting take on the buddy cop movie, but there is a lot of room to improve upon the original. It will definitely need some solid star power in it to make it work though.

I enjoyed the movie and the series was even better. It was a crime for it to be cancelled after just one season. But at least we got some closure with the TV movie specials.

I will be watching how this develops with interest...

Benedict Cumberbatch as Sam Francisco (or the equivalent character) obviously. For the Sykes role, I am thinking Kyle Chandler.

Not bad... I could see Cumby as more a villainous alien, but I think he should play more roles that have whimsy and humor in them so Sam would fit that. For Sykes though, lets be honest... Scott Caan is the way to go. :)

:funny: You know, Scott Caan wouldn't be a bad choice if they wanted a more bro-like detective (I was thinking Kyle as more of a grizzled Hill Street Blues type of guy). The relevancy of the casting might be lost to the audience though, as Alien Nation was hardly one of James Caan's most well-known roles.

There is no way Cumberbatch will ever do this movie.

I hope they make the aliens look cool. The ones in the original looked like the Coneheads only without the cones.

He was in that B-grade film Into Darkness. The original Alien Nation had James Caan and Mandy Patinkin. Make this into this generation's Bladerunner and you've got a lot of interest.

It wasn't my personal suggestion, and at this point it's FUN for PR and others to think about potential castings and mix and match leads.

Alien Natin sits in a weird place in pop culture. People know what it is, but rarely do people talk about it (vs. something like Highlander)

I never got into this concept.

I mean, I get it, but what it is when you boil it all down is In The Heat Of The Night with aliens. Like someone said, a good couple of actors playing the parts is certainly needed to dust off this one. Unless they have something else in mind with the plot.

I think that "Sci Fi In the Heat of the Night" is a great way to sell the idea to a studio and even the wider audience.

I have a crazy idea for casting... John Cho as Sykes and Kal Penn as Sam. They already have chemistry, and before I get the complaint I know is coming, I will point out that duos in film used to be a common thing, across genres and not just comedy. The two already have a natural rapport and it would be a different type of film than the H&K films, seeing as this would be a drama/sci fi film. Plus the culture clash stuff demands some comedy and they can for sure do that. Cho and Penn have good dramatic chops as well. Of course this is just spitballing.

Yes, a sci-fi In the Heat was how it was viewed originally, and most panned it because the filmmakers didn't really do anything with it other than that. There's got to be something more than an alien/human team up. Doing this as a comedy feels like where its headed.

I myself always loved the original. It had life as a VHS release, which was the reason FOX made the show. I don't think a new film has to be a comedy per se, but the culture clash stuff will have comedic elements, which even the original did, such as Sam eating raw beaver, ect.

This could be relevant with immigration and religion if done right.

Well I'd certainly be interested to see what they would do with it differently. I wouldn't mind a comedy. Cast is everything in this film.

The film and the show was definitely in the best tradition of Sci Fi being a good lens to exploring sociological issues under the cloak of something else.

I enjoy this show I barley remember watching it much but I was just kid when it came out I remember their was an race of aliens and then the human race some of the human didn't like the alien race. I don't remember it much it been long time since I seen it.

I'm in the tv show was better than the film camp. The film was just to dreary for me.

I remember this, what was it that they could be killed with? Salt water or something right?

Newcomers = Mexicans (or any other illegal immigrant for that matter)

There wasn't even subtext, it was just text!

I barely remember the movie and the show, all that comes to mind is the condom scene where Sykes is explaining how a condom works and Sam says "it fits?, then Sykes says it stretches and proceeds to stretch it out about 12 inches and Sam says "and still, it fits?"

I remember the movies and series and it holds a lot of potential for being both a great sociological explortation or just good action/adventure weirdness.
