Florida mandates students must learn evolution

From the article:

"Orange County-based television evangelist John Butler Book took a harder line, saying he would support that standard only if creationism also were taught.

"Evolution is an educated guess," Book said. "It cannot be demonstrated. That we came from an ape is absolutely ridiculous.""

I hope the idiot televangelist isn't part of the decision committee since he needs some of the valuable education that they're trying to implement. Evolution is much, much more than an educated guess, it has been seen, and it doesn't state that we came from apes. It's idiots like this that tout the very ignorance that the state is trying to correct.

as opposed to how easily one demonstrates that a magic man in the sky created the universe in 6 days and then rested because he was tired.
I wonder if he watched TV while resting.
wait.

there were no shows around :csad:

I guess he went jogging.

MODS: Feel free to edit, if you feel this is too offensive. :o I found it quite funny.

I was watching this National Geographic special last night about the lost pyramid-building civilization of the Lambayeque, near Peru. They sacrificed literally thousands of human lives to appease ther Gods. What sort of "compassionate" god is this Bible God, when he creates people, then leaves them with no guidance for millenia, killing each other? Do these people then go to "hell", when what they did is for the sake of their worship?

Face it. Christianity and Islam are just the latest crazes in the insanity that is Human Religion.

Seriously...the fact that he proved that he doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to evolution, and the fact that he's trying to dismiss it as ridiculous speak volumes.

I always had a problem with how X-Men portrayed the process of evolution...the mutants weren't actually, "evolved forms." They were still Homo sapiens by the biological definition of a species.

They weren't Homo sapiens, in the movies the scientific species of mutants was called Homo superior.

Other than Magneto calling them Homo Superior, I didn't realize X-Men tried to portray mutants as something other than Homo Sapien. I don't really read the X-Men comics (although they are on my list of runs to buy up) but that's what was said in the movies.
Homo Superior is their actual biological designation in the comics. In Marvel, they are, by definition another species that evolved from humanity. Now whether or not they are biologically accurate...well, I guess that doesn't really matter considering humans can't control metal or read minds in the first place.

You know, approving the fact that a school wants to teach evolution is fine, but what the hell is up with the religion-bashing?

carrnutt, you guys say that that evolution is more than "apes turning into man", then you should respect the fact that christianity is more than "zombie makes people eat his flesh".

Oh, so the mutants can't reproduce with Homo sapiens and produce reproductively viable offspring?

Thanks for clearing that up.

Well actually, he's right. A man coming from an ape is ridiculous.....

They can, but they are a distinct species. They can also shoot lasers from their eyes. It's a comic book. Get over it.

I studied it all but don't really remember. I'm only going by what I recall on X-Men because I remember that more than I do biology class.:csad:
If Marvel ever has one of the mutants mate with a Homo sapien, and that offspring can in-turn reproduct, then they'll have completely contradicted themselves.

If they're truly separate species, they could not produce reproductively viable offspring.

So Marvel's definition of a biological species is different from that of the scientific community. I'm cool with that. So long as it's understood.

Marvel doesn't obey the laws of physics. Why should they have to obey the laws of biology.

It makes me edgy when people speak of evolution and use the X-Men as an example...I'm just making sure the distinction is understood, mang.

Oh, well, okay then. Yeah it's understood. Falls under that whole 'suspension of belief' thing that comes from reading comics.

...looks like a monkey to me.
That picture doesn't accurately portray the process of evolution. I'd explain it to you, but it'd take more time than I'm willing to put forth. I'd also have to use lots of big words and technical jargan to save time, and we all know how well you handle that.

Well while your at it you should probably tour the hundreds of museums that have this same diagram and explain to patrons that the diagrams are not totally accurate.

Btw way to add an insult to the debate
